  • Barbie In The Nutcracker [2001]Barbie In The Nutcracker | DVD | (25/03/2002) from £11.99   |  Saving you £-1.00 (N/A%)   |  RRP £10.99

Look who became a star. Barbie comes to life in the computer-animated Barbie in the Nutcracker, taking the longtime-favorite doll into a new realm. The 76-minute tale is a slight variation on the traditional story based on Tchaikovsky's music. Instead of an open-ended dream, Barbie and her escort, the Nutcracker (soon to be Ken, natch), are on an adventurous quest. Along the way there are more creatures and derring-do than the original. The sole known voice talent, Tim Curry, has a good old time as the Mouse King, and the animated dancing is gracefully adapted from New York City Ballet members. A few clever characters, bright animation and wonderful music should entrance any Barbie fan from age three to nine. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

  • The Other (DVD & Blu-ray Dual Format) (1972)The Other (DVD & Blu-ray Dual Format) (1972) | Blu Ray | (23/02/2015) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £17.99

A genuinely chilling psychological horror from director Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird) The Other provides enough gruesome twists and turns to keep you guessing right up until its shocking finale. Mysterious accidents befall a family on a farm in depression-era Connecticut resulting in the death of a beloved father and a cherished twin brother. But when nine-year-old Holland begins to see – and speak to – his twin the remaining family members can only wait in terrified anticipation for more tragedies to occur... as it slowly dawns on them that the accidents may not be accidental after all. With the same haunting tension as The Exorcist and The Omen Mulligan’s The Other eschews gore in favour of richly detailed psychological horror in its depiction of deeply disturbed children. Beautifully shot by the extraordinary Robert Surges (Ben Hur) and adapted for the screen by Thomas Tryon from his own best-selling novel The Other is an unsettling horror masterpiece.

The late Dennis Potter was a master at mining the popular songs of the 1930s and '40s for dramatic effect, but he never did it better than in The Singing Detective. The inestimable Michael Gambon plays a mystery writer named Philip E Marlow, who is suffering a torturous bout of psoriatic arthritis in hospital, where he is a victim of both his disease and the National Health Service. Unable to move without pain, he escapes into his imagination, plotting out a murder tale in which he is both a big-band singer and a private eye. But Potter and director Jon Amiel also mix in flashbacks of Marlow's youth and his unhappy marriage to explain how the real Marlow reached this sorry pass. Flawlessly, intricately, kaleidoscopically assembled, the six one-hour episodes fly by like some fantastic fever dream. –Marshall Fine

  • Inspector Gadget 2 [2003]Inspector Gadget 2 | DVD | (12/05/2003) from £7.97   |  Saving you £10.02 (125.72%)   |  RRP £17.99

Inspector Gadget 2 sees the unlikely detective with higher-tech gadgets and more special effects. French Stewart (from TV's Third Rock from the Sun) replaces Matthew Broderick as the bumbling detective in a plot that revolves around the glitch-ridden Gadget being replaced by a completely robotised female. Parent Trap's Elaine Hendrix does what little she can with the one-dimensional role of "G2". Still, Gadget falls for his rival and the pair team up with his smart-as-a-whip niece Penny and her brainy beagle for a showdown with Claw. Where Broderick struggled to humanise the caricature of an inept detective in the 1999 original, Stewart doesn't even try. Instead he plays Gadget as a cartoon with endless over-the-top theatrics. The enhanced special effects may placate young viewers, but without the comedy of the original, that's small comfort. --Kimberly Heinrichs
