Beautifully filmed in the Yorkshire Dales '1914 All Out' mixes the heartbreak of the 1914-18 War with the romance of village life. It tells the story of two brothers and their love for the same beautiful girl Jean whose peaceful existence is shattered by the tragic events of The Great War. It is August Bank Holiday 1914 in the picturesque Yorkshire village of East Grisewold and the villagers are celebrating with a cricket match. The tranquil setting is shattered by the outbreak of War and the first army volunteers are soon leaving for Europe including Ken Houghton. Sadly Ken is killed at the Somme and the focus shifts to his younger brother Joe who then courts his great love Jean. Joe finally returns from War confident that he is a better cricketer and determined to win Jean's love. 1914 All Out was written by the playwright Colin Schindler after he saw a memorial commemorating those who had fought and died in the Great War. He wondered what the effect of the loss of life would be on a small village during and after the war.

John Candy has one of his finest opportunities in this film by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) about a perpetual screw-up (Candy) who gets his act together enough to watch over his brother's kids effectively. The late actor scores big points resurrecting elements of his more decadent persona from SCTV days, but he also has some persuasively touching, sentimental moments. Hughes's direction is not as focused as it was only a few years before, but there's no mistaking his touch. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, production notes, biographies, Dolby sound, optional Spanish and French soundtracks. --Tom Keogh

An early work from director Luc Besson, Subway is a dark and highly stylised picture which concerns an enigmatic safecracker (Christopher Lambert) hiding out in the Paris Metro system. While living in the underground and eluding both gangsters and Metro police he meets up with a group of colourful and quirky subterranean inhabitants eager to help him and start a rock band. All the while the safecracker blackmails a rich woman (Isabelle Adjani) with whom he is in love. Meant to be a tongue-in-cheek commentary on urban life, the film works better as a light freewheeling entertainment, with well-constructed fast-paced action sequences and a breezy sense of humour about itself. Subway is an intriguing diversion and a chance to see the cutting-edge of contemporary French moviemaking. --Robert Lane
Set in a fantasy world, this animated love story centres on the cursed Sophie and a magician named Howl.
La Belle et la bête is a landmark feat of cinematic fantasy in which master filmmaker Jean Cocteau conjures spectacular visions of enchantment, desire and death that have never been equalled. Josette Day is luminous yet feisty as Beauty, and Jean Marais gives one of his best performances as the Beast, at once brutal and gentle, rapacious and vulnerable, shamed and repelled by his own bloodlust. Henri Alekan's subtle black and white cinematography combine with Christian Bérard's masterly costumes and set designs to create a magical piece of cinema, a children's fairy tale refashioned into a stylised and highly sophisticated dream. The BFI is proud to present this world cinema classic in High Definition for the first time in the UK. Extras: Presented in High Definition Audio commentary with cultural historian Sir Christopher Frayling Fully illustrated booklet with new writing on the film and full film credits
The Flashing Blade is a tale of high adventure set in 1630 as the dashing Chevalier de Recci (Robert Etcheverry) undertakes a dangerous mission across occupied territory to avert war between France and Spain. This 13-episode serial was made for French television in 1967, and in dubbed form regularly shown on the BBC during school holidays from 1969 through the 1970s (usually when 1965's Adventures of Robinson Crusoe was having a rest). This release is aimed at that generation who, from the spine-tingling theme song onward, remember the show with tremendous affection. Like the classic Hollywood movie serials, each 23-minute episode packs in a couple of action sequences; some plot twists, a little comic relief and very variable acting and costumes. For a children's programme the story is remarkably complex, and takes a while to gather pace. The colours have faded, the use of classical music is clumsy, but the dubbing is surprisingly accomplished. The swashbuckling action is at odds with the more serious historical drama, but viewed with nostalgia The Flashing Blade is thoroughly entertaining vintage TV. --Gary S Dalkin
