It's hard to imagine how shocking this film was when it first broke on the film scene in 1968. There's never been anything quite like it, though it's inspired numerous pale imitations. Part of the terror lies in the fact that this one's shot in such a raw, unadorned fashion it feels like a home movie, and all the more authentic for that. Another is that it draws us into its world gradually, content to establish a merely spooky atmosphere before leading us through a horrifically logical progression that we could hardly have anticipated. The story is simple. Radiation from a fallen satellite has caused the dead to walk and hunger for human flesh. Once bitten, you become one of them. And the only way to kill one is by a shot or blow to the head. We follow a group holed up in a small farmhouse to fend off the inevitable onslaught of the dead. And it's the tensions between the members of this unstable, makeshift community that drive the film. Night of the Living Dead establishes its savagery as a necessary condition of life. Marked by fatality and a grim humour, it gnaws through to the bone, then proceeds on to the marrow.--Jim Gay

Having made his reputation as one of the most prolific and gifted horror writers of his generation (prompting Stephen King to call him "the future of horror"), Clive Barker made a natural transition to movies with this audacious directorial debut from 1987. Not only did Barker serve up a chilling tale of devilish originality, he also introduced new icons of horror that since have become as popular among genre connoisseurs as Frankenstein's monster and the Wolfman. Foremost among these frightful visions is the sadomasochistic demon affectionately named Pinhead (so named because his pale, bald head is a geometric pincushion and a symbol of eternal pain). Pinhead is the leader of the Cenobites, agents of evil who appear only when someone successfully "solves" the exotic puzzle box called the Lamont Configuration--a mysterious device that opens the door to Hell. The puzzle's latest victim is Frank (Sean Chapman), who now lives in a gelatinous skeletal state in an upstairs room of the British home just purchased by his newlywed half-brother (Andrew Robinson, best known as the villain from Dirty Harry), who has married one of Frank's former lovers (Claire Higgins). The latter is recruited to supply the cannibalistic Frank with fresh victims, enabling him to reconstitute his own flesh--but will Frank succeed in restoring himself completely? Will Pinhead continue to demonstrate the flesh-ripping pleasures of absolute agony? Your reaction to this description should tell you if you've got the stomach for Barker's film, which has since spawned a number of interesting but inferior sequels. It's definitely not for everyone, but there's no denying that it's become a semiclassic of modern horror. --Jeff Shannon

  • Marilyn Manson - Demystifying The Devil [1999]Marilyn Manson - Demystifying The Devil | DVD | (01/09/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Diehard supporters of everyone's favourite anti-Pope will want Demistifying the Devil, if only because Marilyn Manson is all things to all of them--cutting-edge nu-nasty rock theatre act or slacker anti-hero--you take your choice. However, this very unauthorised biography (there's no footage of young Brian himself or his immediate musical circle other than a few seconds of blurry concert material) is also informative viewing for the merely curious. Mostly consisting of anecdotes from people who were either associated with him before he became famous or who were ejected from his entourage, it soon becomes clear that MM was and remains a genuinely talented visionary. It also becomes clear that the best thing he ever did to further his career was to abandon the huddle of derivative no-marks who constituted the "scene" in his home town of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and whose parochial ramblings dominate this unintentionally hilarious documentary. If you're a fan, you'll have your faith confirmed. If you're not, you'll still end up feeling strangely pleased that both Manson and those he left behind are getting the respective levels of attention they deserve. --Roger Thomas

For their third annual May 1 European Concert commemorating the date that the orchestra was founded, the Berlin Philharmonic chose to perform in the Royal Albert Hall in London under Bernard Haitink. Haitink was then the music director at Covent Garden, and he brings an operatic intensity to their first item, Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture. He characterises it brilliantly, with stirring religious solemnity for Friar Lawrence's music and fiery explosions in the fight sequence. Frank Peter Zimmerman then gives a forthright, heavily late-romantic reading of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3 which might not be to everyone's taste, but which seems somehow appropriate in the Victorian splendour of the hall. The Rite of Spring allows the orchestra to show off its star woodwind players, who cope with the score's taxing wind writing with polished brilliance. The opening sounds fantastic, and Haitink tailors the tempo to the boomy acoustic so that not a detail is lost. It's a performance literally dripping with energy: you can see the sweat pouring off the players as they dig into the piece's meatier moments. Overall, this is an excellent concert from an orchestra on top form. On the DVD: European Concert, 1993 includes a 28-minute documentary in German about the Albert Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonic's visits to the UK. There's fascinating substantial footage of Furtwängler conducting the orchestra in London, and a long interview with Haitink in which he discusses his relationship with the BP. There are subtitles in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.--Warwick Thomson
