  John McTiernan (The Hunt for Red October) imaginatively directs this action comedy, which is an interesting failure with some fascinating ironies that make it well worth seeing. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays both a character named Jack Slater--a fictional cop hero who exists only in the movies (ie, the movies seen by the characters in this movie) and the actor who plays Jack Slater in the real world (ie, in the movie we're actually watching). McTiernan's hall-of-mirrors effect is fun, though Last Action Hero never quite identifies itself as a pure action movie, science fiction, a kid's movie, or anything else. (The expensive film suffered at the box office as a result and was roundly criticised for this ambivalence.) What lingers in the memory, however, is Schwarzenegger, playing himself, being confronted by Slater for having created an alter ego for film in the first place. It's a provocative moment: how often have we seen a major star blatantly wrestle with his actor's legacy in this way? --Tom Keogh

  One of Ridley Scott's most wrong-headed films, this one (like all of his movies) looks fabulous and sounds utterly ridiculous, almost from the beginning. His first mistake was casting the wonderful Gerard Dépardieu as Columbus and forcing him to speak English, which Dépardieu does with decided difficulty. After spending far too much time on the ocean with Columbus' three ships (you wish they would sail over the edge of the world), they arrive in the West Indies, only to turn around and sail back. The rest of the film deals with the not particularly comprehensible politics of Columbus' venture, which leads to the violent slaughter of trusting natives by a band of cardboard villains. Dépardieu, who radiates sympathy, looks as if he's at sea with this material. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

The eight episodes here are a little uneven, but the best stuff is classic, laugh-out-loud satire, including "Are You Right There, Father Ted", in which Morgan's titular Catholic priest is re-banished to Ireland's Craggy Island, a green rock replete with paranoid sheep, randy milkmen, Nazi memorabilia collectors and an inexplicably large community of Chinese immigrants. Outstanding, too, is "Speed 3", in which Ted discovers that a number of babies recently born on Craggy all look like a self-made swinger named Pat Mustard.   This version of Jason and the Argonauts is not a remake of the classic 1963 Ray Harryhausen feature, but a new re-telling of the Greek legend. It takes just as many liberties with the saga, but--with a running time twice as long as the original--it packs in much more of the story, building to an exciting finale filled with betrayal, retribution and copious sword-play. Made by mini-series specialists Hallmark, who also produced a lavish version of Homer's The Odyssey (1997), only the rapid fades where the commercial breaks would be really give away the fact that this is a TV feature. The multinational cast is variable, and while Jason London is unhappily wooden in the title role, such stars as Denis Hopper and Frank Langella are good value, American accents aside. Coming straight from the big screen sword and sandal epic, Gladiator, Derek Jacobi adds sheer class, while Jolene Blalock makes a breathtaking debut as Medea. The visual atmosphere is strong; the superb cinematography varying between lush beauty and the stark, sun-bleached look of Pitch Black. Production values are excellent, with several increasingly powerful and spectacular action set-pieces incorporating outstanding (for TV) CGI effects, the whole being immeasurably lifted by British composer Simon Boswell's splendid musical score.--Gary S.
