Arguably the archetypal Gothic thriller The Dark Angel is a sensual and stylish adaptation of Uncle Silas - Sheridan le Fanu's influential Victorian literary masterpiece. Starring Peter O'Toole in a wonderfully rich performance as the dangerous scheming and perhaps quite mad Silas Ruthyn this three-part drama is elegantly directed by cult favourite Peter Hammond (Sherlock Holmes The Avengers) and also features Beatie Edney as the unfortunate Maud Jane Lapotaire as the grotesquely sinsiter Madame de la Rougierre Tim Woodward as the brutal Dudley and Hammer Horror doyenne Barbara Shelley in her final dramatic television role. Sparkling with corrupted elegance its dark brooding atmosphere makes The Dark Angel the definitive adaptation of this literary classic. When her father unexpectedly dies young Maud Ruthyn becomes heiress to a large fortune that is held in trust for her until she comes of age. Romantically obsessed by a youthful Byronic painting of her Uncle Silas she readily agrees to being placed in his care - ignoring warnings of his behaviour as a known rake wastrel and opium fiend. Unfortunately for Maud things are not what they seem and Silas's benevolent demeanour hides a web of deception and terror.

Jim Henson's fantasy epic The Dark Crystal doesn't take place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but like Star Wars it takes the audience to a place that exists only in the imagination and, for an hour and a half, on the screen. Recalling the worlds of JRR. Tolkien, Henson tells the story of a race of grotesque birdlike lizards called the Skeksis, gnomish dragons who rule their fantastic planet with an iron claw. A prophecy tells of a Gelfling (a small elfin being) who will topple their empire, so in their reign of terror they have exterminated the race, or so they think. The orphan Jen, raised in solitude by a race of peace-loving wizards called the Mystics, embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of the Dark Crystal (which gives the Skeksis their power) and restore the balance of the universe. Henson and codirector Frank Oz have pushed puppetry into a new direction: traditional puppets, marionettes, giant bodysuits, and mechanical constructions are mixed seamlessly in a fantasy world of towering castles, simple huts, dank caves, a giant clockwork observatory, and a magnificent landscape that seem to have leaped off the pages of a storybook. Muppet fans will recognise many of the voice actors--a few characters sound awfully close to familiar comic creations--but otherwise The Dark Crystal is a completely alien world made familiar by a mythic quest that resonates through stories over the ages. --Sean Axmaker

  • The Three Stooges [DVD]The Three Stooges | DVD | (11/02/2013) from £7.00   |  Saving you £12.99 (185.57%)   |  RRP £19.99

Though it's a reboot of a classic slapstick series, The Three Stooges fits right into Peter and Bobby Farrelly's filmography. Throughout their comedies, especially Dumb and Dumber, they've always championed the clueless and clumsy, and that describes this trio perfectly: Moe, Larry, and Curly (Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes, and Will Sasso, taking over from Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, and Jim Carrey). In the prologue or first "episode" (two more will follow), an unseen character drops three babies off at a Catholic orphanage. At first, the nuns (Jane Lynch, Jennifer Hudson, and Larry David--yes, Larry David) take delight in the spirited infants with the strange hairstyles, but 10 years later, their antics have worn thin. A well-heeled couple (Stephen Collins and Carly Craig) considers adoption, but things don't work out, so 25 more years pass, during which they become the orphanage's bumbling handymen, which necessitates further head-bonks, nyuk-nyuk-nyuks, and woo-woo-woos. When the threat of closure comes to the only home they've ever known, the boys set out to save the day. This leads them to a wealthy woman (Sofía Vergara), her lover (Craig Bierko), and her father-in-law (Collins), encounters that bring them to the attention of MTV's Jersey Shore, which provides a solution to their dilemma. The Farrellys may have their hearts in the right place, but The Three Stooges ranks as their weakest effort to date. The cast does what they can, but the script is terminally unfunny, and the frenetic direction only drives the point home. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
