Two of the high-priests of horror directors George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead Monkey Shines) and Dario Argento (Tenebre Phenomena) each pay tribute to Edgar Allan Poe with screen adaptions of the master's most terrifying tales from the dark side. Romero's shock-filled story (The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar) centres on a greedy young wife's bid to trick her dying husband out of his millions and the terror that is unleashed when mysterious beings take possession of the old man's body. The inspiration for Argento's blood-curdling tale is Poe's The Black Cat. Skilfully grafting in chilling scenes from several of Poe's other classic stories Argento's trip into terror tells of a man's cruel obsession with his wife's cat that finally drives him to murder of the most gruesome kind.

  • A Sense Of Freedom [1984]A Sense Of Freedom | DVD | (23/02/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Based on the autobiography of former criminal Jimmy Boyle 1979's A SENSE OF FREEDOM was one of the most controversial and influential dramas of its time. Directed by John Mackenzie (The Long Good Friday) and featuring the camerawork of Oscar-winning cinematographer Chris Menges (The Mission; The Killing Fields) it was justifiably hailed by critics and the public alike for its unflinching depiction of prison life and criminal rehabilitation. A SENSE OF FREEDOM tells the moving and ultimately uplifting story of Jimmy Boyle. Born and bred on the tough streets of Glasgow's notorious Gorbals area Boyle followed in his criminal father's footsteps to become one of the city's most well-known and most violent racketeering hardmen. His life of crime came to a sudden end in the late 1960s when he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a rival gangster. Incarcerated in the controversial special rehabilitation unit of Glasgow's infamous Barlinnie Prison Boyle discovers the meaning of rough justice when full of rage and hostility he attempts to take on the prison system and the authority of the wardens in the only way he knows how. Slowly and painfully he comes to realise there is more to life than violence and crime as he begins the long process of turning his life around. An extremely powerful film A SENSE OF FREEDOM perfectly illustrates the futility and severe brutality of life behind bars. It is also a deeply moving testament to the strength of the human spirit and a reminder that in life it is never too late to change for the better. Starring David Hayman (Trial And Retribution) and Fulton Mackay (Porridge) the film features original music by legendary blues artists Frankie Miller and Rory Gallagher.

  • Victoria Wood - An Audience With Victoria Wood [1988]Victoria Wood - An Audience With Victoria Wood | DVD | (16/09/2002) from £6.79   |  Saving you £3.20 (47.13%)   |  RRP £9.99

As Victoria Wood once said, "There's nothing you can't say if you say it in the right way". And she goes on to prove that triumphantly in An Audience with Victoria Wood, recorded in front of fellow celebs (whom she sends up effortlessly, describing her long-time collaborator Julie Walters as "the lady with the split ends"). Victoria Wood may be the queen of suburbia but her endless takes on the finer details of banality have an acuity of which Alan Bennett would be proud. Most people cannot do monologue without lapsing into self-consciousness. But she's just brilliant. Her depiction of a nervy woman attempting to conduct a survey in the street, for instance, is priceless: "Here's my ID. Yes, I do look rather startled. It was taken in a photo booth and someone had just poked an éclair through the curtain". She's like Joyce Grenfell on speed. And it's that surreal juxtaposition of the commonplace and the wacky that makes her routines anything but. Even when she takes up residence at the piano, belting out home-made ballads (and this video includes the famous "Let's Do It"), she's both touching and amusing. At one point, she suggests that the British are no good at having fun. Get this video and prove her wrong. --Harriet Smith
