  Like a roller coaster ready to fly off its rails, Van Helsing rockets to maximum velocity and never slows down. Having earned blockbuster clout with The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, writer-director Stephen Sommers once again plunders Universal's monster vault and pulls out all the stops for this mammoth $148-million action-adventure-horror-comedy, which opens (sans credits) with a terrific black-and-white prologue that pays homage to the Universal horror classics that inspired it. The plot pits legendary vampire hunter Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) against Dracula (the deliciously campy Richard Roxburgh), his deadly blood-sucking brides, and the Wolfman (Will Kemp) in a two-hour parade of outstanding special effects (980 in all) that turn Sommers' juvenile plot into a triple-overtime bonus for CGI animators. In alliance with a Transylvanian princess (Kate Beckinsale) and the Frankenstein monster (Shuler Hensley), Van Helsing must prevent Dracula from hatching his bat-winged progeny, and there's so much good-humored action that you're guaranteed to be thrilled and exhausted by the time the 10-minute end-credits roll. It's loud, obnoxious, filled with revisionist horror folklore, and aimed at addicted gamers and eight-year-olds, but this colossal monster mash (including Mr. Hyde, just for kicks) will never, ever bore you.   This is the film based on the 1970s TV sitcom Man About the House, made during the same period with the same cast. At the time, the whole idea of a single man and two single women sharing a flat, however (more-or-less) platonically, seemed terribly naughty. The scriptwriters wickedly stirred things up even further by making Richard O'Sullivan's character a randy-but-gentlemanly heterosexual, despite being a catering student--after all, in the 70s everyone just knew that all chefs were roaring poofs. The trio's sex-starved landlady (Yootha Joyce) and her rodent-like, impotent husband (Brian Murphy) were later to get their own series, George and Mildred. The plot is a perfunctory affair, as property developers attempt and fail to demolish the street in which the protagonists live. That said, the script (cowritten by John Mortimer) isn't really narrative-driven anyway, it's purely an excuse for the characters to interact with the will-they-won't-they-ooh-they-are-a-bit relationship between Robin and Chrissie (Paula Wilcox) and practically invites the viewer to cheer them on. While the transition to the big screen caused the idea to lose much of its energy, as a dollop of comedy nostalgia Man About the House is still great fun. And if you don't laugh at the jokes, just check out the clothes, cars, hairstyles and makeup, not to mention all that cigarette smoking! --Roger Thomas

  Anyone who's suffered the misfortune of stumbling upon Kevin Allen's nauseous debut Twin Town--a ramshackle Trainspotting transposed to the cinematic slag heap of Swansea--will be pleasantly surprised by this gentle sophomore effort. The Big Tease follows gay Glaswegian hairdresser Crawford Mackenzie (Craig Ferguson), a flamboyant character who stays just the right side of caricature, as he heads to LA to represent bonny Scotland in the World Freestyle Hairdressing Championship. Only there's a hitch: once in Hollywood, Crawford discovers he's only been invited to be a spectator at the event, which means the huge hotel bill he's racked up will have to come out of his own pocket. Undeterred, the stubborn stylist sets about gaining a union card and, ultimately, entry to the competition, frantically trying to establish Beverly Hills contacts with a mind to pulling a few much-needed strings. Allen's movie is an interesting hybrid, half Hollywood satire (the greed, the self-importance, the insincerity) and half sports-movie with a twist (events inevitably lead to a climactic showdown, as Crawford goes blade-to-blade with the wonderfully pompous Norwegian champ). And yet, by and large, it works, the loquacious Ferguson giving us someone to hold onto in a slippery world populated by disdainful creeps, his probity alone ensuring our heartfelt support come competition night. The filmmakers' decision to opt for a "mockumentary" format à la The Blair Witch Project and Drop Dead Gorgeous also pays dividends, for it is Crawford's candid confessions to camera that allow us to navigate beyond his carefully constructed plumage and discover the person beneath.--Jamie Graham
