Paul Newman and his Butch Cassidy director, George Roy Hill, made a very original comedy in this 1977 story of an over-the-hill player/coach (Newman) for a lousy hockey team who gets results when he teaches his players to get dirty. One of the most hilariously profane movies ever to come out of Hollywood, this is the kind of film that makes its own rules as it goes along. Newman is very good, and while Hill goes for the gusto in terms of capturing the violence of this world, his instinct for comedy has never been sharper. Great support from Strother Martin, Paul Dooley, and the rest. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

  • Murphy's Law [1986]Murphy's Law | DVD | (03/05/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Murphy's Law is a thoroughly unpleasant 1986 thriller stars Charles Bronson as a cop systematically framed for one murder after another. The killings, though, turn out to be the work of a female nutcase (Carrie Snodgress) he had once sent away to prison. Everyone involved in this leans on the atrocity-and-revenge formula, particularly Bronson and director J Lee Thompson (The Guns of Navarone), two Hollywood guys who once upon a time made plenty of classic films. Snodgress's performance is unhinged, interesting but hard to watch, as we never really got to know her onscreen after Diary of a Mad Housewife. Just think of this movie as having come from the same creepy planet as the Death Wish series. --Tom Keogh

  • The Dark Half [1993]The Dark Half | DVD | (22/10/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Although it lacks the creepy subtleties of Stephen King's celebrated novel, George Romero's underrated adaptation of The Dark Half is among the best films based on King's fiction, with Romero taking care to honour the central theme while serving up some gruesome gore in the film's much-criticised finale. Inspired by King's own admission that he wrote several novels under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, The Dark Half explores the duality of a writer's impulse, ranging from literary respectability to the viscerally cathartic thrills of exploitative pulp fiction. Author and teacher Thad Beaumont (Timothy Hutton) finds himself torn between those extremes when he "kills" his profitable alter ego, George Stark (the bestselling dark half to Thad's light), who then assumes evil, autonomous form (again played by Hutton) to defend lethally his role in Thad's creative endeavours. Forced to wrestle with this evil manifestation of his own unformed twin, Thad must fight to protect his wife (Amy Madigan), their twin babies and himself. While Romero skilfully develops the twin/duality theme to explore the writer's dilemma, Hutton is outstanding in his dual roles, playing Stark (in subtly fiendish makeup) as a redneck rebel with a knack for slashing throats. Julie Harris adds class in a supporting role, and horror fans will relish Romero's climactic showdown, in which swarms of sparrows seal Stark's fate. It favours a pulp sensibility with clunky exposition to explain Stark's existence, but The Dark Half is a laudable effort from everyone involved. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Anaïs Nin (Maria de Medeiros) is a young woman in 1930s Paris whose husband is slowly defecting from art to working in a bank, leaving her very bored. When the then-unpublished Brooklyn writer Henry Miller (Fred Ward) enters her life, she embarks on a journey of seduction and sexual exploration that eventually leads from the writer to his wife, June (Uma Thurman), who finances her husband's life in Paris so he may praise her beauty in his writing. Unhappy with her husband's writing and her lovers' affair, June enters a jealous rage, forcing Henry into suffering-artist mode and Nin back to her husband. Despite having one of the more erotic scenes of the 1990s, between Nin and June, the film does not live up to its subject, largely due to a mediocre screenplay and flawed direction. The strength of the original material and Medeiros' strong performance make it worth viewing. -- James McGrath, Amazon.com

Season 2009/10 found Charlton Athletic in the third tier of English football for the first time in 28 years. And it looked as if their stay would be brief when they opened their campaign with six succesive victories a welcome reversal of fortunes after two relegations in three seasons. Manager Phil Parkinson had been unable to plan because of summer uncertainty about the clubs financial situation but he was eventually boosted by the retention of players such as Nicky Bailey Therry Racon Kelly Youga and Jose Semedo and the signing of the experienced Christian Dailly. Although they could not maintain their blistering early pace the Addicks remained in first or second place until the turn of the year. They would win exactly half of their 46 League matches and draw another 15. But the team slipped into third spot during a spell of severe weather at the start of 2010 and never regained an automatic promotion position despite briefly threatening to do so on the final day of the normal season when an unlikely combination of three different scorelines took them tantalisingly close to success. They were left to take on Swindon Town in the play-offs and went out in the heartbreaking drama of a semi-final penalty shoot-out at The Valley despite having reversed a 2-1 first-leg deficit. The club and its supporters were left crestfallen but when the dust had settled they could still look back on a memorable season including thrilling matches against Leeds United and Norwich City who claimed the automatic promotion places and Swindon who would go on to lose the play-off final at Wembley. This DVD brings together the highs and lows of the season and includes all 71 League goals plus those from the play-offs as well as brief cup action. It also features an exclusive interview with boss Parkinson reflecting on the team's fortunes during the campaign.
