Released in Britain in 1939 Murder in Soho is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. One of the brightest spots in Soho was the Cotton Club run by American Steve Marco. Steve was proud of his club's reputation; it was an excellent 'blind' for more important activities. So when double-crossing Joe Lane threatened to tell the police of Steve's past Joe had to be murdered. Steve was not going to have anyone destroy what had taken years to build... Teamed with sidekicks Moore Marriott and Graham Moffatt the trio formed one of British cinema's greatest comedy gangs. Oh, Mr Porter!, one of their finest vehicles, finds Hay as congenial William Porter, an inept railway worker who is shunted off to the dead-end job of stationmaster in Buggleskelly, Northern Ireland. The delight of the film is in the interplay between Hay and Marriott, the single-toothed dotty old-timer, and Moffatt, the chubby smart kid, as they fail the most basic requirements of their jobs but come up trumps when investigating the ghost of One-Eyed Joe and his haunted mill. --Kim Newman One of Will Hay's brisker comic efforts, 1936's Convict 99 sees Dr Benjamin Twist, Hay's clueless schoolmaster, caught in a case of mistaken identity and invited to head up a prison for especially hard-boiled criminals. It's a typical outtake from Hay's bizarrely lawless universe in which, for all his harrumphing and bluster, he's unable to exercise any sort of discipline whatsoever over the men in his charge. Hay plays exactly the same character from film to film, one so ill-equipped for any situation he's equally suited for all. Whereas Twist is an incompetent who somehow muddles through, Hay the comic actor is a master of timing and double-takes who knows precisely how to create the air of a shambles. --David Stubbs

  Within These Walls offered an authentic portrayal of day-to-day prison life as well as the progress of the penal system reflecting the shift from a Victorian ethos of punishment to an emphasis upon rehabilitation. Focussing on the trials of a newly appointed governor and her attempts to liberalise the regime of Stone Park H.M. Prison for women Within These Walls was a huge success for LWT and would set the template for later series such as Prisoner: Cell Block H and Bad Girls; the series is still fondly remembered more than 30 years after its original screening. Googie Withers (The Lady Vanishes) stars as the principled and compassionate prison governor Faye Boswell whose task is to understand and help the women who find themselves in the closed world of Stone Park. With strong writing and direction Within These Walls remains a high point of British television drama. The third episode of this series - Nowhere for the Kids - no longer exists in any format but its script is included in PDF format on Disc One as a special feature.

It Always Rains on Sunday: Rose Sandigate used to be engaged to local bad-boy Tommy Swann but he found himself locked up and thrown in Dartmoor prison. Rose eventually marries George a sedate but gentle man. However Tommy has escaped from Dartmoor and needs Rose's help... The Maggie: It looks as if the 'Maggie' an old and decrepit puffer boat is destined for the scrap-yard. That is until an American shipping company accidentally awards the puffer boat a valuable contract. When the mistake is discovered the head of the company himself decides to put things right. Calvin B. Marshall is a first rate hustler but the puffer crew outsmart him at every turn to keep their contract.

Dead of Night is a classic horror anthology that effectively plays on those timeless fears. Mervyn Johns stars as a man who has been summoned to a house with a group of strangers he has never met but has seen in his dreams. As they convene, he predicts certain events will happen as they do in his dreams and when they do, the other guests relate their own experiences with the supernatural, including tales of a possessed mirror, a sinister ventriloquist's dummy and an eerie premonition of death. Throughout the group meeting, the protagonist fears something horrible will happen to him and we are left to wonder what it might be. The film's final, revelatory sequence offers an unexpectedly horrific surprise. It may have been made in 1945 but Dead of Night is still spooky. --Bryan Reesman
