A freewheeling portrait of Ken Kesey and the Merry Prankster's fabled road trip across America in the legendary Magic Bus. In 1964, Ken Kesey set off on a LSD-fuelled cross-country road trip to the New York World's Fair. He was joined by The Merry Band of Pranksters, a renegade group of counterculture truth-seekers, including Neal Cassady, the American icon immortalized in Kerouac's On the Road, and the driver and painter of the psychedelic Magic Bus. Kesey and the Pranksters intended to make a documentary about their trip, shooting footage on 16MM, but the film was never finished and the footage has remained virtually unseen...until now.

Following on from the release of ""A Night At the Family Dog"" last year this new DVD brings together two further TV programmes from producer Ralph J Gleason covering the San Francisco psychedelia scene of the late sixties and early seventies. Jefferson Airplane perform at an intimate indoor venue whilst Quicksilver Messenger Service are filmed in the open air. There are also cameo appearances from David Crosby and Jerry Garcia. ""West Pole"" features a diverse range of acts including Ace Of Cups Sons Of Champlin the Grateful Dead and the Steve Miller Band performing live in various settings and takes a more analytical view of the music and the times.
Formed in 1965 in San Francisco with bluegrass - country enthusiast Jerome 'Jerry' Garcia on guitar 'Pigpen' McKernan on keys Bob Weir also on guitar Phil Lesh on Bass and Bill Kreutzmann on drums the musicians performed for a while as the Warlocks which were basically a folk and bluegrass outfit. However acid rock and psychedelia popular at the time - especially in San Francisco - helped the band merge a more modern sound with its affinity for rootsier music and drugs played a hand in making their music that much more intoxicating. During December 1965 Garcia renamed the band The Grateful Dead from a song about a pauper's funeral. Jerry Garcia the granddaddy of all deadheads died in 1995 of heart failure while in drug rehab thus ending an impressive reign.
