Becky Sharp is a governess, temptress and social climber supreme, a woman who more than compenstes in brains and beauty for what she conspicuously lacks in breeding. To what lengths will she go in order to secure herself and rich and high-born husband? And how many male hearts will be left broken along the way?We follow Becky's journey from the elegant salons of Georgian London to the battlefields of Waterloo, from her ill-fated attempts to woo the buffonish Joe Sedley, to her equally doomed marriage to the aristocratic cad Rawdon Crawley. The unsinkable Becky's progress is mirrored by that of her best friend Amelia, who is besotted with the raffish George Osborne, but secretly admired by Osborne's staunch ally William Dobbin. Can both women survive the foibles of love and the catastrophic events unfolding in England and abroad?

  • Longitude [1999]Longitude | DVD | (15/07/2002) from £15.08   |  Saving you £-5.09 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Gracefully adapted from Dava Sobel's extraordinary bestseller, the four-part TV production of Longitude combines drama, history and science into a stimulating, painstakingly authentic account of personal triumph and joyous discovery. Equally impressive is the way writer-director Charles Sturridge has crafted parallel stories that complement each other with enriching perspective. The first story involves the successful 40-year effort of 18th-century clockmaker John Harrison (Michael Gambon) to solve the elusive problem of measuring longitude at sea. In 1714 the British Parliament had offered a generous reward to anyone who solved the problem, and Harrison devoted his life to that solution. The second story, some 200 years later, involves the effort of shell-shocked British Navy veteran Rupert Gould (Jeremy Irons) to restore the glorious clocks that Harrison had built. Like Harrison, Gould is the most admirable type of obsessive, but, also like Harrison, he risks his marriage to accomplish his difficult task. Thousands of sailors perished at sea before Harrison's triumph changed history, but Longitude demonstrates that Harrison's glory was slow to arrive--and his prize money even slower. A fascinating study of 18th-century British politics and clashing egos in the arena of science, the film is both epic and intimate in consequence , and Sturridge's magnificent script inspires Gambon and Irons to do some of the best work of their outstanding careers . The ever-reliable Ian Hart appears in Part 3 as Harrison's now-adult son and apprentice, and Longitude approaches its dramatic climax with the exhilarating tension of a first-rate thriller. Rallying after sickness to prove the integrity of their marvellous seafaring chronometers, the Harrisons still had to fight for official recognition, and Gould's restoration of the Harrison clockworks provides a fitting coda to this exceptional story about the thrill of discovery and the tenacity of remarkable men. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

  • The Net [1995]The Net | DVD | (01/08/2005) from £10.76   |  Saving you £-1.78 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

The Net, the first of Hollywood's big cyber-thrillers of the mid-1990s, was also the most successful, thanks in large part to the natural appeal of star Sandra Bullock. Still riding high from Speed and While You Were Sleeping, Bullock plays a computer expert victimised by sinister cyber-forces who steal her identity for reasons unknown. It's a clever combination of high-tech paranoia and Hitchcockian references (including Jeremy Northam as a romantic stranger named Devlin, after Cary Grant in Notorious). Film historians may look back someday on films like this--Roger Ebert calls them "hacksploitation"--to see what they reveal about our society's reaction to the increasing role of technology in our lives, just as we now study the fears of Communism and the atom bomb reflected in films of the 1950s. Dennis Miller and Diane Baker co-star. --Jim Emerson, Amazon.com

The Bourne IdentityAs The Bourne Identity begins, a man who may or may not be Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is found floating in the Mediterranean Sea and is hauled onto a fishing boat. When the ship's doctor examines the unconscious castaway, he discovers two bullet wounds and an implanted device that displays a Swiss bank account number. With nothing but this code, the amnesiac Bourne travels to Zurich and gains access to a safe-deposit box containing a gun, thousands of dollars in various currencies, and valid passports from numerous countries - each listing a different identity. Within minutes, Bourne is on the run from a seemingly ever-present agency, relying on language and fighting skills he didn't even know he possessed. Offering $20,000 for a ride to Paris, Bourne gains the reluctant help of the nomadic Marie (Franka Potente). Meanwhile, the shadowy organization, headed by a tough-talking bureaucrat (Chris Cooper), sends numerous assassins (including the Professor, played by Clive Owen) after Bourne and Marie. As their situation grows more perilous, the two strangers struggle to find out who Bourne really is and why they are being hunted. The Bourne SupremacyThe Bourne Supremacy re-enters the shadowy world of expert assassin Jason Bourne (Damon), who continues to find himself plagued by the splintered nightmares from his former life. Having lost his memory and the one person he loved, he is undeterred by the barrage of bullets and a new generation of highly-trained killers. Bourne has only one objective: to go back to the beginning and find out who he was. Now, in the new chapter of this espionage series, Bourne will hunt down his past in order to find a future. The Bourne LegacyThe Bourne Legacy introduces a brand new hero Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) - an agent on the run from destruction and on a journey to discover the truth, in life-or-death stakes created by events of the first three Bourne Films. Cross and Dr. Shearing (Rachel Weisz) fight to survive as CIA Ops, led by Eric Byer (Edward Norton) attempt to shut down their Operation and make everyone involved disappear for good.

  • Margin Call [Blu-ray]Margin Call | Blu Ray | (18/01/2016) from £6.99   |  Saving you £1.00 (14.31%)   |  RRP £7.99

Evolving over 36 hours in a troubled New York trading firm, J.C. Chandor's Margin Call--the true-ish story of the origins of the 2008 financial crisis--ranks alongside Wall Street, American Psycho and Glengarry Glen Ross in Hollywood’s long-standing fascination with the corrupting logic of late capitalism. The film’s opening round of lay-offs, one of several, includes that of a risk analyst (Stanley Tucci) who has secretly uncovered the runaway corrosive effects of the firm's big success story (and the bête noire of recent economic history): hyper-leveraged securities backed by sub-prime lending. Sensing meltdown, his protégé (Zachary Quinto) sends a warning signal up the corporate ladder--an overnight crisis meeting is convened; a drastic plan is forged--and the firm resolves to dump the bad schemes at the cost of projected global recession. The rest, we know, is history. Like Charles Ferguson's 2010 documentary Inside Job, Margin Call is tuned in to our suspicions of post-Keynesian economics, imagining high finance as an alchemy of unreal quantities from which huge profits can be netted. But if nobody, even academia, comes out of Inside Job intact, Margin Call presents a range of ethical positions: Kevin Spacey is a believably weary sales manager for whom Wall Street status is a gilded cage, while Simon Baker and Demi Moore are superb as unreflecting high-rollers, frosted over with greed and cynicism. Neither extremes are as interesting as Paul Bettany's pragmatic rank-and-file trader with a talent for corporate survival--and Jeremy Irons’ towering performance as CEO John Tuld (not to be confused with former CEO of Lehman Brothers Richard Fuld, obviously) is the most primal embodiment of capitalism since Daniel Day-Lewis prospected for oil in There Will Be Blood. His verdict sounds depressingly like authentic Wall Street cant: financial crises and the misery they inflict are a necessary part of the economic cycle. --Leo Batchelor
