Titles Comprise: The Dam Busters: Dr Barnes Wallis was possessed with a seemingly crazy idea - the creation of a bouncing bomb designed to destroy the Ruhr dams and paralyse the enemy's industrial nerve centre. He fought persistent scepticism and disbelief that such a feat was possible though even with the matchless skill of RAF Wing Commander Guy Gibson and his squadron could such a mission succeed? Against The Wind: Starring Robert Beatty Jack Warner and Simone Signoret this is the story of a diverse group of people from very different backgrounds who were brought together in one of the strangest enterprises of the war. Sabotage was their job; sabotage organised from London in the form of macabre practical jokes as ingenious as they were injurious to the enemy. The work was over-clouded with the constant fear of discovery - and what it would mean. The Colditz Story: One German maximum security prison was more famous than any other during World War II - Colditz castle. Although Colditz was considered 'escape proof' its boundaries were challenged many times by Allied prisoners of war with fatal results. On 15th October 1942 a group of British servicemen made the most historic and perhaps the most courageous attempt of all...

  • Bride Of Chucky [Blu-ray]Bride Of Chucky | Blu Ray | (23/10/2017) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Brace yourself: this is a clever, consistently entertaining and even inspired continuation of the mean-spirited slasher series. For those not in the know, Chucky is a mop-top kid's doll come to life with the soul of a serial killer and the voice of Brad Dourif (doing his best Jack Nicholson). Revived by his former paramour Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly, looking every inch a life-size Barbie in stiletto heels and skintight black leather), Chucky proceeds to turn his human sweetie into a pint-sized Talking Tina doll with attitude, and together they hit the road for a magic amulet and young new bodies to inhabit. They hitch a ride with sweet young runaways Katherine Heigl and Nick Stabile and leave a trail of corpses bloodied, burned and cut to ribbons. The kids are cute, but the real heat is generated by the latex lovers who use murder as foreplay and consummate their renewed romance in a night of passionate sex ("Shouldn't you wear a rubber?" "I'm all rubber!"). Hong Kong director Ronny Yu (The Bride with White Hair) directs with a light touch and against all odds transforms walking dolls Chucky and Tiffany into funny, energetic, full-blooded characters: l'amour fou has never been more crazy. John Ritter costars as Heigl's overprotective uncle (another obstacle on the road to dolly freedom) and Alexis Arquette is hilarious as a lanky goth nerd. The wild conclusion leaves room for another high-concept sequel. The DVD features two commentary tracks, a behind-the-scenes documentary, and "Jennifer Tilly's Diary." --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

  • T.S. Eliot - The Search for Happiness [DVD]T.S. Eliot - The Search for Happiness | DVD | (25/01/2021) from £7.79   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

T.S. ELIOT THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS is both an exploration of Eliots life as a poet, playwright, essayist and critic and an examination of Eliots personal and spiritual journey. Eliots sudden first marriage ended unhappily. His first wife, Vivien Haigh-Wood, was disapproved of by Eliots family. Soon after the marriage she had an affair with Eliots friend and teacher Bertrand Russell. Vivien was committed by her brother in 1938 to an asylum in which she died in 1947, never seeing Eliot again. Of his first marriage he wrote: To her, the marriage brought no happiness. To me, it brought the state of mind out of which came The Waste Land. It was late in life that Eliot himself found happiness, when at the age of 68 he secretly married his secretary Valerie Fletcher, a woman thirty-eight years younger than himself. The marriage offered Eliot a deep and extraordinary happiness. Eliot was lifted from his loneliness, he had a social life for the first time; Eliot and Valerie travelled extensively together, they loved each others company - and they went to the theatre something which, together with Eliots own love of cats, must have influenced Valerie when, many years after her husbands death, she unexpectedly agreed that Old Possums Book of Cats could be adapted by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Trevor Nunn into the show we know now as Cats!

  • Gothic Fantastico | Four Italian Tales Of Terror | Blu-rayGothic Fantastico | Four Italian Tales Of Terror | Blu-ray | Blu Ray | (10/07/2023) from £49.98   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

While groundbreaking director Mario Bava (Black Sunday, Black Sabbath) remains the most well-known purveyor of Italian Gothic horror, many other filmmakers tried their hand at the form throughout the 1960s as part of a hugely prolific and popular cycle. Gothic Fantastico presents four off-the-beaten path titles from this classic period, all of which demonstrate Italy's ability to expand genre beyond the classic literary monsters that dominated elsewhere. Gaslighting abounds in Massimo Pupillo's Lady Morgan's Vengeance - a delicate tale of romance and mystery, with a sprinkling of sadism and the supernatural - as newlywed Sir Harold Morgan (Paul Muller, Nightmare Castle) attempts to destroy his new bride (Barbara Nelli, Double Face) with help from his sinister maid (Erika Blanc, Kill, Baby Kill!). Meanwhile, the perverse influence of Poe is used to great effect in Alberto De Martino's The Blancheville Monster - a tale of family curses and madmen in the attic, as Emilie de Blancheville (Ombretta Colli, Gladiator of Rome) returns home to her brother Rodéric (Gérard Tichy, Hatchet for the Honeymoon) and discovers her own family may be out for her blood. Mino Guerrini's The Third Eye features not only a very early role for Italian cult film icon Franco Nero, but a plot that borrows several elements from Hitchcock, layered with a whiff of necrophilia. Finally, Damiano Damiani's The Witch takes a more avant-garde approach, when a young historian (Richard Johnson, Zombie Flesh Eaters) is lured to work for an ageing woman, only to be held captive when he becomes obsessed with her beautiful daughter (Rosanna Schiaffino, The Killer Reserved Nine Seats). Madness, obsession and messed up families are the order of the day in these four lesser-known monochrome gems from Italy's peak Gothic period, fully restored in 2K from their original negatives and presented alongside an array of in-depth extras. • My Beautiful Laundrette [1985]My Beautiful Laundrette | DVD | (10/09/2001) from £10.43   |  Saving you £-0.44 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

In case you'd forgotten, My Beautiful Laundrette will remind you of those mid-80s days when Thatcherism ruled the earth (or so it seemed) and money was king. Stephen Frears' low-budget realisation of Hanif Kureishi's subversively critical play captures the contradictions of that time in a way that's as fresh today as when it was new. Omar's wheeler-dealer uncle, Nasser (Saeed Jaffrey), sums it up when he says, "In this damn country, which we hate and love, you can get anything you want". He sets up Omar (Gordon Warnecke) with a rundown laundrette and the instruction to make it a success, which Omar temporarily does, with the help of his childhood friend Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis). When the film first came out, it was the gay content that dominated the column inches, whereas now it seems a sensitive and multi-faceted summation of its decade, exploring social, ethnic and sexual issues and contradictions. Bringing together two such different characters as Omar--Asian, ambitious, for whom success is defined by wealth--and former childhood friend Johnny--white trash, ex-National Front--was inspired. Watching their friendship develop into love, and the ensuing bitterness and misunderstanding that they suffer from friends and family is very poignant. All the lead roles are well taken, the contradictory character of Nasser in particular. By turns, funny, touching and anger-inducing, this is a movie that wears its age lightly and its era proudly. On the DVD: the picture is in 4:3 ratio with a Dolby Digital soundtrack. There's an original trailer and filmographies of the four main characters, with an additional biography for Day-Lewis. --Harriet Smith
