Gore Vidal once described the superannuated Ronald Reagan as a "triumph of the embalmers' art", but seasoned punk warrior Iggy Pop - herein captured Live At The Avenue B venue in Belgium in 2000 - is cheating the ageing process without recourse to formaldehyde, though doubtless he'd probably like to give it a try in a different context. Naked to the waist like the rock 'n' roll berserker he's always been and with his lithe torso resembling artexed leather, Iggy is growing old disgracefully. Even in his advanced years, armed with nothing more hazardous than an acoustic guitar, he professes to take "no shit". What follows - and which could have occurred at any Iggy gig anywhere in the world at any time over the last 25 years - is a source of much age-defying re-assurance; lasso tricks with the mic lead, surfing the crowd, getting stroked by the audience in an interestingly pertinent preamble to "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and dishing out "Raw Power" like Jerry Lee Lewis strapped to an electric chair. Long may this real wild child remain an untamed beast. --Kevin Maidment
In the Twenty First Century there's a new endangered species... Man. In a post-apocalyptic nuclear-scarred future the world has become a radioactive neon drenched industrial wasteland populated by the disenfranchised and the demented. Amidst the dust and decay of a poisoned landscape a 'Zone Tripper' manages to salvage a disembodied robotic head. But what is initially mistaken for discarded techno trash is in fact the mechanical remains of the M.A.R.K 13: a merciless killing machine programmed to activate exhilarate and exterminate. After ending up in the isolated apartment of an introverted artist the M.A.R.K 13 re-assembles itself for an eye gouging chainsaw wielding body drilling skull-crushing rampage where no flesh shall be spared. Inspired by the 2000AD comic strip SHOK: Walter's Robo Tale and Directed by Richard Stanley (Dust Devil) Hardware features a face pounding soundtrack and appearances from twisted rock legends Iggy Pop Motorhead's Lemmy and Fields Of The Nephilim's Carl McCoy. There were 3 distinct periods in the career of David Bowie during the 1970s. The first of course consisted of his Glam years defined best by the startling Ziggy Stardust album. At the other end of the decade came the Berlin trilogy - three dark industrial yet ambient and often joyous records. But sandwiched between these is what has come to be known - via the man's own comments - as the Plastic Soul Era an era just as creative magnificent and popular as any other during Bowie's
