  • The World Of Drunken Master [2001]The World Of Drunken Master | DVD | (25/07/2005) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Made in 1979 The World of Drunken Master appeared at the same time as Drunken Master Part 2, and is an unofficial prequel to Jackie Chan's Drunken Master (1978). As the titular character, Siu Tien Yuen appeared in all three films, though here his role is reduced to a 10-minute cameo and the bulk of the film is a flashback to 30 years earlier. The story unfolds as Jack and Mark Long play a pair of petty thieves who team-up, learn kung fu and fall in love with the daughter (Jeanie Chang) of the owner of a local distillery. Naturally there is a gang of villains who want to close the business down and steal the land, so that the second half of the movie is one long series of fight scenes. Clearly made on a very low budget, the action is nevertheless inventively choreographed and well filmed. Siu Tien Yuen doesn't have much to do, though the framing device and the passage of time to when the old friends meet again lends a poignancy and sense of loss unusual in kung fu movies. The star would reprise the character at greater length in Magnificent Butcher (again, 1979), while Jackie Chan finally delivered his own Drunken Master II in 1994. The title on this print is actually Drunken Dragon. On the DVD: the original 2.35:1 ratio film is presented here at standard TV 4:3, with often little evidence even of any panning and scanning so that the images look badly composed and lack important information throughout. The credits have been simply squashed to 4:3 so that everything looks tall and thin. Worse, the encoding is riddled with compression artefacts and the eye-aching out-of-focus, grainy, washed-out transfer shows clear evidence of originating with a poor quality video than the original film. There is no original soundtrack option, only a dreadful American dub. The sound is mediocre mono. Apart from various language subtitles the only extra is the original theatrical trailer. This is presented anamorphically enhanced, but the picture quality is still very poor and the image has been squashed from 2.35:1 to 1.77:1. The listed trailers for other MIA titles are missing from the disc, which astonishingly claims to be a "Special Edition". The cover blurb even manages to confuse the plot with that of an entirely different film, the same director's The Mystery of Chess Boxing (1979). --Gary S Dalkin

  • Night And The City [1992]Night And The City | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Producer-turned-director Irwin Winkler crafted this 1992 remake of Jules Dassin's 1950 film noir Night and the City, the tale of a small-time hustler in London who gets in over his head. Winkler's version is set in New York and stars Robert De Niro as a shyster lawyer who decides to get even with a boxing promoter (Alan King) who bests him in court. A couple of innocents are talked into helping the cause, notably the brother (Jack Warden) of De Niro's enemy and a barmaid (Jessica Lange) who agrees to finance the operation. Everything goes south, plunging the hero into prospects of real disaster. The film is far from an exemplary, contemporary noir, but its outstanding cast, with no shortage of charisma and dynamics, keeps things terribly interesting. So does the funny but terse script by Richard Price (Clockers), who also has a cameo as a doctor. Winkler's sensibilities as a tasteful and intelligent producer still get in the way of his daring as a director, but he does leave us with much to be satisfied about.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

  • Shampoo [1975]Shampoo | DVD | (13/01/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Shampoo was billed as a sex comedy when it was first released in 1975, cashing in on the priapic reputation of its leading man and producer Warren Beatty. More than a quarter of a century on, that tag looks somewhat inadequate. Against a background of aimless bed-hopping and power-broking, Shampoo satirises the cultural and political wasteland of late-1960s Beverley Hills society. Ladies who lunch are married to ambitious, unfaithful husbands with mistresses; their daughters are dysfunctional; and the mistresses spend more time with their dogs than their lovers. George, the philandering hairdresser, is the common denominator who services them all. But he has private ambitions and is hustling for investment in his own salon. Beatty's restless performance as the man who can't say "no" is intriguing, waking up suddenly and too late to the chaos and vapidity of his life. The humour is bleak, sharpened by the background of Nixon's ascent to the White House: Shampoo is a cynical by-product of the Watergate scandal. There are good performances from Julie Christie and Goldie Hawn as two of George's leading conquests, and from a pre-Star Wars Carrie Fisher as the teenager who tries to seduce him. But Lee Grant garnered the awards as the embittered wife who finally calls "time". On the DVD: Shampoo is presented in 1:85.1 anamorphic widescreen, replicating the glossy production values of the original theatrical experience. The mono Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is well balanced. There are no extras apart from standard subtitles. --Piers Ford
