The Young Stranger | DVD | (30/06/2003)
from £4.24
| Saving you £5.75 (135.61%)
| RRP A story of teenage tearing-away in 1950s America, The Young Stranger fails to make a serious, gripping narrative of the events that follow the somewhat innocuous pivotal moment when 16-year-old Harold "Hal" Ditmar (James MacArthur) punches a cinema manager. Adapted from a TV play and released two years after the benchmark for delinquency movies, Rebel Without a Cause, it has none of that film's raw urgency, seeming staid and inconsequential in comparison. The primary problem is that Hal makes an unconvincing hoodlum. His misdemeanour is less an act of rebellion than a brief misunderstanding. Far from articulating the angst of a generation, his angry tirades against his parents (Kim Hunter and James Daly) and the police set him apart from his peers and feel more like the self-pitying whines of a privileged individual. This sensation is further exacerbated by the fact that all of his problems are swiftly resolved in an all-too-neat ending. Still, The Young Stranger is an interesting period piece, not least for an amusingly tame car chase from first-time feature director John Frankenheimer. --Paul Philpott
Carry On Dick | DVD | (27/08/2001)
from £6.99
| Saving you £3.00 (42.92%)
| RRP The 18th century, with its frills and bawds, was ideal territory for the Carry On movies: Carry On Dick is one of the few of the series where one notices the quality of the art direction in intervals between terrible old Talbot Rothwell jokes and the creaking of standard farce moments. Captain Fancy (Kenneth Williams) is sent to the remote village of Upper Denture to arrest Big Dick Turpin (Sid James) and makes the mistake of confiding in the local Rector, the Reverend Flasher (who is Big Dick's secret alter-ego). Dick has troubles of his own: his liaison with his housemaid and henchperson Harriet (Barbara Windsor) is perpetually interrupted by his amorous housekeeper Hattie Jacques). Meanwhile, Joan Sims struts around the plot as the proprietor of a touring show of scantily clad young women. This is not one of the best of the series--a certain mean-spiritedness creeps in to the humour as does the self-conscious awareness that 1974 was a date a little late for some of the more sexist jokes--but any film with Kenneth Williams discussing satin coats with his tailor has something going for it. On the DVD: Sadly, the DVD has no frills: it is presented in mono and 4:3 screen ratio.--Roz Kaveney

The Pope Of Greenwich Village | DVD | (06/05/2002)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Set among the Italian-American community of Manhattan and adapted by Vincent Patrick from his own novel, 1984's The Pope of Greenwich Village just about gets by on its charm. It stars Mickey Rourke as Charlie, a small-time grafter who is on the point of making his big move and breakaway. Unfortunately, the pull of family ties means that he's hampered by his cousin Paulie (Eric Roberts), an ambitious and excitable idiot who manages to cock up absolutely everything he turns his hand to, bringing down Charlie with him every time. After he gets the pair of them sacked from a restaurant, Paulie helps set up a safecracking deal with older hand Kenneth MacMillan. Trouble is, theyre robbing the local mafia boss. Rourke and Roberts' relationship is modelled closely on that of Harvey Keitel and Robert DeNiro in Scorcese's Mean Streets, only without quite the same harrowing consequences. This being the 1980s there's much De Niro-esque methodology, which generally consists of repeating lines at least twice ("Fix your tie! Fix your tie!"). The element of improv sees the film veer off course occasionally, while Darryl Hannah is her usual oddly semi-detached self in the role of Rourke's girlfriend. However, it's Roberts' performance as the exasperating and energetic Paulie which carries the film, with solid support from numerous Goodfellas and Sopranos regulars. On the DVD: The Pope of Greenwich Village arrives on disc in a decent enough but hardly pristine print. The sole extra is the original trailer, which means the only real benefit of acquiring this on DVD is storage convenience. --David Stubbs

High Plains Drifter | DVD | (26/02/2001)

| RRP Clint Eastwood's second film as a director (and his first Western) is a variation on the "man with no name" theme, starring Eastwood as the drifter known only as "the Stranger". He rides into the desert town of Lagos and is quickly attacked by three gunmen. Recovering with the aid of a local dwarf (a memorable role for Billy Curtis), the Stranger is hired by the intimidated townsfolk to fend off a band of violent ex-convicts. After teaching the citizens self-defence and instructing them to paint the entire town red and rename it "Hell", the Stranger vanishes. He reappears when the marauding criminals arrive, and delivers justice and teaches the townsfolk a harsh lesson about moral obligation. Is he a figure from their past or a kind of supernatural avenger? Combining humour with action, High Plains Drifter is both a serious and tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Westerns that made Eastwood a household name. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Live In Concert - DeJohnette, Hancock, Holland, Metheny | DVD | (20/04/2001)
from £25.90
| Saving you £-5.91 (-29.60%)
| RRP Live in Concert is a feature-length (98 minutes) release edited from two concerts given by the jazz superstar line-up of Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland and Pat Metheny at the Mellon Jazz festival, Academy of Music, Philadelphia on June 23, 1990. This was part of an outstanding world tour following up drummer DeJohnette's Parallel Realities album, though this programme and the original album only have two cuts in common, "Indigo Dreamscapes" and "Nine Over Reggae". Hancock (piano and keyboards) and Metheny (guitar) were both on Parallel Realities but here contribute material from their own back catalogue: Hancock a barnstorming 15-minute "Hurricane" and the closing "Cantaloupe Island", Metheny offering the appropriately nocturnal and reflective "The Bat". Bassist Dave Holland, who was the guest on the tour, introduces the sequence with the longest cut, "Shadow Dance". Here are four of the world's finest modern jazz artists at the top of their game; virtuoso playing certainly, but also impeccable taste and artistry, seamless interaction and inspired music-making. When combined with a transparent, gimmick-free visual style, which simply shows the musicians playing, concentrating on whoever is soloing to offer the best seat in the house, the result is an uplifting, exhilarating example of how well jazz can be presented on DVD. On the DVD: there are no special features other than a trailer for two classical DVDs, and as such the disc starts playing automatically, allowing it to be used like a particularly long live album without even turning the TV on. Unusually for 1990 the concert was shot at 16:9 and is presented anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs, though nothing can disguise the relative softness of live video shot under concert lighting, nor the occasional after-images left by the lighting. The stereo sound is absolutely first-rate, and that's what really counts.--Gary S. Dalkin
