The killing of John Lennon is a chilling insight into the mind of Mark David Chapman, the 25 year old narcissist who gunned down John Lennon outside his Dakota apartment in New York in 1980.Meticulously researched and filmed on actual locations where events occurred, it is a gritty and imagistic examination of a celebrity stalker's mind leading up tot he kill a look into his descent into madness and exorcism. Independently financed and filmed over three years, The killing of John Lennon is unflinching in its presentation of the truth. It does not set out to condone the shooting of Lennon or his killer's desire for fame.

  • The Newton Boys [1997]The Newton Boys | DVD | (19/07/2004) from £7.39   |  Saving you £5.60 (75.78%)   |  RRP £12.99

The Newton Boys were the most successful bank robbers in the history of the United States. They never killed anyone, never snitched and only robbed banks (just bigger thieves, in their opinion), until their final deal, which was a botched train robbery for $3 million. Engagingly played by Matthew McConaughey, Ethan Hawke, Skeet Ulrich and Vincent D'Onofrio, the Boys don't have the kind of flaws of more brutal criminals that make for more volatile dramas. The film ambles along in a leisurely way to tell its story of the Newtons' bank-robbing career, with an ever-present air of reverent Americana. This may make some viewers impatient and cause a glow in others. It seems like a departure for director Richard Linklater (Slacker and Dazed and Confused)--a costumer to be sure but Linklater's deliberately amiable pace perfectly balances the Boys' personalities. You may wander into this movie and feel right at home. The golden-hued cinematography of Peter James (Driving Miss Daisy) adds a level of comfort that makes everything warm-like. The end credits intercut archival footage of two of the real-life Newton boys toward the end of their lives, one from a 1980 appearance with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. --Jim Gay

With its atmospheric Cornish locations and all-star cast, The Uninvited is a highly effective and spine-tingling ghost story in the classic Hollywood tradition.Seeking respite from the bustle of London life, writer Roderick Fitzgerald (Ray Milland - Dial M for Murder and The Lost Weekend) and his sister Pamela (Ruth Hussey, The Philadelphia Story) move into a neglected clifftop mansion and set about making it their home. However, it isn't long before an unnerving presence makes itself felt: an eerie chill lingers in the rooms and distant wailing is heard at night. Despite Roderick's cynicism, it becomes increasingly clear that the house is haunted - but why in such a snug haven would the dead trouble the living?Martin Scorsese and various critics, including William K. Everson and Leonard Maltin, regard The Uninvited as one of the best ghost stories ever filmed.

  • EDtvEDtv | DVD | (24/03/2003) from £5.50   |  Saving you £4.49 (81.64%)   |  RRP £9.99

The third entry of 1998-99's cinematic TV trilogy kind of got lost in the shuffle following The Truman Show, an art film masquerading as a blockbuster, and Pleasantville, a heartfelt feel-good movie masquerading as a special-effects extravaganza. Edtv is nothing more than it appears: a scruffy comedy about fame and its discontents. Matthew McConaughey stars as Ed, a white-trash rube who gets his own dawn-to-midnight TV series in which every aspect of his life, no matter how sordid or dull or embarrassing, becomes mass entertainment (it inverts Truman by having the protagonist invite the pervasive cameras). Predictably, fame makes him miserable and, unsurprisingly, he finds a way out of his predicament. Albert Brooks covered this same territory in the funnier Real Life, and it's probably not the best idea for a load of comfy celebs to preach to us about how difficult fame is. But the film is cannily cast, including a number of performers who themselves have fallen victim to stupid media tricks (McConaughey, Ellen DeGeneres as the network executive, Elizabeth Hurley as a vamp hitching her star to Ed's and Woody Harrelson as Ed's even dumber brother). Structurally, the movie is a mess. It looks as if the filmmakers had the choice between making a fully realised, two-and-a-half-hour-long movie that no one would sit through or one that clocks in under two hours but has a lot of plot holes; they opted for the latter (Hurley's character disappears, practically without comment). Still, there are enough laughs to keep things moving and as a shaggy dog tale it's decent fun. --David Kronke, Amazon.com --This text refers to another version of this video.
