  In 1959 screenwriter Rod Serling first opened the door to the "dimension of imagination" that is The Twilight Zone, a show quite unlike anything that had gone before, and better than much that has followed in its wake. This original and daring television series ran for a magnificent five seasons from 1959 to 1964 and still looks as fresh as ever, particularly on DVD. What distinguished the series (and still does) is the quality of the scripts, many of which were penned by Serling, but with significant contributions from veteran sci-fi authors and screenwriters such as Richard Matheson. Actors of the calibre of Robert Redford, Burgess Meredith, Lee Marvin and William Shatner gave some of their best small-screen performances, while an unforgettable main title theme by Bernard Herrmann and musical contributions from young turks such as Jerry Goldsmith underlined the show's attraction for great creative talent both behind and in front of the cameras.   With Punk now the stuff of postcards, its good to have Punk in London, a 1977 feature that taps the source of what the scene was all about. German director Wolfgang Büra interviews a number of players and promoters but, apart from concert sequences by The Adverts and The Clash--in gritty form on their ill-fated first European tour--the emphasis is on "almost were" bands. Büras reticent and awkward questioning wont win awards for journalism, but interviewees are prepared to open up to him. Theres political hard-talking from members of Chelsea, a chat with the unassuming bassist of The Lurkers (and parents!), priceless interview footage with Kevin Rowland, then in Birmingham band The Kiljoys; best of all, the laconic roadie of Subway Sect, a true leveller well aware that the whole "Punk thing" will fall victim to commercial pressure like counter-cultures before it. On the DVD: The 1977 film reproduces decently, its faded realism appropriate to the subject, and the sound captures the sweaty environs of Londons club scene with raw immediacy. A pity, though, that sound and vision in the interviews werent better synchronised. There are 21 access points; The Clash sequence is repeated with German subtitles (though markedly inferior picture quality), and an extended adverts sequence with German-only offstage banter. Overall, a quirky package, and a quirky documentary--but with a sincerity and authenticity that no "Best of" could ever hope to capture.--Richard Whitehouse

The film's still as fresh, frightening and funny as it was when first released in 1939. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film.   Classic Kung Fu fare from the Hong Kong school directed by the old master himself, Joseph Kuo, Born Invincible has only been available in an extremely crackly print for years. Fortunately this version has been cleaned up, though lovers of Oriental kitsch will be glad to hear that the risible, excruciating dubbing remains intact. The plot revolves around the evil Ching Ying (Carter Wong), who has trained since the age of three in the near-impossible art of Tai Chi Kung Fu. His body has become tantamount to a single, deadly muscle, the 108 pressure points of human vulnerability reduced to just one--his sole weakness. His training has also left him with whitened hair and a voice that, dubbed, is a little too close to Harry Enfield's Grayson character from the Mr Cholmondley-Warner sketches in high excitement. Having killed two elders of the Lei Ping school in martial combat over an old score, it falls to the students of that establishment to avenge their masters, through three rigorous years of training. The awesome, though often-comical fight scenes (which in no way resemble Tai Chi) dominate the movie, involving as they do protracted acrobatic manoeuvres, few of which seem to involve actual contact with the human body. Still, lovers of The Matrix might care to revisit this, in order to check out how those moves were first committed to celluloid when editing was less of a fine art. --David Stubbs
