  • The Buddy Holly Story [1978]The Buddy Holly Story | DVD | (25/04/2005) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £7.99

Buddy Holly laid the foundations for a generation of popular music with his ground-breaking combination of country music and rhythm and blues. This film tells his story from it's explosive beginning to its tragic end with Gary Busey giving an electrifying Oscar nominated performance (Best Actor 1978) as the young genius from Lubbock Texas who changed the tune of rock 'n' roll history. Young Buddy's studious appearance gave no hint of the 'new music' which was about to take the world by storm. His unique brand of rock 'n' roll catapulted him and the Crickets to national stardom in just three short years with hits such as 'That'll Be The Day' and 'Peggy Sue'. Despite opposition from the mainly redneck Texas community his mother who nagged him to get a proper job and his girlfriend who wanted to tame him - by the age of 22 Holly had it all but the trials and tribulations of fame began to take it's toll and his brilliant career ended in tragedy all too quickly. 'The Buddy Holly Story' is one of the best biopics ever produced for the cinema and features 12 of his greatest hit songs as well as winning the 1978 Academy Award for Best Adaptation Score. It's a dynamic tribute to one of the most influential rock 'n' rollers of all time and his legacy.

  • Stripshow [1996]Stripshow | DVD | (17/06/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £7.99

Coming soon to a hotel pay channel near you, Stripshow, with its rednecks and top-heavy trailer-trash, is the American softcore equivalent of movies like Bridget Jones's Diary, which are more-or-less targeted at the kind of people who are in them. Tane McClure plays a stripper who acquires a suitcase full of money from an aged punter who expires during a show. She than attempts to track down an ex-lover, who eventually wanders off into the desert to die rather than risk appearing in the sequel. The end. Actually, there's rather a lot of wandering off into the desert in this movie. There's also some--but not much--of the usual faked bonking, but the closest thing to a genuinely erotic scene is the obligatory lipstick-lesbian encounter which takes place in a Native American teepee (although you can't help thinking that, somewhere off-camera, Fox Mulder is being distracted from communing with a shaman), and even that's a pretty truncated episode--after all, Billy-Bob, it just ain't natural. Anyone who'd like to see McClure in a real film may prefer to check out Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas instead. On the DVD: Stripshow has nothing extra on this 4:3 release other than a few cast biogs--not even subtitles, so listening to the dialogue is unfortunately compulsory. --Roger Thomas

NASA's worst nightmare turned into one of the space agency's most heroic moments in 1970, when the Apollo 13 crew was forced to hobble home in a disabled capsule after an explosion seriously damaged the moon-bound spacecraft. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton play (respectively) astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise in director Ron Howard's intense, painstakingly authentic docudrama. Hit American sitcom Will and Grace is as perky as Friends and as wittily urbane as Frasier. The premise concerns Will (Eric McCormack), a mildly uptight lawyer who agrees to have as a flatmate his best friend, interior designer Grace (Debra Messing). Their relationship has all the hallmarks of lovers--emotional dependency, little things that get on each others' nerves, strong mutual interests and volcanic arguments. The only snag is that while Grace is straight, Will is gay. Though not shy of poking sharp fun at that situation, Will and Grace is among sitcom's most potent and sophisticated antidotes to homophobia. Though initially a little too pleased with its own camp pertness, the show grows and grows on you with successive episodes, finally becoming indispensable. It also benefits from secondary characters Jack (Sean P Hayes) and Karen (Megan Mullally), also gay and straight respectively, both outrageously and hilariously irresponsible characters: he a free spirit and freeloader, she's "working" as Grace's assistant even though she doesn't need the money, having married it. Despite its diamond and rapid-fire punchlines, Will and Grace conveys enough sense of the main characters' lovelorn predicament to prevent it from becoming too cute. --David Stubbs
