  For his 41st and final feature film, Joseph H. Lewis was able to combine the two genres in which he had excelled. The man in the director s chair for My Name is Julia Ross, Gun Crazy and The Big Combo, Lewis was one of the all-time greats in film noir. But he was also a fine director of Westerns, having made A Lawless Street, 7th Cavalry and The Halliday Brand, all of which especially the last remain underrated. Terror in a Texas Town would bring his noir sensibilities to the American West, resulting in one of his finest works. McNeil (Sebastian Cabot, The Time Machine) is a greedy hotel owner who wants to take control of Prairie City, the Texas town of the title. Keen to drive the local farmers of their land, McNeil hires a gunman, Johnny Crale (Nedrick Young, who would pen the Oscar-winning screenplay for The Defiant Ones the same year), resulting in the death of a former whaler. The dead man s son, George Hansen (Sterling Hayden, The Killing), arrives in town to inherit the farm and set the stage for revenge armed with only his father s old harpoon... Terror in a Texas Town was written by Dalton Trumbo, one of the Hollywood Ten blacklisted by the film industry and forced to write under pseudonyms or to use fronts . Two years before he helped break the blacklist with on-screen credits for Otto Preminger s Exodus and Stanley Kubrick s Spartacus, his work was credited to Ben Perry, but it demonstrates a psychological depth and political dimension that is undoubtedly that of Trumbo.   The words of the opening song pretty much describe the menu in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum--"Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone: a comedy tonight!"--a frantic adaptation of the stage musical by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove. The wild story, based on the Latin comedies of Plautus and set in ancient Rome, follows a slave named Pseudolus (Zero Mostel, snorting and gibbering) as he tries to extricate himself from an increasingly farcical situation; Mostel and a bevy of inspired clowns, including Phil Silvers, Jack Gilford and Buster Keaton, keep the slapstick and the patter perking. The cast also includes the young Michael Crawford as a love-struck innocent. This project landed in the lap of Richard Lester, then one of the hottest directors in the world after his success with the Beatles' films. Lester telescoped the material through his own joke-a-second sensibility, and also ripped out some of the songs from Stephen Sondheim's Broadway score. The result is very close to the vaudeville spirit suggested by the title--though anyone with a low tolerance for Zero Mostel's overbearing buffoonery may be in trouble. Oddly enough, amid all the frenzy, Lester creates a grungy, earthy Rome that seems closer to the real thing than countless respectable historical films on the subject. Frankie Howerd, who played Pseudolus on the London stage, kept the tradition going with his Up Pompeii TV series. --Robert Horton

  Here's Frank Sinatra in 1969 when, after a brief sortie into retirement mid-way through the decade, he returned with hit after hit culminating in "My Way", which is flagged here by audience applause in recognition of its current chart success (in Britain it was in the Top 50 for 122 weeks!). Don Costa, one of the least celebrated of Sinatra arranger/conductors, presides over a collection of songs that includes a contemporary group by Stevie Wonder, Rod McKuen and Jimmy Webb. Sinatra forsakes black tie and the formal studio surroundings for those songs, appearing in a Manhattan-style apartment dressed in casual white jumper, slacks and smoking a cigarette. But he's clearly less than engaged, and his eyes dip down to the autocue for lyrics new to him. His voice shows signs of that cigarette smoke, too: the opening of "For Once in My Life" sounds a bit rough, and he becomes audibly hoarse after the midway climax on "My Way", placed daringly as the third item on the programme. Two arrangements are different from the original studio recordings: there's a cut in the coda to "My Way", and in "My Kind of Town", the finale of the programme, there are some additional verses and a punchier accompaniment as Sinatra cues in the closing credits on screen. His line in self-deprecating humour is turned to advantage when, with the aid of clips, he reviews his early screen career ("I started in Higher and Higher and went lower and lower"). But never less than in full command of his stage act, he turns in vintage performances of "All the Way", "Fly Me to the Moon", "Love's Been Good to Me" and Victor Young's underrated "Street of Dreams". On the DVD: The picture quality in the opening songs comes over a mite bright owing to the studio lighting on the set which, at a certain angle, fogs the profile of the singer. The orchestral sound stands up well with the large string section making for a comfortable aural backdrop. The trailer builds up a keen sense of anticipation as Sinatra arrives at the studio by limousine to a silent soundtrack, walks onto an empty soundstage, throws his hat on a stool and then takes to the podium as the camera cuts to him singing "I've Got You Under My Skin" with full orchestra. Stills of the other Sinatra concerts are also featured.--Adrian Edwards

  Angela de Marco (Michelle Pfeiffer) is fed up with her life Married to the Mob. As luck would have it, her hubby Frank (Alec Baldwin) is knocked off by head honcho Tony "the Tiger" Russo (an Oscar-nominated Dean Stockwell), which leaves her free to start a new life in the Big Apple. The only problem is that the FBI are desperate to nab Tony, and manage to send the one Agent (Matthew Modine) most likely to fall in love with her. Plot-wise, then, this is predictable fluff. The joys are in the details of Jonathan Demme's direction: New York's streets come alive under his hand-held camerawork; a lot of dialogue is comically delivered direct to camera (a device he used for dramatic effect later with The Silence of the Lambs); and background characters each leave their mark given memorable--often-hilarious--screen time. As a black comedy it isn't quite so memorable as Demme's explosive earlier work on Something Wild, but if there's one thing sure to stick with you here it's the sensationally colourful late-80s fashions and hairstyles. On the DVD: Married to the Mob is a bare-bones release that only adds a trailer. It is presented in its original widescreen ratio, however, and for the most part the transfer is pretty clean. --Paul Tonks
