Spirit - Stallion Of The Cimarron (Dir. Kelly Asbury / Lorna Cook 2002): A refreshingly old-fashioned and gentle tale of a mustang stallion struggling to remain free in the old West. The film is a seamless blend of traditional hand-drawn and computer-generated animation. Opening with an impressive bird's eye pan of the Grand Canyon from the viewpoint of an eagle SPIRIT captures the unspoiled beauty of the land. The animals in this particular animated film do not talk and Matt Damon provides effective sparse narration from the perspective of Spirit an adventurous young stallion who is captured by the U.S. Army. But Spirit will not let the soldiers saddle and ride him. An authoritarian colonel (voiced by James Cromwell) is determined to break Spirit at one point starving the horse to weaken him. A Lakota prisoner Little Creek (voiced by Daniel Studi) is impressed with the horse and helps him to escape. Little Creek can't break the horse either. But the two learn to respect each other and Spirit meets Rain Little Creek's horse and falls in love. The Road To El Dorado (Dir. At its best, Grateful Dawg celebrates the easy friendship and truly inspired musicianship of Jerry Garcia and David Grisman through grainy home-movie footage with surprisingly crisp sound. Garcia was famous as the visionary behind the Grateful Dead, but his musical tastes were broad and he found a rewarding partnership with mandolinist Grisman, whose distinctive "Dawg" style fused jazz with bluegrass. As one of the film's commentators says, Grisman made Garcia tighter as a musician, while Garcia made Grisman looser, and where they met they created an infectious, rootsy style they called Grateful Dawg. The film's many highlights include instrumental versions of "Dawg Waltz", "Shady Grove" and "Arabia", as well as splendid footage from Garcia and Grisman's days in Old & In The Way. The talking heads inserted ham-fistedly between and over performances become repetitious and finally downright annoying. But Garcia and Grisman fans will still enjoy the glimpse of a rare musical alchemy. --Anne Hurley

China Moon (1991) is a pleasing entertainment that assembles the dependable elements of film noir in the tradition of Body Heat (1981), The Last Seduction (1994) and, of course, the mother of all such films, Double Indemnity (1944). There's a femme fatale (the beautiful and talented Madeleine Stowe) and an honest cop (reliable Ed Harris) who soon becomes smitten. Her husband (Charles Dance) is a brute who beats her, so she murders him and inveigles Harris into helping her dispose of the body. That's when the complications begin, and Harris starts to sweat when his fellow cop keeps asking awkward questions. The acting is uniformly good, with Harris' partner played by Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) offering an excellent performance. Harris and Stowe strike sparks off each other, to the point where you almost believe he is being sucked into her schemes. On the DVD: The disc contains a theatrical trailer and several TV ads, with scroll-down filmographies of the major talents involved which are incomplete for some unknown reason. There's a brief and unenlightening five-minute documentary, with the principal cast plus the director, John Bailey, commenting on the film. Both image and sound are excellent quality, sound in Dolby Digital, picture in anamorphic widescreen ratio of 2.35:1 --Ed Buscombe

An evil gang takes over an amusement park only to be foiled by three Ninja-trained brothers and a TV action star in 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain, a smartly-paced, if by-the-numbers, kiddie action flick. Medusa (Loni Anderson) and Lothar (Jim Varney) head up the gang with ransom money and mayhem on their minds. But they don't count on the young trio, taught by their Asian grandfather, and Dave Dragon (Hulk Hogan), making a live appearance at the park. What follows is campy humour, lots of Karate-style action and plenty of Home Alone-type boy vs foolish bad-guy high jinks. And girls aren't left out: the brothers' neighbour, a brainy techno girl, is on hand to hack into the computer and override the gang's murderous plans, while also providing 007-style gadgets for hand-to-hand combat. While there is plenty of gunplay in the 90-minute film, no one is killed or even significantly hurt, making it appropriate for ages five and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs, Amazon.com
