Before he arrived in Hollywood to leave his indelible (and inimitable) mark on timeless comedies like Trouble in Paradise and The Shop Around the Corner Ernst Lubitsch created an expansive body of work in Germany that proved to be as varied in its tone as it was sophisticated in its measure of man and woman. This box set collects six recently restored works from the silent phase of Lubitsch's career and casts new light on the director both as a fully-formed comic master and as a virtuoso of cinematographic technique. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present these six works by Ernst Lubitsch for the first time on DVD in the UK. ICH M''–CHTE KEIN MANN SEIN (1918) One of the first collaborations between Lubitsch and the exuberant Ossi Oswalda Ich m''chte kein Mann sein [I Wouldn't Like to Be a Man] is a concise sketch of society life in three acts. When Ossi's uncle goes away on a business trip a new guardian steps in to tame the distractable niece. But Ossi finds a way out of the house and into a grand ball... by way of a brazen cross-dressing scheme -- and triggers what is perhaps Lubitsch's most twisted finale. DIE PUPPE (1919) Four amusing acts from a toy-chest - so reads the opening title of the comic masterpiece Die Puppe. [The Doll.] adapted by Lubitsch and co-scenarist Hanns Kr''ly from a libretto by A. M. Wilner (based in turn on a tale from E. T. A. Hoffmann). Ossi Oswalda stars in a double-role as both the mischievous daughter and automatonic creation of a wildly coiffed dollmaker. When a wealthy baron decides the time has come for his prudish nephew to take a wife an uproariously ribald plot unwinds into what is perhaps the world's first-ever sex-doll comedy. DIE AUSTERNPRINZESSIN (1919) As Die Austernprinzessin. [The Oyster Princess.] Ossi Oswalda makes another turn as a plutocrat's rambunctious daughter - now the heiress of a global oyster empire devoting her wiles once again to the service of man-ipulation. A comic high-point in the master's oeuvre Die Austernprinzessin. showcases the trademarks of the Lubitsch Touch and its ten-fingered dexterity resulting in a film that is simultaneously clever concise and risqu''. SUMURUN (1920) By turns melodramatic and grotesquely comic Sumurun brings together performances by star-players Paul Wegener (Der Golem.) Pola Negri Harry Liedtke and Ernst Lubitsch himself (in the role of an ultra-pathetic hunchbacked minstrel) for this ensemble tale pulled from the milieu of The Arabian Nights. Featuring hundreds of extras milling through open-air set-pieces and dusky harem-chambers alike Sumurun demonstrates Lubitsch's ability to transfigure rote romance into vibrant pageant. ANNA BOLEYN (1920) Emil Jannings plays King Henry VIII in the story of Anne Boleyn's movement from the outskirts of the court to the royal boudoir and off to the chopping-block. Suffused with an atmosphere of entrapment that would not be out of place in later films by Fritz Lang and prefiguring the stately contretemps in John Ford's Mary of Scotland Anna Boleyn proceeds with a deathward momentum unique in Lubitsch's oeuvre. DIE BERGKATZE (1921) Set in one of Lubitsch's hallmark mythical kingdoms Die Bergkatze [The Mountain-Lion / The Wildcat] finds Lubitsch in exuberantly expressionistic mode employing a host of optical masks to create perhaps the most visually audacious comic spectacle of his career. Pola Negri plays the daughter of a band of thieves; seduction of army commander (and audience) ensues. Lubitsch's personal favourite work of all his German films Die Bergkatze represents a peak in both Lubitsch's silent oeuvre and the silent cinema as a whole.

Jamie Foxx stars in this biopic of legendary soul and R&B singer Ray Charles. Skilfully edited and with a keen eye for period detail the narrative weaves in and out of the past in an interlocking tapestry of the man's rise to fame in the 1950s and '60s. Growing up poor black and blind in the rural south Charles learns under the tutelage of his tough-love mother (Sharon Warren) to turn these handicaps into assets. With this training Ray eventually plays his way into a major deal with Atlantic records and earns icon status as an American legend. Along the way the high cost of fame leads him to engage in abusive relationships manipulative behaviour and struggles with drug and alcohol problems. This is a dynamite film for the music alone (Charles's actual recordings are used in the film) but Foxx's career-benchmark performance transcends Ray's biopic roots turning this into a piercing full-on character study: unflinching sometimes harrowing and ultimately deeply moving. The sheer joy of Charles's music comes alive in Foxx's movements and his character matures convincingly and powerfully. A stellar supporting cast is on hand to back him up every step of the way including Larenz Tate as producer Quincy Jones and Kerry Washington as Ray's long-suffering wife Regina.

Combining the bio-horror elements of his earlier films whilst anticipating the technological themes of his later work, Videodrome exemplifies David Cronenberg's extraordinary talent for making both visceral and cerebral cinema. Max Renn (James Woods) is looking for fresh new content for his TV channel when he happens across some illegal S&M style broadcasts called Videodrome. Embroiling his girlfriend Nick (Deborah Harry) in his search for the source, his journey begins to blur the lines between reality and fantasy as he works his way through sadomasochistic games, shady organisations and body transformations stunningly realised by Oscar-winning makeup effects artist Rick Baker. Hailed by his contemporaries John Carpenter (he's better than all of us combined!) and Martin Scorsese (no one makes films like he does) as a genius, Videodrome was Cronenberg's most mature work to date and still stands as one of his greatest. • Zane Grey - Box Set 2 [1946]Zane Grey - Box Set 2 | DVD | (22/10/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

Zane Grey (1872-1939) was one of the most popular authors of western fiction ever, and 60 years after his death many of his 78 books, such as Riders of the Purple Sage, are still in print. In the silent era Hollywood filmed many of his stories with stars such as Tom Mix and Jack Holt. Grey knew the west well, particularly the deserts of Arizona and Utah, and demanded accurate locations for the films. Later, however, many of these films were remade, sometimes two or three times, without Grey's involvement, and the relation between novels and films grew much looser. The films are quintessential B-moveis: black and white, just over an hour, featuring minor stars and formulaic plots with some music and comedy thrown in. Committed fans of the western genre will not be disappointed, and others will derive pleasure from the delightful Jane Greer in Sunset Pass and Tim Holt, son of Jack, in the other three films. The location shooting, mostly in the Lone Pine area of California, has an authentic feel. Titles are: Under the Tonto Rim (1947); Thunder Mountain (1947); Sunset Pass (1946); Wild Horse Mesa(1947). On the DVD: This box set contains two DVDs, each of which include two movies deriving from Zane Grey novels. Print quality and sound is generally acceptable, though Under the Tonto Rim has poor definition and is a bit scratchy. Aspect ratio is 14:9. The DVDs contain no extras of any kind. --Ed Buscombe

Hit American sitcom Will and Grace is as perky as Friends and as wittily urbane as Frasier. The premise concerns Will (Eric McCormack), a mildly uptight lawyer who agrees to have as a flatmate his best friend, interior designer Grace (Debra Messing). Their relationship has all the hallmarks of lovers--emotional dependency, little things that get on each others' nerves, strong mutual interests and volcanic arguments. The only snag is that while Grace is straight, Will is gay. Though not shy of poking sharp fun at that situation, Will and Grace is among sitcom's most potent and sophisticated antidotes to homophobia. Though initially a little too pleased with its own camp pertness, the show grows and grows on you with successive episodes, finally becoming indispensable. It also benefits from secondary characters Jack (Sean P Hayes) and Karen (Megan Mullally), also gay and straight respectively, both outrageously and hilariously irresponsible characters: he a free spirit and freeloader, she's "working" as Grace's assistant even though she doesn't need the money, having married it. Despite its diamond and rapid-fire punchlines, Will and Grace conveys enough sense of the main characters' lovelorn predicament to prevent it from becoming too cute. --David Stubbs
