Since leaving College he has not settled down to any job. His brothers taunt and insult him and sell the paper on which his poems are written as waste papers to a grocer for a few annas. Vijay in trying to trace the papers finds that a woman has taken them away from the grocer. He then comes across the streetwalker who had taken away his manuscript and remembered his songs by heart. He tries to retrieve his manuscript but fails. Meanwhile Vijay goes to the annual function of his college to recite some poems of his. There he meets Meena the girl with whom he had a flaming romance in his College days. Meena is married to Mr. Ghosh a publisher who offers him a job in his establishment.However the job does not last for long as the publisher gets suspicious of Meena's attachment to Vijay and the poet is once again without a job. While still jobless Vijay learns of the death of his mother - the breaking of the last link with his home. He is desperate and depressed. A friend misleads him and gets him drunk and then takes him to the house of a dancing girl. There Vijay witnesses the tragedy of the fallen women and feels for them. In the same locality he again comes across the streetwalker who sensing his frustration gives him her sympathy and encouragement. But Vijay tells her that he has made up his mind to end his life. The streetwalker puts him to sleep but finds him missing the next morning. After a few days the newspaper announces the news of his death. After his death his poems are published and become a great success. For a fleeting moment at a county fair Nawab had a glimpse of fair moon-like face as it peeped from within the confines of a black 'burqa'. He tried without avail to find the whereabouts of the girl. The next day a torn corner of her veil came into his possession; and he handed it over to a trusted women employee with instructions to find the owner of the veil.Neither Nawab nor his employee was aware that the girl according to a Muslim custom (which purports to cement friendships) had exchanged veils with another girl. Nawab's woman employee found that her search for the torn veil led her beloved was Bano. Forthwith Nawab began to make plans for marrying Bano.Nawab's ailing mother was in no condition to undertake the Haj pilgrimage. She decided to send as her proxy a Maulvi Saheb. But the Maulvi wouldn't even think of going leaving his youthful daughter without chaperon. He said he would go on one condition: that Nawab marry his daughter. Nawab however having already lost his heart prevailed on Aslam a close friend of his to marry the Maulvi's daughter. While he himself when he finally got to Bano found that Bano was not his beloved!And then once again at a fair Nawab saw the girl in the black 'burqa'. She was accompanied by a girl in a white burqa. Nawab Aslam and their friend Shaida all three of them followed the black burqa to the girl's home. But they did not know that the girls while they were at the mazar had exchanged their veils. The 'home' of the 'girl' turned out to be the residence of Aslam's uncle. Aslam unhesitantly promised to arrange Nawab's marriage with his (Aslam's) cousin Naseema.One day per chances Nawab arrived at Aslam's house when his eye's lighted on Aslam's wife Jamila he had a revelation. Aslam too learned for the first time that the beloved Nawab had sought fruitlessly was Jamila! Aslam was very much beholden Nawab. He therefore decided to ruin his own home in order to bring out Nawab's happiness. He started visiting the establishments of tawaaifs' (singing girl): so that he should gain notoriety Jamila's folks should ask for a divorce and then Jamila should be free to marry Nawab.Nawab and Naseema were scheduled to wed soon. Set in the 16th Century India Baaz is the story of Prince Ravi (Guru Dutt) who lives with his mother the Queen in Malabar. Since the Portuguese traders have practically begun to rule the state the royal family has been reduced to mere figureheads. Nisha (Geeta Bali) is the daughter of a revolutionary who along with her father is arrested by the Portuguese and sold as slaves on a ship. Witnessing the killing of her father she becomes a revolutionary herself fights the Portuguese takes over the ship and ultimately becomes the leader of her group. Each time she attacks a Baaz (falcon) comes and sits on her shoulder and hence her group is named BAAZ. Meanwhile Prince Ravi is travelling by a Portuguese ship to Portugal to get crowned by their Queen. Nisha and her group attack the ship but Ravi is unharmed because he is Indian. Nisha also realises that he is the same man she had met on an earlier occassion when sparks flew... The attraction ignited again is mutual and Ravi not only romances her but also helps her to come ashore and start to fight against the Portuguese not revealing his royal identity. Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam' is the story of Bengal at the turn of the 19th century when the powerful Zamindar dominated the social life of the province. One such Zamindar family that of the Chaudhuris lived in a palatial mansion - 'Badi Haveli. Manjhle Babu and Chhote Babu were the two brothers who owned Badi Haveli - the ancestral property that had come down to them through earlier generations. Both in keeping with the family were given to a life of lethargy and philandering where wine flowed and the tinkling anklets of 'nautch' girls were preferred to the endearing smiles of wives. Chhote Babu's wife Chhoti Bahu a middle class woman accepted by the landed aristocracy in marriage for her great beauty could not however reconcile herself to the libertine habits of her spouse. Deprived as she was of the love and presence of her husband Chhoti Bahu's spirit rose in revolt. But tradition as much as the high walls of Badi Haveli checked her from giving expression to it. Even as the lords of Badi Haveli spend their nights in orgies of drinking and philandering and their days in flying pigeons and catching up on lost sleep there arrived at the mansion a village simpleton Bhootnath a relation of an employee of Badi Haveli - Master Babu. In search of a job he soon found one in the Mohini Sindoor Factory as a clerk. In the factory he came across Jaba the sweet daughter of the owner Subinoy Babu. The rustic habits of Bhootnath touched the tender feelings of Jaba in no time. Having read that the application of Mohini Sindoor would bring back for her the errant husband Chhoti Bahu sent for Bhootnath to get her the Sindoor. Bhootnath soon emerged as her confidante and sympathizer. To bring her errant husband back to her Chhoti Bahu set an example of self-sacrifice that left everyone in Badi Haveli stunned with surprise.
