  • The Flashing Blade - Vol. 1 [1967]The Flashing Blade - Vol. 1 | DVD | (20/08/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

The Flashing Blade is a tale of high adventure set in 1630 as the dashing Chevalier de Recci (Robert Etcheverry) undertakes a dangerous mission across occupied territory to avert war between France and Spain. This 13-episode serial was made for French television in 1967, and in dubbed form regularly shown on the BBC during school holidays from 1969 through the 1970s (usually when 1965's Adventures of Robinson Crusoe was having a rest). This release is aimed at that generation who, from the spine-tingling theme song onward, remember the show with tremendous affection. Like the classic Hollywood movie serials, each 23-minute episode packs in a couple of action sequences; some plot twists, a little comic relief and very variable acting and costumes. For a children's programme the story is remarkably complex, and takes a while to gather pace. The colours have faded, the use of classical music is clumsy, but the dubbing is surprisingly accomplished. The swashbuckling action is at odds with the more serious historical drama, but viewed with nostalgia The Flashing Blade is thoroughly entertaining vintage TV. --Gary S Dalkin

Recently released from prison after serving an eight-year stretch for killing a mob boss ex-cop Hawk (Kristofferson) returns to his native home of Rain City and takes up residence in a room at the back of the caf owned and run by his former lover Wanda (Bujold). At the same time a beautiful waif-like young woman Georgia (Singer) her sociopathic boyfriend Coop (Carradine) and their new-born child also arrive in their trailer and make the caf's parking lot their temporary home. Desperately in need of money Georgia takes on a waitressing job at Wanda's place while Coop slowly but surely is lured into a life of petty crime. Already a regular customer at the caf Hawk soon falls under Georgia's spell and sets out to seduce her during the lonely nights that Coop is not around. Meanwhile Coop's criminal activities have attracted the attention of gangland boss Hilly Blue (Divine) a ruthless crimelord whose method of dealing with freelance crooks operating on his turf extends to drowning them in their cars. When Coop's life is threatened by Hilly and his men Hawk finds himself in a position where he must decide to put his own life on line by helping him or risk losing the woman he most desires. Humorously and stylistically employing the classic film noir themes of crime responsibility loyalty and love Rudolph's film presents a refreshingly original take on the genre one that is brilliantly enhanced by composer Mark Isham's (In The Valley Of Elah; The Black Dahlia; Crash) superbly evocative score.

The fantastic visions of Belgian film-makers Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet find full fruition in this fairy tale for adults. Evoking utopias and dystopias from Brazil to Peter Pan, Caro and Jeunet create a vivid but menacing fantasy city in a perpetually twilight world. In this rough port town lives circus strongman One (Ron Perlman), who wanders the alleys and waterfront dives looking for his little brother, snatched from him by a mysterious gang preying upon the children of the town. Rising from the harbour is an enigmatic castle where lives the evil scientist Krank (Daniel Emilfork), who has lost the ability to dream and robs the nocturnal visions of the children he kidnaps, but receives only mad nightmares from the lonely cherubs. Other wild characters include the Fagin-like Octopus--Siamese twin sisters who control a small gang of runaways-turned-thieves--Krank's six cloned henchmen (all played by the memorable Dominique Pinon from Delicatessen), and a giant brain floating in an aquarium (voiced by Jean-Louis Trintignant). Caro and Jeunet are kindred souls to Terry Gilliam (who is a vocal fan), creating imaginative flights of fancy built of equal parts delight and dread, which seem to be painted on the screen in rich, dreamy colours. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

Stunningly restored for the 50th anniversary, BELLE DE JOUR is an elegant and erotic masterpiece and undoubtedly Luis Buñuel's most accessible film. Screen icon Catherine Deneuve plays Séverine, the glacially beautiful, sexually unfulfilled wife of a surgeon, whose blood runs icy with ennui until she takes a day-job in a brothel. There she meets a charismatic but sinister young gangster (Pierre Clémenti), and ignites an obsession that will court peril. Buñuel uses diffused lighting, dark colours, and shadows throughout the film to temper the gravity and emotional impact of each uncomfortable scene. Left to our own imaginative devices, the result is a film that is highly unsettling, perverse, and inevitably tragic. SPECIAL FEATURES: The Last Script A Story of Perversion or Emancipation?
