  • Dante's Peak [1997]Dante's Peak | DVD | (17/04/2019) from £7.98   |  Saving you £5.01 (62.78%)   |  RRP £12.99

The first of 1997's volcano disaster movies (the second being Volcano) was arguably the better of the two but both of them made for passable entertainment with some spectacular special effects to serve as icing on the stale cake. After all, Dante's Peak doesn't pretend to be anything more than an updated variation on a whole catalogue of disaster movie clichés. Despite all that, it's reasonably enjoyable. It's an added bonus that the script is just smart enough to allow Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton to play their roles with straight faces, never condescending to the audience of the formulaic story. He's a volcano expert from the US Geological Survey, and she's the mayor of a cosy Washington State town perched beneath a volcano that's about to blow. Tell-tale signs are everywhere, so evacuation must be carried out immediately. Of course, not everybody's eager to leave and even some of Brosnan's colleagues think his alarm is premature. This sets the stage for massive ash clouds, rivers of raging mud and molten rock, flattened forests and death-defying escapes by Brosnan, Hamilton and some (but not all) of her family, friends and townsfolk. So what if it's all pretty flaky ... and can a four-wheel-drive vehicle travel over fire and molten lava without bursting its tires? Don't ask too many questions and you'll find Dante's Peak to be (if you'll pardon the pun) a total blast. --Jeff Shannon

  • Margin Call [DVD]Margin Call | DVD | (18/01/2016) from £6.99   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Evolving over 36 hours in a troubled New York trading firm, J.C. Chandor's Margin Call--the true-ish story of the origins of the 2008 financial crisis--ranks alongside Wall Street, American Psycho and Glengarry Glen Ross in Hollywood’s long-standing fascination with the corrupting logic of late capitalism. The film’s opening round of lay-offs, one of several, includes that of a risk analyst (Stanley Tucci) who has secretly uncovered the runaway corrosive effects of the firm's big success story (and the bête noire of recent economic history): hyper-leveraged securities backed by sub-prime lending. Sensing meltdown, his protégé (Zachary Quinto) sends a warning signal up the corporate ladder--an overnight crisis meeting is convened; a drastic plan is forged--and the firm resolves to dump the bad schemes at the cost of projected global recession. The rest, we know, is history. Like Charles Ferguson's 2010 documentary Inside Job, Margin Call is tuned in to our suspicions of post-Keynesian economics, imagining high finance as an alchemy of unreal quantities from which huge profits can be netted. But if nobody, even academia, comes out of Inside Job intact, Margin Call presents a range of ethical positions: Kevin Spacey is a believably weary sales manager for whom Wall Street status is a gilded cage, while Simon Baker and Demi Moore are superb as unreflecting high-rollers, frosted over with greed and cynicism. Neither extremes are as interesting as Paul Bettany's pragmatic rank-and-file trader with a talent for corporate survival--and Jeremy Irons’ towering performance as CEO John Tuld (not to be confused with former CEO of Lehman Brothers Richard Fuld, obviously) is the most primal embodiment of capitalism since Daniel Day-Lewis prospected for oil in There Will Be Blood. His verdict sounds depressingly like authentic Wall Street cant: financial crises and the misery they inflict are a necessary part of the economic cycle. --Leo Batchelor

  • The Complete League Of GentlemenThe Complete League Of Gentlemen | DVD | (30/05/2005) from £21.99   |  Saving you £18.00 (81.86%)   |  RRP £39.99

The bizarre yet critically acclaimed BBC television series The League of Gentlemen is to sitcoms like The Good Life or even Friends what David Lynch's films are to Frank Capra movies. Instead of the usual one-family-in-suburbia or group-of-pals set-up, Gentlemen centres on the whole town of Royston Vasey. A Northern village of, to say the least, eccentric characters, the weird people of Royston Vasey (actually, the real name of lewd northern comic Roy Chubby Brown) look like they've been intermarrying for too long and are suffering from a particularly demented variety of xenophobia that drives them to extremes of tetchiness and psychosis. There are the local shopkeepers Edward and Tubbs, who go to murderous lengths to ensure their shop remains for local people only; the Denton family, toad-breeders obsessed with maintaining their household rituals at all costs; inept veterinary surgeon Dr Chinnery, who's never yet saved a patient; Barbara, the local transsexual taxi driver (one of the show's more well adjusted characters); Pauline the demonic Restart Officer at the local Job Centre; and Lance, the sadistic owner of Lance's Joke Shop which sells poisonous sweets and the ever-popular finger in a matchbox (with a real finger), among many others. Most of the characters are performed by the three core members of the group, sporting a disturbing variety of prosthetic demi-masks and latex make-up, who started the concept off with a stage show and then transferred it to radio before taking it on TV, which may explain why The League of Gentlemen seems blithely oblivious to normal sitcom conventions and has a stately air of surrealism that feels like The Archers as written by playwright Eugene Ionesco. Brilliant stuff. --Leslie Felperin

  • Jerry Maguire [1997]Jerry Maguire | DVD | (18/04/2011) from £5.74   |  Saving you £0.25 (4.36%)   |  RRP £5.99

One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s as well as a box-office hit, Jerry Maguire cemented writer-director Cameron Crowe's reputation as "the voice of a generation". Crowe could probably do without that label, but he's definitely in sync with the times with this savvy story about a sports agent (Tom Cruise) whose fall from grace motivates his quest for professional recovery, and the slow-dawning realisation that he needs the love and respect of the single mom (Renée Zellweger in her breakthrough role) who has supported him through the worst of times. This is one of Cruise's best, most underrated performances, and in an Oscar-winning role, Cuba Gooding Jr. plays the football star who remains Jerry Maguire's only loyal client on a hard road to redemption and personal growth. If that sounds touchy-feely, it is only because Crowe has combined sharp entertainment with a depth of character that is rarely found in mainstream comedy. --Jeff Shannon

Hit man Martin Q Blank (John Cusack) is in an awkward situation. Several of them, actually. He's attending his high school reunion on an assignment; he's got a rival hit man (Dan Aykroyd) on his tail; and he's going to have to explain to his old girlfriend (Minnie Driver) why he stood her up on prom night. Grosse Pointe Blank is an amiable black comedy, cowritten by Cusack and directed by Jonathan Demme protégé George Armitage (Miami Blues), has the feel of Demme's Something Wild and Married to the Mob--which is to say its humour is dark and brightly coloured at the same time. Cusack and Driver are utterly charming--as is the leading man's sister, Joan, who plays his secretary. (Cusack received an Oscar nomination for her next role, in In & Out.) Alan Arkin is also very funny as Martin's psychiatrist. --Jim Emerson
