Long-awaited long-overdue: The Professionals as you have never seen them before. Bodie and Doyle need little by way of introduction but if the series had at all escaped you since its debut in 1977 their boss George Cowley head of CI5 couldn't put it more succinctly than his opening gambit: anarchy acts of terror crimes against the public. To combat it I've got special men – experts from the army the police from every service. These are The Professionals. Featuring the perfect ensemble cast of Martin Shaw Gordon Jackson (completely against type here) and the much-missed Lewis Collins the series ran for 57 action-packed episodes and made an immediate impact on British and then international audiences which has sustained 35 years. But the series has never looked this good. Painstakingly restored from the camera-original negatives the series could have been made yesterday. No matter how many times you have seen The Professionals this is a new experience like seeing it for the first time. Features: Brand-new High Definition restorations of all 13 episodes in series three from the camera-original negatives. Brand-new 5.1 tracks from original sound elements. Remastered original as-broadcast mono tracks. Remastered music-only tracks featuring Laurie Johnson's original scores. HD photo galleries featuring hundreds of rare and previously unseen images. All episodes are presented in their original production order. PDF material featuring scripts and memorabilia. English HOH subtitles

  • Jude [1996]Jude | DVD | (01/01/2001) from £8.75   |  Saving you £1.24 (14.17%)   |  RRP £9.99

This curiously dry adaptation of Thomas Hardy's last novel, Jude is a good example of Michael Winterbottom's inability to make a particularly good film until Welcome to Sarajevo. Christopher Eccleston plays Jude Fawley, a self-educated stonemason who holds the dream of attending university but identifies with the working class. Kate Winslet is enlisted to play his cousin Sue Bridehead, a young woman with suffragette leanings and a position as a teacher's assistant. When the two enter into an illicit union, they are condemned to the margins of society, ultimately resulting in a horrifying tragedy. Winterbottom takes an oddly lean approach to Hardy's deterministic story, which leaves a viewer feeling short on emotion just when one needs it for the from-bad-to-worse third act. Welcome to Sarajevo proved that Winterbottom needs a whole other level of personal involvement to make a film that inspires him. Jude isn't one of those lucky films. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

  • Top Gear - Back in the Fast Lane - The Best of Series One and TwoTop Gear - Back in the Fast Lane - The Best of Series One and Two | DVD | (27/10/2003) from £4.89   |  Saving you £11.10 (226.99%)   |  RRP £15.99

Having ceased to take itself seriously, Top Gear has now become the definitive weekly fantasy fix for petrol-heads everywhere. This compilation from the first and second series of the revamped show is mainly a chunk of four-wheeled fun that descends, more than occasionally, into downright silliness. Who would have it any other way? Unusually though, the cars are very nearly upstaged by the string of surprisingly good celebs who are wheeled on to fill the guest slot. We get Jay Kay, Harry Enfield, Jodie Kidd, Anne Robinson and many other luminaries. Several make genuinely funny contributions to the show, such as Jamie Oliver (who sends himself up something rotten while trying to prepare a salad in the back of a VW camper van as it careers around a test track), Patrick Stewart (Clarkson: "You're the most famous guest we've had on". Stewart: "This must be a terrible show, then.") and Boris Johnson, who admits to once having used a mobile phone while riding a bicycle. In the midst of all this, the programme still somehow gets around to beating seven colours of brake fluid out of assorted Jags, Lambos, Astons and so on. There are some show-stealing stunts-cum-sight gags, too, such as the reversal of Eddie Kidd's classic bus-jumping bike stunt that sees a bus being "jumped" over the same number of bikes. Buses, of course, stay in the air the way bricks don't. The caravan-towing speed record attempt is almost serious, except Hammond checks the small print and sees there's no restriction on what you can use to move the caravan. He chooses gravity and drops it from a crane. On the DVD: The Best of Top Gear also includes a fact file that gives the spec of each vehicle and a rather unexciting photo gallery. --Roger Thomas

As the name suggests Top Gear: Best Of British is a celebration of all manifestations of Finnish folk dancing from the haunting raisikipi and the delicate kestipilla to the bewitching majesty of the runkiapunkipilliapu in all its many forms. Not really. Best Of British is actually a look back at some of Top Gear's finest encounters with the very best of British cars. And sometimes the very worst. Within this lavishly crafted plastic box you will find Bentleys Morgans Rolls-Royces Lotuses and the glorious Jensen Interceptor. On a slightly less glamorous note there's also the British Leyland Challenge in which Jeremy Richard and James try to prove that the strike-prone 1970s behemoth actually made one or two good cars. And when you've had your fill of rust and despair you can move on to the presenters' flag-waving celebration of all that is great about car-building in Blighty ending with a spectacular tear-jerking line-up of British-made metal on The Mall. This DVD is best watched whilst wearing Union Jack underpants.

  • Terminal Velocity [1995]Terminal Velocity | DVD | (12/02/2001) from £18.25   |  Saving you £-3.26 (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

While investigating the mysterious circumstances of a beautiful student's demise, a maverick skydiving instructor finds himself entangled in a murderous conspiracy involving Soviet spies and a lost shipment of gold. Logical it ain't, but this entertainingly daft thriller does offer some good-natured satiric riffs on standard action star conventions. Charlie Sheen (throughout most of the film, this not-especially-heroic hero displays the approximate intelligence of a bag of doorknobs) stars along with Nastassja Kinski in a welcome return after a long absence from the screen. Terminal Velocity is good fun for adrenaline junkies, with a boffo climax involving a midair escape attempt from a free-falling convertible. Writer David Twohy went on to direct Sheen in the considerably more accomplished The Arrival. --Andrew Wright

  • Mr Smith Goes To Washington [1939]Mr Smith Goes To Washington | DVD | (26/02/2001) from £8.90   |  Saving you £11.09 (124.61%)   |  RRP £19.99

In Frank Capra's bright, funny and beautifully paced satire Mr Smith Goes to Washington political heavyweights decide that Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), an obscure scoutmaster in a small town, would be the perfect dupe to fill a vacant US Senate chair. Surely this naïve bumpkin can be easily controlled by the senior senator (Claude Rains) from his state, a respectable yet corrupted career politician. Capra fills the film with Smith's wide-eyed wonder at the glories of Washington, all of which ring false for his cynical secretary (Jean Arthur) who doesn't believe for a minute this rube could be for real. But he is. Capra was repeating the formula of a previous film, Mr Deeds Goes to Town, but this one is even sharper. Stewart and Arthur are brilliant, and the former cowboy-star Harry Carey lends a warm presence to the role of the vice-president. Mr Smith Goes to Washington is Capra's ode to the power of innocence--an idea so potent that present-day audiences may find themselves wishing for a new Mr Smith in the halls of power. The 1939 US Congress was none too thrilled about the film's depiction of their august body, denouncing it as a caricature; but even today, Capra's jibes about vested interests and political machines look as accurate as ever. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com

Audrey Hepburn plays a Parisienne whose husband is murdered and who finds she is being followed by four men seeking the fortune her late spouse had hidden away. Cary Grant is the stranger who comes to her aid but his real motives aren't entirely clear--could he even be the killer? The 1963 film is directed by Stanley Donen but it has been called "Hitchcockian" for good reason: the possible duplicities between lovers, the unspoken agendas between a man and woman sharing secrets. Charade is nowhere as significant as a Hitchcock film but suspense-wise it holds its own; and Donen's glossy production lends itself to the welcome experience of stargazing. One wants Cary Grant to be Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn to be no one but Audrey Hepburn in a Hollywood product such as this, and they certainly don't let us down.--Tom Keogh
