Titles Comprise:The Patient's Eyes:Murder Rooms is based on the relationship between Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle (Charles Edwards) and the real-life inspiration behind the famous fictional detective - forensic pathologist Dr. Joseph Bell (Ian Richardson). Set in the late 1800s, this BBC1 series follows Bell and Doyle as they attempt to solve various mysteries. Doyle, now a newly qualified doctor, is troubled by a beautiful, young patient claiming to be the victim of a stalker - a shadowy figure who follows her into town on a bicycle. As Doyle himself discovers, her fears appear to be more than mere fancy, and soon the incomparable Dr. Bell is on the case. As the two investigate further, events take a gradually more sinister turn with corpses starting to appear, an old house with a gruesome past and the worrying disappearance of Doyle's young and beautiful patient. Could all this be connected to the mysterious stalker? Can Dr. Bell once again employ his famed methodology to solve the case? Or will even he be prepared for the final twist that awaits them? The Photographer's Chair:1882: London is in the grip of spiritualists and sances. Arthur Conan Doyle joins Dr Joseph Bell in a labyrinthine task of investigating a number of corpses found mutilated, floating in the River Thames. Their quest to uncover the architect behind the gruesome murders leads them through London's underground world of soothsayers and mediums. As the two sleuths probe deeper, they find themselves dangerously caught up in a 'spiritualism' darker and more terrifying than either man could possibly have imagined. The Kingdom Of Bones:When the public unwrapping of an allegedly ancient Egyptian mummy turns out to reveal the fresh corpse of a contemporary gentleman, it is clear to Dr. Joseph Bell and Doyle that foul play is at hand. After a post mortem proves that the deceased was indeed the victim of a brutal murder, the doctor and his friend resolve to discover the killer. In their search they become acquainted with a Canadian art collector who appears to be equally keen to solve the riddle of the mummy. But can appearances be trusted? The White Knight Stratagem:The suicide of a mysterious young woman and the murder of two men appear to be inextricably linked. When Dr. Joseph Bell is asked to assist the police, it soom becomes clear that this is more than just a routine case. Dr Bell's relationship with the Chief of investigation is put in the spot light as old resentments come to the surface jeopardising a quick conclusion to the murders. Bell calls in Arthur Conan Doyle for support, but when Doyle seems to side with the Chief rather than his mentor, cracks start to appear in their long friendship. Can Joseph Bell's extraordinary powers of deduction reveal that there is more to this case than meets the eye? Or will he be proved wrong for the first time in his career? In the Footsteps of Sherlock Holmes:In a time when Londons seedy underworld reigned and crime had changed the face of Victorian Society a single man stood up against the status quo: Holmes, a man known the world over for his precise logic and infallible reasoning. Join host, Patrick Macnee, in London, a city where murders were committed, mysteries revealed and criminals brought to Justice. Macnee takes the viewer from the places Sherlock Holmes lived and spent time to the starting points of his most exciting hot pursuits. Also included is rarely seen vintage footage of Sherlock Holmes, the widely portrayed character of the silver screen.

  • Alien [Blu-ray]Alien | Blu Ray | (17/04/2019) from £13.08   |  Saving you £2.91 (22.25%)   |  RRP £15.99

By transplanting the classic haunted house scenario into space, Ridley Scott, together with screenwriters Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, produced a work of genuinely original cinematic sci-fi with Alien that, despite the passage of years and countless inferior imitations, remains shockingly fresh even after repeated viewing. Scott's legendary obsession with detail ensures that the setting is thoroughly conceived, while the Gothic production design and Jerry Goldsmith's wonderfully unsettling score produce a sense of disquiet from the outset: everything about the spaceship Nostromo--from Tupperware to toolboxes-seems oddly familiar yet disconcertingly ... well, alien.Nothing much to speak of happens for at least the first 30 minutes, and that in a way is the secret of the film's success: the audience has been nervously peering round every corner for so long that by the time the eponymous beast claims its first victim, the release of pent-up anxiety is all the more effective. Although Sigourney Weaver ultimately takes centre-stage, the ensemble cast is uniformly excellent. The remarkably low-tech effects still look good (better in many places than the CGI of the sequels), while the nightmarish quality of H.R. Giger's bio-mechanical creature and set design is enhanced by camerawork that tantalises by what it doesn't reveal. On the DVD: The director, audibly pausing to puff on his cigar at regular intervals, provides an insightful commentary which, in tandem with superior sound and picture, sheds light into some previously unexplored dark recesses of this much-analysed, much-discussed movie (why the crew eat muesli, for example, or where the "rain" in the engine room is coming from). Deleted scenes include the famous "cocoon" sequence, the completion of the creature's insect-like life-cycle for which cinema audiences had to wait until 1986 and James Cameron's Aliens. Isolated audio tracks, a picture gallery of production artwork and a "making of" documentary complete a highly attractive DVD package. --Mark Walker

  • Charles II [2003]Charles II | DVD | (16/02/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

One of the better BBC costume dramas of recent years, 2003's Charles II: The Power and the Passion depends very strongly on its central performance. Fortunately, Rufus Sewell is admirable throughout as the saturnine, witty monarch who has retained popular fondness down the centuries in spite of his conscientious adherence to the bad and losing cause of absolute monarchy. Adrian Hodge's intelligent script dramatises the issue in quick sound bites--many politicians accepted the Restoration to avoid chaos and were determined to bring Charles to heel, whereas he was determined to defend the position for which his father had been martyred. If that meant handing the throne to his Catholic brother in default of a legitimate son of his own, so be it. The four hour-long episodes cover the Restoration, the Plague and the Fire of London, the secret treaties with France and the Popish Plot, as well as giving us a fair bit of Charles's moderately happy marriage to Catherine (Shirley Henderson in the most hideously accurate historical hairdos ever) and his affairs with various mistresses. Among a number of fine supporting performances, Rupert Graves stands out as Buckingham, the friend who betrayed Charles. This sort of costume drama only ever works if the acting is as good as it is here. On the DVD: Charles II on disc comes with a making-of documentary and a commentary on the first episode from writer Adrian Hodge and the director and producer. It also includes an extended documentary on Charles's back story--his education, his attempt to fight Cromwell's forces, his period on the run in England and his long exile--in which a number of eminent historians, including Richard Holmes and Ronald Hutton, talk about how he became the king he was. --Roz Kaveney
