This is cinematic poetry: Douglas contracted his subject matter to the barest essentials - dialogue is kept to a minimum, and fields, slag heaps and cobbled streets are shot in bleak monochrome. Yet with its unexpected humour and warmth, the Trilogy brims with clear-eyed humanity, and affection for an ultimately triumphant young boy.

Set in Paris in the late 1940's 'Sleeping Car to Trieste' is a tense Cold War thriller brilliantly directed by John Paddy Carstairs. Post war Europe is in turmoil. Agent Zurta (Albert Lieven) and his beautiful accomplice Valya (Jean Kent) steal a diary with vital Cold War secrets from an embassy in Paris. During the theft Zurta murders a servant and to throw the authorities off his trail enlists the help of Karl (Alan Wheatley). But Karl double crosses Zurta and attempts to makes his escape on the Orient Express. As the train pulls out of the Gare de Lyon in Paris there are some very contrasting characters on board. Zurta and Valya are on Karl's trail but he is tucked away in a hidden compartment. As the train hurtles through southern Europe the eclectic bunch of passengers which includes an adulterous couple and their idiot friend (David Tomlinson) a wealthy autocratic writer (Finley Currie) and a French police inspector seem determined to foil Zurta in his quest for the diary. As the film reaches its climax will Zurta and Valya recover the diary and make their escape or will they be captured before they reach the Iron Curtain?
One Million Years B.C. might be about as palaeontologically accurate as The Flintstones, but it's still a lasting kitsch masterpiece, as much for Raquel Welchs Amazonian presence in an abbreviated fur bikini as for Ray Harryhausens wonderful stop-motion dinosaurs. A rare big-budget venture from Hammer Films, this 1966 version of the 1940 Victor Mature classic One Million B.C. is set in a fantasised prehistory where Caucasian cavemen coexist with dinosaurs. Loana (Welch) of the Shell People teaches Tumak (John Richardson) of the Rock Tribe that harmonious cooperation on the beach is a better way of life than rule-of-the-mightiest savagery in caves. Every quarter of an hour, the gibberish-spouting ("Akita akita"), skin-wearing, remarkably clean cave folk are inconvenienced by special effects: a giant sea turtle, a hungry Allosaur, a Triceratops/Iguanodon battle, a Pterodactyl that wants to feed Raquel to its chicks, a major volcanic upheaval. Poster icon Welch gets stiff competition from a lithe Martine Beswick in a cat fight, and the camp goings-on are given real screen presence by gorgeous, primitive Canary Isles locations and an epic score from Mario Nascimbene. On the DVD: One Million Years B.C. arrives on DVD with minimal extras: a wonderfully ballyhoo-intensive trailer, plus nice little retrospective chats with Welch and Harryhausen. The English National Opera has always had an attractively light touch in Handel; this classic production, designed by Nicholas Hytner (director of The Madness of King George and The Crucible), manages to preserve both the work's occasional passion and its undercutting of that passion into urbane absurdity. Anne Murray's Xerxes is a tyrant in love, who learns the hard way that he can neither play with, nor command, his subjects' affections; her forthright declamatory singing, not least in the famous "Larghetto", conveys both the petulance and the final grandeur of a man undergoing a sentimental education. Valerie Masterson and Christopher Hudson, as the principal pair of lovers, combine perfect singing with an attractive romantic ardour; Hudson in particular makes clear just how heroic a counter-tenor can sound, listened to without preconceptions. In the soubrette role of Atalanta, Lesley Garrett is a cute trouble-maker. Sir Charles Mackerras' conducting gives each of the genre arias of which the work consists both an appropriate intensity of emotion and an overall charm. The English libretto is by Hytner. The recording is decent PCM stereo and the picture, originally produced for TV broadcast, is in 4:3 ratio. --Roz Kaveney
Marcel Carné directs this classic French romantic drama starring Jean Gabin. When a honeymooning couple visit the crumbling estate of the bride's ancestors, they discover her closet is filled with more than skeletons; a sinister lesbian vampire, a pair of nubile handmaidens, and two vampire hunters who have been recruited into the ranks of the undead.
With its star's bottom looming large on the cover, erotic adventure All Ladies Do It is clearly the work of Italian director Tinto Brass. It is another tale of a young woman and her quest to fulfil her sexual desires, in this case Claudia Koll's Diane, who embarks on a series of casual affairs much to the interest of husband Paul who, assuming that her tales are merely the product of an active imagination, finds himself aroused by their content. In the meantime, Diane is increasing her circle of lovers before a trip to Venice threatens to bring her dual life crashing down. The plot is frankly secondary to Brass' appreciation of the female form (absolutely no opportunity is missed to focus on Koll's behind) and it all becomes a little ludicrous. The original Italian title ("Cosi fan tutte") is derived from Mozart's comic opera but, unlike the opera's convoluted sexual politics, here there is only a rather confused attempt at expressing a quasi-feminist message about female independence. All Ladies Do It is best viewed as a piece of glossy titillation and nothing more. On the DVD: Brass certainly knows how to make the best of a location and there are some exceptionally beautiful shots of Venice to be found among the carnal adventures. The extras include a filmography and photo gallery as well as a low quality but telling interview with the director, during which he expounds on a rather strange theory regarding women's bottoms and the fact that, unlike their faces, they cannot lie. --Phil Udell
