  Joss Beaumont (Jean-Paul Belmondo) is a French spy given the assignment of killing an African dictator and when he arrives in Africa to do so he is captured and put in prison. The political winds had changed - the dictator is now an ally - and the best way to handle the agent is to keep him in jail. Naturally at odds now with his former bosses and with an ax to grind for his own incarceration the agent escapes after two years in prison and heads back to Paris where he announces that he is going to finish his assassination job during the coming diplomatic visit of the African leader. Once aware of his intent the French government sets up one trap after another but to no avail - the agent remains free and there is no doubt that he has the full capacity to do exactly what he says.

Stavisky (brilliantly portrayed by Belmondo) built an empire through a combination of subterfuge fraud and false identity becoming as the more respectably titled Serge Alexandre one of the most influential and powerful men in France in the period between the wars. As the investigations of Inspector Bonny (Claude Rich) reveal Stavisky's life was the perfect sham which took in businessmen financiers and politicians of all persuasions. Eschewing a straight historical biopic Resnair and writer Jorge Semprn (Z) restrict the scope of the film to the last few months of Stavisky's eventful life covering his spectacular fall from grace. A work of rare technical brilliance in which the period detail is impeccable Stavisky's score is courtesy of Stephen Sondheim.

However fed up with her constant pleading Emile finally suggests that she shack up with his best friend Alfred (Jean-Paul Belmondo) and much to Emile's dismay she eventually takes his advice. Godard's second feature employs jump cuts and jarring sound mixing--most notably during Karina's strip-tease performances. Godard is at his most affectionate and good-natured here. He also makes several cinematic in-jokes including one in which Belmondo's character mentions that he wants to hurry home to watch A BOUT DE SOUFFLE the film that turned Belmondo into a megastar just one year before. Featuring a magnetically cute performance from Karina who soon after the film became Godard's wife this loving romantic comedy is a dazzler.LE PETIT SOLDAT (1960):Michel Subor stars as Bruno a hitman under contract by the French government who suddenly develops a conscience and a philosophy when he is ordered to kill a left wing Arab leader. His newfound ideals are provoked by the stunning Veronica (Karina) a young woman who is secretly employed by the Arabs. The two fall in love and not surprisingly Bruno finds it impossible to carry out his mission bringing down the wrath of the French government on both he and Veronica. Beautifully filmed by Raoul Coutard LES PETIT SOLDAT is less interested in the mechanics of plot as it is in providing Godard a voice for thoughts and musings on the politics and horrors of the Algerian War. It was originally banned in France because of its frank depiction of torture during Algeria's war of Independence which was tearing France apart at the time of the film's completion.

To escape arrest Carmen appears to submit to her obsessed lover and the two take refuge in a seaside apartment. However Carmen remains committed to her terrorist activities and plans a kidnapping whilst pretending to film a documentary for her uncle once a great film director. How will Joseph react to Carmen's apparent indifference to their relationship?
