A high-velocity home invasion-styled hostage drama on rails, The Incident is a NYC transit suspense film that precedes the better-known The Taking of Pelham One Two Three by seven years. When director Larry Peerce (Goodbye, Columbus) and cinematographer Gerald Hirschfeld (Young Frankenstein) were denied permission to shoot in the NYC subways, they did it anyway, using concealed cameras for some footage, providing a gritty time capsule of the 60s Big Apple as it begins to rot.

  The sun beat down giving a rare reprieve from the rain and wind so typical of Turnberry as if it knew it had a part to play in the historic events about to unfold on the Ailsa course. The final day of the 1977 Open was to become known as The Duel in the Sun” as two of the game's supreme competitors locked horns in one of the most incredible encounters in major championship history. Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus had been engaged in a fierce battle sparring at the head of the leader board. After three rounds they shared the Open lead three strokes ahead of Ben Crenshaw. Behind them Trevino Palmer and Ballesteros toiled. They were paired on the final day having matched scores (68 70 and 65) and talent for three days. After just four holes of the final round Nicklaus had a three shot lead but Watson pulled even by the eighth. At the ninth the crowd could contain their excitement no longer the ropes broke and the fans spilt on to the fairway. Jack Nicklaus again forged ahead taking a two-shot advantage by the 12th. Watson hit back by holing a 12 foot putt on the 13th and followed it with an unlikely and spectacular birdie from nearly 60 feet at the par three 15th. Nicklaus missed his putt for a matching birdie. Watson birdied the 17th and when Nicklaus missed his birdie putt led for the first time all day. Watson found the final fairway and then delivered an approach to within two feet of the pin at the last. It looked as if Nicklaus was beaten — his drive was inches from a bush and he had an impeded swing. But this was Jack golf's greatest and incredibly Nicklaus smashed a recovery shot on to the final green. Still he was 40 feet from the hole — a putt that broke in all manner of directions. Watson whispered to his caddie “Jack is going to make that putt — and of course he did. Watson now had his birdie putt for the famous Claret Jug. He could have wavered — but he did not. The Open winning putt went in centre cup. This updated edition features the Official Film of the legendary 1977 Open Championships at Turnberry and the original live coverage of holes 12 to 18 of the final day.

  In 1990, Death Warrant was one of several back-to-back action movies that suddenly made Jean Claude Van Damme's name a rival to Stallone's and Schwarzenegger's. Its distinction from the likes of Cyborg or Double Impact is in its firm grounding in reality. In fact, Los Angeles County Jail couldn't seem more harshly real. That's where Detective Burke finds himself going undercover to investigate a string of mysterious (and politically embarrassing) deaths. Of course, the prison environment is ideally suited to Van Damme's strengths, where he elicits sympathy as the innocent abroad during one fight sequence after another. Lots of colourful secondary characters are along for the ride, such as the enigmatic Priest, tough-as-nails peanut-shucking Sergeant DeGraf and Burke's arch nemesis, the Candyman (Patrick Kilpatrick). There's an admirable attempt at portraying the action with some panache. Light and shadow is used to good effect and every kickbox move is punctuated by a double cut. Although the script dispenses with the essential Van Damme elements in the opening seconds (he lost a partner / he's from Canada / he can kickbox), this is definitely an above-average Van Damme flick. On the DVD: The bare-bones transfer offers an occasionally grainy picture in 1.85:1 ratio and a three-channel surround soundtrack. The only extra off the static menu is the original theatrical trailer. --Paul Tonks

  The four films presented in The British War Collection unapologetically embody the dogged spirit and pluck of an embattled nation during its greatest crisis; that they also represent the zenith of post-war British cinema is a testament to both their quality and veracity. First in chronological order is The Cruel Sea (1953), a rivetingly faithful adaptation of Nicholas Monsarrat's gripping novel (itself semi-autobiographical) in which Jack Hawkins is the epitome of determined professionalism in the face of ever-present disaster. Moving from sea to air, The Dam Busters (1954) uses the same documentary-style approach to storytelling, though combined here with the more overt patriotic appeal of Eric Coates' famous march theme. A similar never-say-die spirit pervades both The Colditz Story (1955)--an authentic retelling of PR Reid's narrative--and Ice Cold in Alex (1958). Coincidentally or not, both films star the always indomitable John Mills. In Colditz, Mills heads a distinguished ensemble of British thespians as they attempt to escape from the infamous fortress, while in Alex he and his marvellously tight-knit cast journey painstakingly towards what is probably the most famous glass of lager in the world. On the DVDs: The British War Collection comes in a neat fold-out package with postcard-style cards for each movie.
