In the early 1860s the Gatling gun was invented and the Wild West was never to be the same again! Some believed the gun was pure evil a machine so potent and capable of such destruction that no one man should be able to wield its awesome power. Others saw it as a means to winning the West once and for all. When the US Cavalry is sent to deal with the rouge Indian Two-Knife the Gatling gun is at the centre of a bloody and savage tug of war and when the stakes are this high it's not easy to tell who is your friend or who is your foe.
Stephen Fry's directorial debut about the young, wild, party-loving creatures of the 1930s. Sex, scandal, celebrity... Some things never change...
David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd's sitcom 'Allo 'Allo started life in 1982 as a modest one-off spoof of the classic 1970s drama series Secret Army. A throwback to an earlier era during the 1980s heyday of alternative comedy, the show's decidedly un-PC mix of bedroom farce and crudely drawn national stereotypes was subsequently stretched over nine series in all (1984-1992), making it TV's successor to the long-running Carry On series. 'Allo 'Allo was not only similarly preoccupied with seaside postcard humour, it was also blessed with a cracking ensemble cast (including Carry On veteran Kenneth Connor) whose sheer energy eked out comic gold from even the laziest jokes about humourless Germans, cowardly Italians, "Tally ho!" Brits and onion-selling Frenchmen. Like Croft & Lloyd's Are You Being Served, it was the cast interaction more than the material itself that produced the laughs. Despite its determination never to vary the formula from week to week, the show had at least one virtue--it wasn't afraid to offend anyone. --Mark Walker
British comedy starring Joan Collins, Luke Goss and Martin Kemp. A brother is faced with an impossible proposition in this period Australian thriller.
Producers Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage) and Mark Johnson (Chronicles of Narnia) join forces to deliver Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, a tale of hair-raising, spine-chilling horror.
Don't Say A Word Michael Douglas is tremendous (Tribune New Services) in this psychological thriller in the classic Hitchcock tradition (The New York Observer). When the daughter of a prominent New York psychiatrist (Douglas) is kidnapped his only hope for her safe return is to pry a 6-digit number from the memory of a troubled teenage girl; time is running out... One Hour Photo In this unnerving thriller an employee in a one-hour photo lab (Robin Williams) becomes obsessed with a young suburban family... What Lies Beneath It had been a year since Dr. Norman Spencer (Ford) betrayed his beautiful wife Claire (Pfeiffer). But with Claire oblivious to the truth and the affair over Norman's life and marriage seemed perfect. So perfect that when Claire tells him that she is hearing mysterious voices and seeing a young woman's ghostly image in their home he dismisses her mounting terror as delusion. However as Claire moves closer to the truth it becomes clear that this apparition will not be dismissed and has come back for Dr. Norman Spencer... and his beautiful wife.
TT 2010 Review
L.A Confidential a sordid tale of sex scandal betrayal and corruption throughout the police politics and press in 1940's Hollywood is a film noir masterpiece. The Oscar-winning screenplay is a compelling blend of LA history and pulp fiction. Kim Basinger's potrayal of conflicted femme fatale is outstanding and Pearce's character is an intriguing blend of amorality and ambition.

She gave her daughter everything. But everything was not enough. HBO's new miniseries Mildred Pierce brings to life the memorable characters introduced in James M. Cain's classic 1941 novel of pride and privilege in the middle class. Starring Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet and co-written and directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Todd Haynes this five-part drama is an intimate portrait of a uniquely independent woman who finds herself newly divorced during the Depression years as she struggles to carve out a new life for herself and her family. The story explores Mildred's unreasonable devotion to her insatiable daughter Veda (Evan Rachel Wood) as well as the complex relationship she shares with the indolent men in her life including her polo-playing lover Monty Beragon (Guy Pearce) and ex-husband Bert Pierce (Brian F. O'Byrne).

In a time when it seems that every other movie makes some claim to being a film noir, LA Confidential is the real thing--a gritty, sordid tale of sex, scandal, betrayal and corruption of all sorts (police, political, press--and, of course, very personal) in 1940s Hollywood. The Oscar-winning screenplay is actually based on several titles in James Ellroy's series of chronological thriller novels (including the title volume, The Big Nowhere and White Jazz)--a compelling blend of LA history and pulp fiction that has earned it comparisons to the greatest of all Technicolour noir films, Chinatown. Kim Basinger richly deserved her Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of a conflicted femme fatale; unfortunately, her male costars are so uniformly fine that they may have canceled each other out with the Academy voters: Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kevin Spacey and James Cromwell play LAPD officers of varying stripes. Pearce's character is a particularly intriguing study in Hollywood amorality and ambition, a strait-laced "hero" (and son of a departmental legend) whose career goals outweigh all other moral, ethical and legal considerations. If he's a good guy, it's only because he sees it as the quickest route to a promotion. --Jim Emerson
Columbia's biggest hit of 1943, Sahara confirmed the superstar status Humphrey Bogart attained with his Warner Brothers' North African adventure, Casablanca (1942). Surrounded by the Germans on three sides, Bogart's tough-as-they-come Sergeant Joe Gunn takes his tank and a crew of American, British and French soldiers into the Sahara to reach the retreating allied forces. But when they find that the only water for 100 miles is also the target of a German battalion they decide to take a desperate stand. Early scenes present the characters with assorted perils: thirst, sandstorms and a German air attack. The characters are rather stereotypical: the cowardly Italian prisoner, the Frenchman obsessed with food, the German humourless and fanatical, though the British come out well, and there's a sympathetically drawn black British Sudanese soldier (Rex Ingram). The director was Zoltan Korda, the man behind such British classics as The Four Feathers (1939), and though Sahara lacks the scale of that adventure, Korda's experience pays off in mounting the extended and suspenseful siege/action climax. With support from Lloyd Bridges and Dan Duryea, Oscar-nominated photography by Rudolph Mate and a fine score by Miklós Rózsa, Sahara is a taut, gripping desert war thriller which wouldn't be bettered until Ice Cold in Alex (1958). On the DVD: The black and white picture is presented in the original 4:3 ratio and looks very good for its age, though there are numerous brief instances of substantial print damage. Audio is strong, clear mono. Given the age of the movie it is not surprising the only extras are filmographies and a small selection of beautifully reproduced original advertising posters. The film is presented with alternative soundtracks in French, Italian and Spanish, as well as with English, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Finnish subtitles. There are trailers for The Caine Mutiny (1954), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and The Guns of Navarone (1961). --Gary S Dalkin
