Jeff Bridges, Jessica Lange and Charles Grodin star in this remake of the adventure classic from director John Guillermin. Oil executive Fred Wilson (Grodin) sees the chance to make his fortune when he stumbles upon a remote island whose inhabitants worship a giant ape-god named Kong. Capturing the mighty beast, Wilson brings Kong back to New York, earmarking him as the greatest attraction to come to Broadway. The ape has other ideas, however, as he looks to escape and goes on the rampage through the streets of the Big Apple.
One of the successful run of pre-war Ealing comedies that secured George Formby's enduring popularity with the British public, It's in the Air finds everyone's favourite gawp fulfilling his dream of joining the RAF though, of course, he does it the hard way! Partly filmed at the famous London Air Park, it co-stars Polly Ward, Jack Hobbs, Garry Marsh and Hal Gordon and is presented here as a brand-new High Definition transfer from original film elements in its original theatrical aspect ratio. Hapless George's dreams of flying are continually thwarted, and when he's even rejected for a job as an Air Raid Warden he sneakily tries on his brother-in-law's RAF despatch rider uniform. Finding an urgent communiqué in its pockets he decides to deliver it himself... and ends up with his head in the clouds though not in the way he'd expected!
Sophisticated to a point, this well-executed wolf-man tale works due to its clever setting and enormous star power. We all know Jack Nicholson can go nuts but the script makes his character aware of his changes, sometimes for the better, early on. The setting, a publishing house in the middle of a takeover, gives the characters dramatic life before the horror elements kicks in. A senior editor about to get the boot, Nicholson's character becomes a new man after being bitten by a wolf. He takes on challenges at work, lives a more robust life and attracts a new love. But will his new-found energy consume him? Director Mike Nicholson keeps the action alive in the first half but the film peters out at the end with cheap theatrics and the overuse of slow motion. Michelle Pfeiffer has little to do as simply the love interest with a grittier than average personality. Better is James Spader as a smarmy colleague. Nicholson is in fine form, relying on his keen gift to spark interest (a twitch of the head, a look in the eyes), instead of heavy doses of movie make-up. Giuseppe Rotunno's sweeping camerawork sets the mood quite well. Wolf is easy to recommend, with the added feature it's hardly gratuitous. --Doug Thomas

Director Martin Brest rocketed to the top of Hollywood's A list with the blockbuster success of Beverly Hills Cop, and this 1988 follow-up is even better. Midnight Run is a genuine rarity--an action comedy that's dramatically satisfying--thanks to a sharp script by George Gallo, the superb teaming of Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin, and Brest's consummate skill in combining suspense and humour with well-developed characters. De Niro plays a maverick bounty hunter whose latest assignment is Grodin, an accountant accused of embezzling from the Mob. De Niro thinks he's in for an easy job, transporting Grodin (who's afraid to fly) from New York to Los Angeles, but soon discovers that both the FBI and the Mafia are hot on Grodin's trail. Equal parts road trip, action thriller, and a quirky character study, Midnight Run moves at a breakneck pace but still gives De Niro and Grodin time to create rich, memorable performances as two men who seem to be opposites, but gradually develop mutual respect and admiration. Mainstream entertainment at its best. --Jeff Shannon

Over the course of the weekend Nick takes on the role of the bride's therapist the father's ideal son-in-law the groom's new best friend and the object of every woman's affection. For Kat what starts out as a pretend relationship with Nick begins to turn into something entirely unexpected: a second chance at love. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (Dir. The whimsical comedy-romance Heaven Can Wait is a delightful example of the small sub-genre of afterlife comedies. The film, which teams then lovers Warren Beatty and Julie Christie for a third time following McCabe and Mrs Miller (1971) and Shampoo (1975), is not a remake of the 1943 supernatural film of the same name, but of the Robert Montgomery classic Here Comes Mr Jordan (1941). Here Beatty is American football player Joe Pendleton, who accidentally dies, decades too early, and is incarnated in a new body which, until recently, was occupied by a ruthless multi-millionaire. James Mason is superb as a most authoritative angel (Mr Jordan), heading a fine cast including Charles Grodin, Buck Henry and Jack Warden. In a sub-plot paralleling The Shop Around the Corner (1940) and revisited in You've Got Mail (1998), Julie Christie plays an English woman outraged that one of the former millionaire's companies is destroying her village, while simultaneously falling in love with the man now occupying the hated millionaire's mortal coil. Much comic and romantic misunderstanding follows, as well as some appealing slapstick, courtesy of Dyan Cannon. Aided by a lovely musical score by Dave Grusin, this is a beautifully played and thoroughly charming bittersweet fantasy about the transcendent power of love. It is a joy for romantics everywhere. On the DVD: Heaven Can Wait comes to DVD in a good 1.77:1 ratio transfer which exhibits just a little grain in some darker scenes. The print shows some very minor, occasional damage, but nothing to complain about in a film of this vintage. The sound is the original mono mix, which is perfectly serviceable. The only extra is the theatrical trailer. --Gary S Dalkin
It’s summer term at Abbey Grove and Alfie Wickers (Jack Whitehall) is back however this term is going to be a challenge. Exams are looming and it’s time for Alfie to finally knuckle down and start teaching his class but the path to A*s never did run smooth. The staff room isn’t going to be any easier than the class room. Alfie’s dad Martin Wickers (Harry Enfield) has been appointed as the new deputy head and despite his protestations that their relationship won’t affect the work place his stories of Alfie wetting himself on his 18th Birthday mean it is all beyond cringe for Alfie. Meanwhile things are looking rosy between Alfie and Miss Gulliver (Sarah Solemani) until their relationship is put to the test by a teachers’ strike brought on by Fraser (Mathew Horne) badly investing the school’s money in his own clothing range Dolce and Gabanter. Thrown into the mix is an evening of after school clubs which see Alfie LARPing for the first time a furiously competitive sports day a joyride in an ambulance with school bully Grayson Alfie and his class trying to cheat their way through a Biology exam and the end of term Prom with a shock result for the Prom King and Queen.
Bad Education - written by and starring Jack Whitehall - returns to BBC3 and it’s even bigger and better than the hugely successful first series. Mathew Horne Michelle Gomez and Sarah Solemani reprise their roles in this series. They are joined by brilliant new cast additions including Harry Enfield Samantha Spiro Greg McHugh Frances Barber and Jake Canuso. Also returning are the wonderful young comedy talent in Alfie’s class. It’s a new term and Alfie Wickers (Jack Whitehall) is back as the self-styled maverick of Abbey Grove attempting to teach his class something - anything - that requires zero effort. Though Alfie’s heart’s always in the right place his judgment is often clouded by the fact he is in reality a bigger kid than any of the kids he teaches. Bad Education series two features a swimming gala a drugs awareness day that ends in utter humiliation for Alfie Fraser staging Abbey Grove’s own Take Me Out and Joe being shot in the bum. It may be a new term but it looks like Alfie hasn’t learnt a thing but his pupils still love him...
