  Steven Seagal has always been an awkward action hero. Initially, he had a certain amount of credibility thanks to his nebulous association with secret government agencies and mastery of Aikido, which helped to excuse his bad acting. But as a self-righteous action hero in the vein of Schwarzenegger and Stallone, Seagal fell into unintentional self-parody faster and more dramatically than either of his two predecessors. In Out for Justice, Seagal plays Gino Felino, a Brooklyn-born cop known and respected by everyone--both good and bad--in his neighbourhood. The worst of the baddies is Richie Madano (William Forsythe), a crack-smoking killer who murders his partner and terrorises all. Technically, Felino is a terrible cop--touching evidence at murder scenes, stealing evidence, intimidating witnesses--but only by breaking those rules can he bring in this horrible criminal. As his soon-to-be-ex-wife discovers, he does everything because he cares too much.   The original series of the The Lakes brought writer Jimmy McGovern and actor John Simm a great deal of critical praise in 1997. Following a particularly dry period for British TV drama, the show's realistic characterisations and their painfully honest decisions hit audiences hard. Simm is a twentysomething trapped in a life of compulsive gambling, theft and being on the dole in Liverpool. On a whim he heads north to the Lake District. He expects to find the countryside quietude where his hidden poetical leanings might find a home, but instead gets caught up in a community like any other. Lies, temptation and tragedy beset every household just as much as the big city. In the second series, far longer than the first, an exploration of Danny's tortured soul might have been the obvious continuation to the story; instead an almost Hitchcockian murder scenario occupies far more screen time. But by stretching things out, this second series does not have the same self-contained impact of the original. Additional writers only served to drag out Danny's boy-to-man journey. Ultimately, lessons are learned, including the realistic conclusion that life is without a poetical status quo. Despite the tail-off in overall quality, you'd be hard pressed to identify a better British drama in the years since. --Paul Tonks

Finally, 'Rebel Without a Cause' (1955) takes place over a 24-hour period and follows Jim Stark (Dean), a restless teenager who is always in trouble with the law. When Jim is picked up for being drunk and disorderly he notices Judy (Natalie Wood) at the police station and determines to ask her on a date at high school the next day, which leads him into conflict with her boyfriend Buzz (Corey Allen).

  In a bid to liven up and make more relevant the continued plight of the world's wildlife, S Club Goes Wild is a collection of seven programmes coproduced with the World Wildlife Fund. Each episode features one of the S Clubbers (typically accompanied by a couple others) travelling to the native country of a rare mammal or bird. Spiced up with audio excerpts from the group's hits, approximately half of each programme is dedicated to getting close to the endangered wildlife, whilst the rest is taken by the gang exploring the local surroundings. There are some great, if not terrifying moments in each programme, for example Jon, Tina and Jo trudging through a carpet of cockroaches to watch the collection of bird nests (to be made into the local delicacy of bird's nest soup), Paul milking a goat, Hannah paragliding on to Cococabana beach, and Bradley and Hannah rowing through a lake of alligators in the dark. Perhaps the embarrassment of being forced with his fellow S-Clubber Rachel to perform S Club hits to Kenyan tribes people and Siberian folk performers, was one of the reasons why Paul was the first to quit the band. Although more of each programme could have been dedicated to wildlife issues, they provide a fascinating and accessible insight into the diverse cultures of the world and the valuable work of the WWF. On The DVD: S Club Goes Wild features fact-filled menus before the start of each programme, providing further information on the featured country. There's also a fun, if rather simple interative quiz of the DVDs contents. As well as DVD-Rom links to the WWF and S Club Web site, there's an advanced photo gallery which allow the viewing of exclusive photographs of the band individually, or as part of a continuous slide show. --John Galilee
