While it works better as a somber mood piece than a futuristic thriller, The Final Cut posits a unique what-if scenario that some viewers will find fascinating. In a role that calls for his low-key One Hour Photo persona, Robin Williams plays an expert "cutter" who's in demand for his ability to distill anyone's lifetime into a feature-length "rememory" film that highlights the better side of anyone's nature. His profession is made possible by the "Zoe" chip, a prenatal brain implant capable of recording a person's entire lifetime--a technology opposed by a former cutter (Jim Caviezel) and puzzled over by Williams' on-and-off girlfriend (Mira Sorvino). First-time writer-director Omar Naim divided critics with his impressive visual style and lackluster screenplay, which fails to account for the larger implications of the Zoe chip's exploitation. Still, the film contains several intriguing ideas that place it among other sci-fi films like Gattaca, suggesting one of the many potential controversies that await us in a future where ethics and technology are not always compatible. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

  • Tales Out of School - Four Plays by David Leland [DVD]Tales Out of School - Four Plays by David Leland | DVD | (04/07/2011) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

These four television films originally screened by Channel 4 in 1983 brought the emerging writing talent of former actor David Leland to national attention. He would subsequently win a BAFTA Award for his directorial debut Wish You Were Here and an Emmy Award for his contribution to Band of Brothers and work on screenplays for Mona Lisa and Personal Services. Featuring early roles for Tim Roth and Jim Broadbent the plays form a scathing portrait of British society in the early 1980s focusing in particular on the polarisation of attitudes towards the role and methods of education in an increasingly fragmented society. Without overtly offering solutions Leland s plays depict - often with unnerving acuity and foresight - the experience of individuals within systems that have become inadequate in dealing with the fallout of social breakdown. Of the four plays presented here Made in Britain directed by Alan Clarke (Scum) inevitably aroused the strongest controversy with Tim Roth s astonishing portrayal of a nihilistic racist teenage skinhead captured by Chris Menges innovative cinematography; the screenplay won Leland the Prix Italia in 1983. Birth Of A Nation: Featuring Jim Broadbent the play dramatises the conflict between old authoritarian teaching methods and the more relaxed approach of progressive educationalists. Flying Into The Wind: Graham Crowden stars in a play depicting the battle between parents who want to home-educate their children and the local education authority. R.H.I.N.O.: The harrowing story of Angela a disenfranchised young black girl living in 1980s London and her encounters with a well-meaning but often ineffectual social system. Made In Britain: Directed by Alan Clarke Tim Roth makes his TV debut as a hate-filled teenage skinhead on a self-destructive campaign destined to lead to permanent incarceration.

  • Dinotopia [2002]Dinotopia | DVD | (26/12/2002) from £18.97   |  Saving you £1.02 (5.38%)   |  RRP £19.99

Kids will love this sweeping story of two brothers whose plane crashes on a mysterious island called Dinotopia, where human beings live in harmony with dinosaurs--the herbivores, anyway. The carnivores present a problem, as the humans' defences against them--a mystical power source called sunstones--are losing strength. As they try to save the island, Carl and David (Tyron Leitso and Wentworth Miller) struggle not only with tyrannosaurs and prehistoric crocodiles, but also with repressive Dinotopian traditions and a scheming malcontent (David Thewlis) who stirs up all kinds of trouble. Meanwhile, they also wrestle with each other over the lovely daughter of the mayor of Waterfall City (Katie Carr). The pacifist ideals of Dinotopia are refreshing, but it's the special effects that will hook viewers: riding on the backs of brachiosaurs, flying atop pteranadons, arguing in court with triceratops and ankylosaurs. Anyone fascinated with dinosaurs (and who isn't?) will enjoy this whimsical fantasy. A host of British character actors also helps keep the human side of this four-hour mini-series lively; Alice Krige (also known as the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact) gets a much more benevolent role here. --Bret Fetzer

  • Father Ted - Series 3 [1997]Father Ted - Series 3 | DVD | (20/05/2002) from £6.76   |  Saving you £13.23 (195.71%)   |  RRP £19.99

This set contains the final series of Father Ted, which ended abruptly in 1998 with the death of its talented comic star, Dermot Morgan. The eight episodes here are a little uneven, but the best stuff is classic, laugh-out-loud satire, including "Are You Right There, Father Ted", in which Morgan's titular Catholic priest is re-banished to Ireland's Craggy Island, a green rock replete with paranoid sheep, randy milkmen, Nazi memorabilia collectors and an inexplicably large community of Chinese immigrants. Outstanding, too, is "Speed 3", in which Ted discovers that a number of babies recently born on Craggy all look like a self-made swinger named Pat Mustard. "Kicking Bishop Brennan Up the Arse" speaks for itself, and "The Mainland" gives supporting actor Ardal O'Hanlon (as idiotic fellow cleric Dougal) a great showcase. --Tom Keogh

  • Tarzan And Jane [2002]Tarzan And Jane | DVD | (22/07/2002) from £4.90   |  Saving you £11.09 (226.33%)   |  RRP £15.99

As Tarzan and Jane's first anniversary of wedded jungle bliss approaches, Jane ponders what gift would be appropriate--necessitating three flashbacks from the Disney television series explaining why various celebrations are out of the question. First Jane remembers when her old British school chums came to rescue her from the bush and whisk her back to civilization. Then Terk and Tantor help her recall the time diamond miners hired Tarzan only to double-cross him. The final remembrance features Jane's old neighbour Robert who flies to Africa to recover a music box he gave her--and to betray England. Michael T. Weiss and Olivia D'Abo do the honours as the voices of Tarzan and Jane and Mandy Moore and Phil Collins provide the vocals for two new songs. Like many of Disney's straight-to-video "sequels", the animation and story aren't up to par with the original; but the kids won't care. Ages 3 and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs, Amazon.com
