Il film affronta questa tematica con realismo e cinismo al tempo stesso, con uno stile investigativo molto interessante. Vincitore del Sierra Award 1998 per il miglior documentario.

  Penny Serenade is sentimental and heartwrenching yet Cary Grant and Irene Dunne make it all seem real and director Stevens gives the film a romantic glow which makes this one of the most fondly remembered films of the 1940's. George Stevens framed this entire film using flashbacks an old phonograph playing the songs from various stages in the lives of two people who fall in love and are nearly torn apart by tragedy. The screenplay is sentimental and heartwrenching yet Cary Grant and Irene Dunne make it all seem real and director Stevens gives the film a romantic glow which makes this one of the most fondly remembered films of the 1940's. The story opens as Julie (Dunne) is getting ready to leave Roger (Grant) because of the pain caused by a tragedy in their lives he cannot talk about so that they can begin to heal. She laments that they simply don't need each other anymore. When she finds an old stack of records she begins to trace the various stages of their love through the memories recalled by each song. Whether their love and marriage can be saved is only resolved in the last few moments of this beautiful film.

Hawks also had his cast move at twice the normal speed so the screen looks frantic from scene to scene thus conveying the urgency of the news world he was depicting. It's undoubtedly Cary Grant's greatest comedic role proving once again the amazing versatility of this Hollywood legend. (Dir. Indeed Kelly MacDonald, who starred in the latter, appears in Strictly Sinatra as a similar rough-around-the-edges love interest. The film revolves around what happens when hapless Glasgow lounge-singer Tony Cocozza (played by the always capable Ian Hart) crosses paths with the local Mafiosi. Their initial mutual attraction is derived from the ability of the parties to support each other's delusions: Cocozza wishes he was Sinatra, they wish they were Sinatra's dubious cronies. But Cocozza swiftly realises that he has, as the song goes, bitten off more than he can chew, and proceeds, predictably enough, from doubt to epiphany to redemption to happy ending.--Andrew Mueller
