The Best of Monty Python's Flying Circus will probably be purchased mostly for the standards--those sketches that have become the staple material of every office joker and pub bore in Christendom--the Spanish Inquisition, the Australian philosophers, the Ministry of Silly Walks. Good fun though these are, once you've expunged the memory of a million witless impersonators, this collection is really worth owning for the material that never quite registered in the popular consciousness. Sketches such as the Summarise Proust Competition, the misunderstanding over the Hungarian phrasebook and John Cleese's manically embittered architect with a grudge against the Freemasons are every bit as funny as the more familiar hits and, free of any associated baggage, they will startle and delight the younger viewer as much as Python must have startled and delighted their parents when first broadcast in the 1970s. On the DVD: The Best of Monty Python's Flying Circus is a three-disc set, and each volume is equipped with a sketch selector that is fussier than strictly necessary. But this is more than compensated for by the wonderful Terry Gilliam animations that the viewer uses to navigate. Subtitles are available in English only. --Andrew Mueller

Much as he loves his post-'Stones blues 'n' roots supergroup, the quiet bassist is content to remain just that in Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, captured in the studios of the German TV music programme Ohne Filter--Musik Pur ("Unfiltered pure music"--snappy, or what?). The musicians give a good account of a selection from the band's recorded output; look out in particular for the excellent "Walking One and Only", "Anyway the Wind Blows" and the stonking workout at the end of the concert. BWRK includes Graham Bond, Gary Brooker, Georgie Fame, Albert Lee, Wyman's songwriting partner Terry Taylor plus various other players, all of whom clearly love what they're doing. Fame seems to be the frontman a lot of the time, a role which suits him, so it's too easy to forget that it's the little chap with the tiny hands somewhere behind him who's responsible for this classy little unit. On the DVD: Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings on disc offers standard TV 4:3 picture but a choice of sound formats (Dolby 5.1 or 2.0 and PCM Stereo) and has various extras including artist biographies, a self-congratulatory interview with the show's producer and a rather pompous account of the label's recording techniques. --Roger Thomas

  • Will Hay - Convict 99 [1936]Will Hay - Convict 99 | DVD | (03/12/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

One of Will Hay’s brisker comic efforts, 1936’s Convict 99 sees Dr Benjamin Twist, Hay’s clueless schoolmaster, caught in a case of mistaken identity and invited to head up a prison for especially hard-boiled criminals. Unable to believe his luck, Dr Twist celebrates his success with a few drinks, is still drunk when he arrives to take up his post and, confused with a new batch of inmates, ends up behind bars himself. There he makes the acquaintance of Moore Marriott as "Jerry the Mole", who has been digging an escape tunnel for nigh on 40 years and is only a fortnight away from his release date. When eventually reinstated as governor, Hay runs a loose ship, with inmates waited on by wardens, allowed to bet and even play the stock market. However, when a criminal on the outside attempts to defraud Twist, their indignation is naturally aroused. Convict 99 is a typical outtake from Hay’s bizarrely lawless universe, in which for all his harrumphing and bluster, he’s unable to exercise any sort of discipline whatsoever over the men in his charge. Hay plays exactly the same character from film to film, one so ill-equipped for any situation he’s equally suited for all. Whereas Twist is an incompetent who somehow muddles through, Hay the comic actor is a master of timing and double-takes who knows precisely how to create the air of a shambles. On the DVD: the original 1930s film stock has been well restored, give or take the odd crackle. But there are no extras, except scene index. --David Stubbs
