Monsieur Hulot continues his battle with the modern world. He also pours his affection on to his nephew of which fact his parents don't seem to appreciate.
Hilarious expose of the modern obsession with speed and efficiency set in the rural surroundings of a French village where Francoise the postman tries to improve his round. The visual comedy invention and above all timing is superb. The evocation of rural France really does seem as if from another century....
The Jacques Tati Collection (5 Discs)
Regarded by many as Jacques Tati's masterpiece Playtime is a surreal comic vision of mankind's battle against the overwhelming depersonalisation of modern life.
ITV's seminal arts programme, Tempo ran for eight years through a decade which saw a creative explosion within all aspects of the performing arts. Its fluid style of presentation allowed an almost open-ended remit, enabling it to cover subjects as diverse as cinema, music, dance, photography, writing - and much more besides. At a time when television was being criticised for dumbing down, Tempo - more than any other series - showed that ITV could indeed go highbrow whilst still remaining populist - a philosophy and outlook that was to continue into the 1970s and beyond with its successors Aquarius and The South Bank Show.Unseen for decades, this two-disc set contains interviews, reportage and features on Jacques Tati, Stan Tracey, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Lee Strasberg, Tom Jones, Orson Welles, Harold Pinter, Charles Eames, Jean Luc-Godard and more.

The film that brought Jacques Tati international acclaim also launched his on-screen alter ego: the courteous well-meaning eternally accident prone Monsieur Hulot with whom Tati would from now on be inseparably associated. As with Jour de f''te the film is set in a sleepy French coastal resort which is seasonally disrupted by holidaymakers in energetic pursuit of fun. At the centre of the chaos is the eccentric Hulot struggling at all times to maintain appearances but somehow entirely divorced from his immediate surroundings. There is little plot in Tati's beautifully orchestrated 'ballet' of comic action: it's a series of incidents a seamless succession of gently mocking studies of human absurdity.

Regarded by many as Jacques Tati's masterpiece Playtime is a surreal comic vision of mankind's battle against the overwhelming depersonalisation of modern life. Tati stars as the hapless Hulot who ambles through the massive metropolis specially constructed for the film - one of the most ambitious and imaginative film sets ever to grace the screen. The film is a multi-layered symphony of sight and sound gags. Jokes unfold in various parts of the frame simultaneously and the soundtrack - a meticulously composed cacophony of footsteps gibberish and lounge music - only adds to the absurdity.
