Director Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce, the follow-up to his most popular hit Poltergeist, is a film that must be seen to be believed. That's not really a compliment, though, since Lifeforce isn't much of a movie when all the sound and fury is over. But you've got to admit there's something crazily admirable about a picture that starts out as a science fiction mission to Halley's comet, turns into an alien-invasion thriller featuring a beautiful naked woman (Mathilda May) who's a vampire from space and escalates into an end-of-the-world disaster flick. Armed with a big budget and a special effects crew led by Star Wars pioneer John Dykstra, Hooper and Alien cowriter Dan O'Bannon have whipped up a concoction that's got everything anyone could ask of a horror movie--from zombies running amok in London to rotting corpses and energy bolts that signal the apocalypse to come. Keeping it all together is Steve Railsback as the Halley-mission survivor who holds the key to mankind's salvation--but what fun is saving the world when you could be seduced by a sexy naked space vampire? Check out Lifeforce to see how it all turns out. --Jeff Shannon

It is difficult to know who this compilation of nominees for the 2002 BRIT Awards is aimed at. It is implausible that anybody will like everything here, and it is unbelievable that anyone possessed of rudimentary critical faculties will like more than three or four of the artists whose videos feature in this collection. Given the perennial determination of the BRITs to celebrate all that is mediocre, and the fact that 2001 was less than a vintage year by any standards, "BRIT Awards 2002" is mostly rather dismal viewing. There are a few heartening moments: Kylie Minogue releasing a decent single ("Can't Get You out of My Head") is testament more to the law of averages than her musical abilities, but the video is a small masterpiece of choreography and computer imaging. Destiny's Child and Dido also owe particular thanks to their directors, though it might reasonably be argued that the bulldozer that eventually destroys the house in which Dido simpers along to "Thank You" arrives about four minutes too late. Probably coincidentally, the best three videos (and the best three songs) are all animated affairs: Daft Punk's "Digital Love", Gorillaz' "Clint Eastwood" and Radiohead's typically baleful, and beautiful, "Pyramid Song". On the DVD: That individual tracks can be easily selected is a necessity with a compilation of this sort. The "bonus features" are barely worthy of the phrase: extremely desultory biographies of the artists, and links to the official Web sites of the BRITs and Sony. --Andrew Mueller

Because 11-year-old Rosalie has always been 'strange' her ornery father hires lovely Alicianne to be Rosalie's governess in their big gloomy house. Rosalie blames daddy and the neighbours for the death of her mentally ill mommy so she sends her cemetery pals out to kill starting with the little old lady next door whose face they rip off. As Rosalie and her zombies escalate their attacks Alicianne and Len Rosalie's older brother flee for their lives and hole up in a shack as the graveyard ghouls stage a full-scale assault. Released by exploitation king Harry Novak and sprinkled with juicy gore The Child is an atmospheric cross between 'Night of the Living Dead' and 'Carrie' byway of 'The Bad Seed' and an unnerving creature feature that reminds us just what little monsters kids can be.
