Michael Apted made his feature-film debut with this distinctive drama based on the novella of the same name by H E Bates. Reuniting Glenda Jackson with her Women in Love co-star Oliver Reed, the film also stars a young Brian Deacon (Vampyres, A Zed & Two Noughts). When a young soldier (Deacon) deserts his outfit and hides in a remote farm, the farm owner (Jackson) and he fall in love. But their idyll is shattered by the arrival of a boorish, violent army sergeant (Reed) searching for his AWOL recruit. Unconventional and superbly played, The Triple Echo is one of the finest British films of the 1970s. Long overlooked and unjustly neglected, this powerful drama is now ripe for rediscovery, and is presented in a brand new 2K restoration from the film's newly rediscovered original negative. Home cinema was practically invented for Die Hard movies. The first film in particular remains an unbeatable action classic, a mixture of taut situations, Bruce Willis in excellent form as John McClane, and some outstanding directorial work from John McTiernan. The sequels? Well, everyone has their favourite. Take your pick from Dulles International Airport being taken over by terrorists at Christmas, Willis and Samuel L Jackson joining forces to tear through New York City, or computer hackers looking to bring things to a standstill. It’s four films, rammed full of action, and unashamedly so. The main reason for upgrading the films to Blu-ray, in this case, is to see what’s been done with the physical presentation of them. The news here is good: the Die Hard Quadrilogy sparkles in high definition, with razor sharp imagery, and fast moving action flashing before your eyes. And then there’s the sound mix, a workout for whatever scale of speaker setup that you have. The deal is then sweetened by the inclusion of a varied collection of behind the scenes material for each of the films, with some of the archive pieces in particular being of real interest. Yet ultimately, it’s the four films, in tip-top condition, that make the Die Hard Quadrilogy a Blu-ray must-have. Top quality action, fabulous set pieces and excellent presentation: it’s a set not to be missed.

Buster Keaton Rides Again - In the autumn of 1964, just over a year before his death, Buster Keaton travelled to Canada to make The Railrodder, a silent short that would turn out to be one of his final films. Documenting this mobile production in fascinating and unexpected detail, Buster Keaton Rides Again offers a rare glimpse of the comedy legend's temperament, philosophies, hobbies, marriage (his third), and occasionally combative creative process. Canadian International Pictures fondly presents this intimate look at one of cinema's most enduring legends. In addition, this disc includes The Railrodder and six other shorts by director and Buster Keaton Rides Again co-star Gerald Potterton (The Rainbow Boys, Heavy Metal). Helicopter Canada - Made in celebration of the Canadian centennial, this Oscar-nominated documentary offers a stunning aerial exploration of the country's vast and varied landscape. Featuring impressive widescreen cinematography by director Eugene Boyko, amusingly irreverent commentary, and even a cameo by The Beatles, this enchantingly oddball time capsule brings Canadiana to new heights. In honour of the film's debt to the sprawling Cinerama travelogues of the '50s, this disc also includes a presentation of Helicopter Canada in the Smilebox format, simulating the effect of a curved screen. • Jackie Chan's First Strike [1997]Jackie Chan's First Strike | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £7.76   |  Saving you £9.49 (146.00%)   |  RRP £15.99

Action-god Jackie Chan does his best James Bond impression with First Strike, an ecstatic sequel to the classic Supercop. The bare-bones plot has Chan in pursuit of international terrorists, but the narrative quickly gives way to an unceasing barrage of insane stunt work (including a nitro-fuelled ski chase and a grandiose fight scene set inside a functioning shark tank). As with most of the ageing star's recent films, there is more of an emphasis placed on big, impersonal (albeit impressive) stunts rather than the close-up combat that made him famous; but the end result is still a must-see rush for longtime fans and a great introduction for newcomers eager to see what all the well-deserved fuss is about. The scene where Jackie takes on multiple goons while armed only with a ladder is one of his most jaw-dropping set pieces ever--and that's saying quite a lot. Be sure to stick around for the closing credits of gags gone awry, which graphically prove that Chan is truly the hardest working man in show business. --Andrew Wright

It's goodbye to Capeside, hello to Boston in Dawson's Creek's fifth season (a.k.a.: Dawson's Creek: The College Years). While the end of the fourth season sent the five friends their separate ways--Dawson (James Van Der Beek) to USC Film School, Joey (Katie Holmes) to Wilmington College, Jen (Michelle Williams) and Jack (Kerr Smith) to Boston Bay College; and Pacey (Joshua Jackson) to the high seas--it doesn't take them long to find themselves together again. That's a good thing, especially when tragedy strikes a family member and threatens to tear the survivors apart. More than anything, the fifth season seems to be about falling into bad relationships. Jen dates a cute but sleazy musician (Chad Michael Murray), Pacey gets a job in a restaurant where he pursues a woman (Lourdes Benedicto) already having an affair with a married man, then fends off a vampish new boss (Sherilyn Fenn, Twin Peaks). Joey is drawn to her handsome English professor (Ken Marino). And Jack joins a frat, becomes a jerk, and starts a devoted relationship with his beer bottle. Dawson meets an eccentric young filmmaker (Jordan Bridges) which in turn leads to a meeting with his favorite Boston film critic (Meredith Salenger). And Joey's new roommate, the annoyance-with-a-heart-of-gold Audrey (Busy Phillipps), becomes the newest major addition to the cast. The irritation factor is high this season, a couple of "Joey is threatened" interludes don't have the punch that they could have, and in the season finale, the inevitable resolution of the show's central relationship doesn't really resolve anything at all. But viewers who have followed the Capeside crew for four seasons will still want to see what happens in the fifth. The fifth season is the first to have no DVD extras at all, and it continues the music-replacement strategy (which, since the second season has replaced much of the music, and since the third season has replaced Paula Cole's theme song, all due to licensing expenses). In addition to the usual background-music switches, some scenes have been edited (for example, the episode "Highway to Hell" has cut two of the performances on-stage at the Drunk & Dead). Also, the opening credits of "The Long Goodbye" and "Downtown Crossing" had originally used instrumental versions of "I Don't Want to Wait," which had underscored the emotion of those episodes. In the DVD set, those have been replaced by the standard version and an instrumental version, respectively, of "Run Like Mad." --David Horiuchi, Amazon.com
