In 1941 Dr RV Jones became convinced that the Germans had developed their own radar system that would account forincreasing RAF bomber casualties. The hunt was on! Eventually an enemy Wrzburg system was located on the cliffs ofNorthern France at Bruneval and seizing it would be the solution to overcoming the enemy radar problem. A joint operationwas planned by HQ Combined Ops that would involve all three Services, including the newly raised and barely parachutequalified C Company, 2nd Parachute Battalion, Commanded by Major John Frost. The planning went well but the rehearsals involving the Royal Navy were all disastrous. As the narrow window of moon andtide approached it was decided 'to bash on'. Nine of the twelve sticks of Paratroopers were dropped by 51 Squadron andthe Germans were caught napping on a winters night. However, they quickly responded and the Paras had a serious fighton their hands to keep the enemy at bay while the experts, who the Paras had orders to kill rather than let fall into enemyhands, dismantled. With the enemy closing in the job was done and the force started to withdraw but elements of Frostsplan were beginning to unravel. It seemed that they may be blocked but with the Paras converging on the beach theysecured their escape on the badly delayed Royal Navy landing craft. In Britain's darkest hour the success of the Bruneval raid was just what Churchill needed and the information gained saved the lives of many air crew.

  • Britten: Owen Wingrave - Berlin/NaganoBritten: Owen Wingrave - Berlin/Nagano | DVD | (22/12/2003) from £24.99   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

Owen Wingrave is perhaps Britten's most radical opera, both politically and artistically. Originally written for television, and here presented in a 2001 Channel 4 version, the 1970 score is based, like The Turn of the Screw, on a Henry James ghost story. Britten, though, is more in tune than James with the pacifism into which Owen revolts from a long family tradition of military service. The fluid, impassioned, often declamatory music given Owen makes him one of the most sympathetic of Britten's outsider protagonists, though he has a streak of self-centredness, which stops him being an implausible paragon. Gerald Finley is quite admirable in the part, conveying fully the sense that by losing and dying at the hands of family ghosts, Owen demonstrates the integrity which is central to his character. The other parts are admirably filled here, notably Martyn Hill as Owen's harsh General grandfather, Josephine Barstow as his aunt and Charlotte Hellekant as the fiancee who unknowingly sends him to his death. They and Elizabeth Gale are quite extraordinary in the first act quartet of recrimination and condemnation. This excellent performance compares vocally with the original on almost entirely equal terms--modern technology means that the ghost scenes are far more dramatic and plausible. Kent Nagano and the Berlin Orchestra do full subtle justice to the chamber orchestra sonorities of one of Britten's most interesting scores, never overstressing its complex musical architecture at the expense of the drama. On the DVD: Owen Wingrave is presented in a widescreen 16:9 visual aspect ratio with PCM stereo sound. It is accompanied by The Tender Heart, a documentary about Britten's career full of personal reminiscences by his surviving friends, colleagues and family, that concentrates on Peter Grimes, the War Requiem and Death in Venice, the three popular masterpieces of his early, middle and late career. It has menus and subtitles in English, French, German and Spanish. --Roz Kaveney

Giuliano Carnimeo's uncut 1971 thriller 'The Case Of The Bloody Iris' (a.k.a. 'What Are Those Strange Drops of Blood Doing On Jennifer's Body?') is a classy example of the Italian giallo thriller. The sensual Edwige Fenech plays a model who moves into the apartment of a slain colleague and soon fears that she's next on the killer's list. Carnimeo directing under his preferred pseudonym Anthony Ascott constructs the movie as a series of sudden murders and last-second fake-outs and he distracts the audience with half-naked models up until the climactic revelation of the killer's identity. Dig that groovy Bruno Nicolai score!

  • Freaks [1932]Freaks | DVD | (20/10/2000) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

One of the most famous, most shocking and, for much of its existence, most elusive of cult films, Tod Browning's Freaks remains worthy of its dubious top billing by literary critic Leslie Fiedler as the greatest of all Freak movies. At the centre of the story are two circus midgets, Hans and Frieda (already well known in the 1930s through film and advertising appearances as Harry and Daisy Earles), whose marriage plans are blasted when Hans becomes the target of the aerialist Cleopatra's plot to marry him then kill him off for his money. During what is certainly one of the most notorious scenes in cult film history, the wedding party of freaks ritually embrace Cleopatra as one of us. Through her undisguised horror at this and her gruesome punishment by the freaks, the film bluntly confronts viewers about our awkwardness about different bodies while simultaneously stirring up fear and alarm in familiar horror-movie style. Better known for the Bela Lugosi version of Dracula (1931), Brownings showmanship was equally a product of the circus (he was himself an adolescent contortionist in a travelling show). His meshing of circus and cinema--two dangerous entertainments--produces Freaks' uniquely disquieting effect.Startled and indignant preview audiences forced the producers to add an explanatory foreword to the film but even this crackles with sensationalism as it veers between sideshow-style sympathy and fright warning. None the less, protests and local censorship ensued and the film never reached the mass audience for which it was made. Still, some of the real stars of the midway Ten-in-One shows of the 1920s and 30s (Johnny Eck, Daisy and Violet Hilton the Siamese twins, Prince Randian, the Hindu Living Torso) are showcased here as themselves and it is their undeniably real presence in what is otherwise familiar fictional terrain which is still so provocative. --Helen Stoddart
