  While it invites charges of Hollywood nepotism, Orange County overcomes that stigma with a delightful cast of newcomers and veterans alike. It's no better or worse than many teen comedies, but director Jake Kasdan (son of director Lawrence Kasdan) astutely combines teen-flick staples (stoner gags, raucous parties) with a biting undercurrent of southern California absurdity. This comedic texture helps Colin Hanks (son of Tom) and Schuyler Fisk (daughter of Sissy Spacek) to prove their big-screen promise. They play (respectively) an Orange County teen and aspiring writer named Shaun who yearns for admission to Stanford, and his sensible girlfriend who knows just how to nurture his dreams. Much of the comedy arises from the foibles of Shaun's dysfunctional family (played to perfection by Jack Black, Catherine O'Hara and John Lithgow), while unbilled cameos by Ben Stiller and Kevin Kline add zest to a movie that tries to be different, and mostly succeeds. --Jeff Shannon

  The continuing popularity of horror spoofs has created an opportunity for low-quality slashers such as A Crack In the Floor to pass themselves off as humorous. The story follows axe-wielding psychotic hermit Jeremiah who meets a bunch of fresh-faced young hikers and the movie employs every trick in the genre's book but still fails to rise itself above cheap exploitation (best indicated by the tasteless rape of Jeremiah's mother that prefaces the action). Brazenly claiming to feature Tracy Scoggins and Gary Busey--who in reality appear for about five minutes each--the film features young unknowns, the most high profile being Saved By the Bell's Mario Lopez. Which is fitting really because the film, with its mix of teen enthusiasm, redneck stereotypes and crass violence, is little more than that show meets The Dukes of Hazzard meets Deliverance meets Friday the 13th. Recommended for connoisseurs of everything gory and tacky but no-one else. On the DVD: The DVD manages to keep the quality set so spectacularly by the film itself--featuring an appalling trailer, a reprint of the information on the disc's box, biographies of the handful of established actors who make the briefest of cameos and trailers for some equally naff TV movies.   Sherlock Holmes was by all accounts born on 6th January 1854, and for more than a century his name and appearance has been known in every country of the world. The pipe, the deerstalker cap and the magnifying glass - details which are so familiar that if Sherlock Holmes were to appear amongst us today we should recognise him at once. Holmes is still however an enigmatic character, wrapped in as much mystery as the crimes he tried to solve, and as in most legends, it is often difficult to separate fact from fiction. According to the Arthur Conan Doyle stories, which first appeared in the Strand Magazine in 1891, he practised as a consulting detective between 1881-1904, while living at 221b Baker Street with his friend and colleague Doctor John H. Watson. These short films, made for television and produced by Sheldon Reynolds, were filmed in France in the mid 1950s and feature Ronald Howard, the son of the actor Leslie Howard, as Sherlock Holmes and Howard Marion-Crawford as Dr Watson.
