  An evil gang takes over an amusement park only to be foiled by three Ninja-trained brothers and a TV action star in 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain, a smartly-paced, if by-the-numbers, kiddie action flick. Medusa (Loni Anderson) and Lothar (Jim Varney) head up the gang with ransom money and mayhem on their minds. But they don't count on the young trio, taught by their Asian grandfather, and Dave Dragon (Hulk Hogan), making a live appearance at the park. What follows is campy humour, lots of Karate-style action and plenty of Home Alone-type boy vs foolish bad-guy high jinks. And girls aren't left out: the brothers' neighbour, a brainy techno girl, is on hand to hack into the computer and override the gang's murderous plans, while also providing 007-style gadgets for hand-to-hand combat. While there is plenty of gunplay in the 90-minute film, no one is killed or even significantly hurt, making it appropriate for ages five and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs, Amazon.com

The situation brews to a head when a sneak collector Conan (Masterson) discovers a large collection of perfectly-preserved classic comics leading the two shops to vie to acquire them along with a ""villain"" (Elwes) who hopes to steal them first!

The provocative "what if?" scenario still packs a punch, even if it is not always believable. James Brolin, Sam Waterston and O J Simpson star as three astronauts who agree to spare the government embarrassment by faking their historic landing on Mars after their spacecraft is determined to be unsafe for blastoff. When a scheming mission controller (Hal Holbrook) plots to kill the astronauts in a staged capsule fire, the trio embarks on a dangerous mission to expose the truth. Elliott Gould costars as the journalist determined to crack the conspiracy, and director Peter Hyams turns up the tension with an exciting chase sequence involving Telly Savalas as an eccentric barnstormer who comes to Gould's aid in his attempt rescue the hoax mission's sole survivor. --Jeff Shannon

  The Disney touch is all over this grand, colourful version of the Johann Wyss adventure of a European family setting off for the new world of New Guinea. The film opens on a ship jostled and torn by a raging storm while a family struggles to make it through alive. Tossed into a reef near a deserted tropical island, father John Mills takes charge and the family soon turns their island prison into a veritable paradise. Their multi-level tree house, built in record time, is complete with running water and a working pipe organ scavenged from the ship, while their grand yard is abloom in English roses. As a tale of hardship and pioneer pluck it's pure fantasy, but as entertainment it's energetic and appealing. The island is impossibly populated by ostriches, zebras, lions and elephants, a private zoo that delights the youngest boy and offers plenty of comic relief. The two older brothers discover even wilder life when they rescue the prisoner of oriental pirates (led by hard-bitten Sessue Hayakawa). There's little real danger anywhere in the film: even the climactic battle with the pirates is a cartoonish affair, with coconut bombs and non-lethal booby traps, until the final desperate, deadly moments. Hardly a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a lush, beautifully shot film and an entertaining adventure safe for all ages. Dorothy McGuire co-stars as the proper, worry-prone mother. --Sean Axmaker

  Contemporary jazz, smooth jazz, jazz lite: call it what you will, Casino Lights 99 will fulfil any taste you may have for that kind of funky, groove-oriented instrumental music (with a couple of vocals thrown in for good measure). Filmed at Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival in 1999, the concert (also available on CD) features some of the genre's best players, like pianist Bob James and guitarist Larry Carlton, both of whom appear with their own bands, backing other musicians, and with their group Fourplay. Also on hand are keyboardist George Duke, saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Boney James, Kirk Whalum, and Mark Turner, and trumpeter Rick Braun. The performances are all good; these fellows can play, and singers Kevin Mahogany and Gabriela Anders are no slouches either. The problem lies in the material. Aside from Miles Davis's "Four" (played by Fourplay), the standard "Old Folks" (Turner), and a couple of others, most of what passes for tunes is little more than riff-heavy, melody-free jamming--and that includes two hoary classics, Eddie Harris's "Cold Duck Time" (played here by Carlton) and Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" (the closing number, played by just about everybody). The simple truth is that listening to (and watching) some guy get down with his funky horn again and again gets old over the course of two hours. Blystone 1937): Ex-prize-fighter Johnny Cave (Cagney) Is knocked into the position of chief deputy of weights and measures after the current chief is hospitalized by an apparent assassination attempt. After only minutes on the job Cave goes several rounds with a ring of light-weight chiselers who have mastered the art of defrauding shoppers. Cave's aggressive political tactics make him the next likely target on the underworld's hit list. The Lucky Texan (Dir. Robert Bradbury 1934): John Wayne and his sidekick 'Gabby"" Hayes are gold miners who strike it rich. Unfortunately before they can enjoy the fruits of their labor they are wrongfully accused of robbery and murder. As always the road to the truth is never a straight path. Vengeance Valley (Dir. Richard Thorpe 1951): For his entire life Owen has been covering up for his good-for-nothing brother Lee protecting the rascal from their father's wrath. Finally however Lee's shenanigans go too far. After getting a young woman pregnant Lee shifts the blame to Owen. Lee even encourages the girl's brothers to get revenge hoping that with Owen out of the picture he'll become the sole heir to their father's farm. That's as much as any man can take...and Owen decides that it's time to settle the score. The Big Trees (Dir. Felix Feist 1952): A peaceful Quaker colony is thrown into turmoil by the arrival of a fast-talking lumber man. A new law will enable his company to harvest millions of dollars from the majestic redwood forests if the locals will let him. The community refuses to see their beloved sequoias wiped out and pleads with the greedy businessman to halt the destruction. As their clash of ideas rages on an even greater threat to the trees emerges. The Man From Utah (Dir. Robert N. Bradbury 1934): This John Wayne classic brings us to the rodeo. John Weston ('the Duke') has to deal with the corrupt patron who has killed some of the rodeo's performers and who fixes the competition to guarantee Weston to lose. Gangster Story (Dir. Walter Matthau 1960): Matthau plays mob leader Jack Martin whose girlfriend Carol (Grace) is desperate for him to give up his unlawful and dishonest lifestyle. The problem is Jack doesn't have the same yearning to turn his back on his shady past but the crunch comes when he persuades the bank manager to lease him an office in the building and promptly robs the bank! With events turning very nasty is there any point in Carol trying to save her man from himself when all the signs indicate that he's hell bent on a course to self-destruction. Beat The Devil (Dir. John Huston 1953): a wacky comedy that's played as straight as any film noir and is even funnier as a result. Five men (Bogart Lorre Morley Barnard and Tulli) are out to garner control over East African land which they believe contains a rich uranium ore lode. Billy Dannreuther (Bogart) is married to Maria (Gina Lollobrigida) the other four are their ""business associates"" and Jones and Underdown are added to the mix for some interesting diversification. As the boat leaves from Italy to Africa a hodge-podge of amusingly silly adventures begins. British Intelligence (Dir. William Nigh 1940): They say that Karloff preferred character parts and in British Intelligence he's Valdar a sabrescarred butler who might be a secret agent.
