  Overshadowed by Stephen Frears' Dangerous Liaisons which was shot at the same time and also used the same source of Choderlos de Laclos's epistolary novel 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' Forman's film has a lot going for it. It was scripted by Jean-Claude Carriere its director of photography was Miroslav Ondricek and it has Bening and Firth in the lead roles of Merteui and Valmont the scheming widow and her lover who bet on the corruption of an honourable woman.

  Perhaps the highest compliment you can pay to Edward Norton is that his Oscar-nominated performance in American History X nearly convinces you that there is a shred of logic in the tenets of white supremacy. If that statement doesn't horrify you, it should; Norton is so fully immersed in his role as a neo-Nazi skinhead that his character's eloquent defense of racism is disturbingly persuasive--at least on the surface. Looking lean and mean with a swastika tattoo and a mind full of hate, Derek Vinyard (Norton) has inherited racism from his father, and that learning has been intensified through his service to Cameron (Stacy Keach), a grown-up thug playing tyrant and teacher to a growing band of disenfranchised teens from Venice Beach, California, all hungry for an ideology that fuels their brooding alienation. The film's basic message--that hate is learned and can be unlearned--is expressed through Derek's kid brother, Danny (Edward Furlong), whose sibling hero-worship increases after Derek is imprisoned (or, in Danny's mind, martyred) for the killing of two black men. Lacking Derek's gift of rebel rhetoric, Danny is easily swayed into the violent, hateful lifestyle that Derek disowns during his thoughtful time in prison. Once released, Derek struggles to save his brother from a violent fate, and American History X partially suffers from a mix of intense emotions, awkward sentiment and predictably inevitable plotting. And yet British director Tony Kaye (who would later protest against Norton's creative intervention during post-production) manages to juggle these qualities--and a compelling clash of visual styles--to considerable effect.   Producing a DVD for Play, could be seen as a shameless attempt to resurrect an album which has reached saturation point as far as sales go or British tolerance will allow after the relentless use of tracks from it in films, adverts, TV shows, trailers and even football coverage. Thankfully, Moby's quality control means he refuses to rip off his fans, so the material gathered within this disk is surprisingly good. First up there's all the music videos from Play, which range from the sublime (Jonas Akerland's treatment of "Porcelain") via the cartoon ("Natural Blues" and "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad" by Susi Wilkinson, Hotessa, Laurence & Filipe Alcada, complete with cute little animated Mobys) to the ridiculous (Fredrik Bond's inspired vision for "Body Rock"). Even funnier are the outtakes for "Body Rock", which show footage of all the dancers who didn't make the grade in stupidity stakes. Along with this is an hour's worth of Moby remixes all segued together, with trippy electronic visuals for the late-night crowd. Even in the middle of the afternoon you can't fail to stare in slack-jawed wonder as a stunning remix of "Porcelain" kicks in, accompanied by smooth flowing images of urban streets. To stop you from drifting off altogether there are some more up-tempo sections to the mix, including a euphoric reworking of "Natural Blues" and a 1970's disco funk version of "Body Rock" to get your toes tapping. For those of you who thought that Moby--the born again Christian, vegan, anti-smoking, animal rights activist--took himself too serious for his own good, go straight to the Tour Videos section of the DVD: filmed all over the world, it provides a platform for Moby to be himself and he turns out to be hilariously funny as he takes you on a backstage tour of Homelands complete with crazy Scottish accent, then pops up in both Germany and France, proving himself a master of their inflexions too. Added to all these features are tracks culled from the "Later with Moby" BBC special and a separate mix CD of some of Moby's finest moments. All in all a great supplement to a modern day classic. --Helen Marquis

  Return to Oz is a 1985 live-action sequel that split critics and audiences alike: you don't fool with Mother Nature, spit into the wind, remake Casablanca, or trash the land of Oz. The 1939 classic musical is so beloved that it's almost impossible to imagine seeing Dorothy in shock therapy, a crumbled yellow brick road, the ruins of Emerald City, and the Tin Man turned into stone. But L Frank Baum, the author of the original Oz books, portrayed just that with his continuing stories of Dorothy. When you get by these tough facts, the film version is solid entertainment for the over-seven set. Dorothy (a 10-year-old Fairuza Balk in her debut) is back in Kansas, where Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) is at the end of her rope: her niece is not sleeping and going on about a place called Oz. Therapy may be the answer, but luckily the scary clinic goes dark before Dorothy can be, er, cured (but the lead-up will scare the munchkins out of most kids). She wakes up in the land of Oz, now in tatters, and searches for its king, the Scarecrow. A new set of friends, including a tin soldier, a talking chicken, and a pumpkin man, help her against new villains, including Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh)--complete with a set of detachable heads--and the evil Nome King (Nicol Williamson with a great assist from Will Vinton's Claymation). The sole directorial effort of Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch is stuffed with marvellous effects that foreshadow later works by Tim Burton and the Henson non-Muppet films. --Doug Thomas

  After a foolproof scam turns sour, Jimmy the Saint (a soulful but miscast Andy Garcia, who mainly acts with his hair) and his hard-bitten crew must put their various sordid affairs in order before facing their final bloody curtain call. It's not nearly as clever as it thinks it is, but Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead is a terminally wise-ass (and extremely violent) caper flick, and is still one of the better post-Tarantino crime opuses, with some sharp dialogue, a scenery-chewing Christopher Walken (as a paraplegic archcriminal) and unhinged performances by Treat Williams and the obsequious Steve Buscemi that must be seen to be (dis)believed. Neophyte scripter Scott Rosenberg would later pen hipper-than-thou scripts for Beautiful Girls, Con Air and Armageddon, while director Gary Fleder moved on to the somewhat more reputable Kiss the Girls. The tongue-twisting title is from a Warren Zevon song. --Andrew Wright
