Detective Inspector Sarah Lund (Sofie Grabol) returns in the long-awaited third and final series of The Killing (Forbrydelsen) Trilogy. The financial crisis is raging and the number of bankruptcies and repossessions is on the rise but Detective Inspector Sarah Lund has a newfound sense of peace in the form of a new job a new home and the recognition of achieving 25 years of service in the Police Force. What appears to be a random murder at a scrapyard in the Copenhagen docks begins to interfere with Lund's plans for a quieter life and draws attention towards the shipping and oil giant Zeeland run by billionaire Robert Zeuthen who is the third generation head of the family to run this business empire. He is already troubled by his recent divorce and internal struggles within the company. Meanwhile Sarah Lund is disturbed by an old flame Mathias Borch from the National Intelligence Service (PET) who fears that the killing in the docks is the beginning of an assassination attempt upon the Prime Minister. Prime Minister Kamper is himself in the middle of a turbulent election due to the pressures of the financial crisis and is looking for backing from the commercial sector including Zeeland. Rumours arise that Zeeland is threatening to move the company and its production aboard - a potential disaster for the local economy. Both Lund and the investigation quickly become embroiled in the politics of the financial crisis and all too late she begins to piece together the perpetrator's plan and the sort of debt he is seeking to reclaim; a moral debt which costs lives and involves the taking of a particularly chosen hostage. Destinies cross over all sections of Danish society as the hunt for the perpetrator intensifies towards a dark secret which eventually puts everything at stake for both the Prime Minister Robert Zeuthen and Sarah Lund.

  • Foreign CorrespondentForeign Correspondent | DVD | (21/04/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

The first of Alfred Hitchcock's World War II features, Foreign Correspondent was completed in 1940, as the European war was only beginning to erupt across national borders. Its titular hero, Johnny Jones (Joel McCrea), is an American crime reporter dispatched by his New York publisher to put a fresh spin on the drowsy dispatches emanating from overseas, his nose for a good story (and, of course, some fortuitous timing) promptly leading him to the "crime" of fascism and Nazi Germany's designs on European conquest. In attempting to learn more about a seemingly noble peace effort, Jones (who's been saddled with the dubious nom de plume Hadley Haverstock) walks into the middle of an assassination, uncovers a spy ring, and, not entirely coincidentally, falls in love--a pattern familiar to admirers of Hitchcock's espionage thrillers, of which this is a thoroughly entertaining example. McCrea's hardy Yankee charms are neatly contrasted with the droll English charm of colleague George Sanders; Herbert Marshall provides a plummy variation on the requisite, ambiguous "good-or-is-he-really-bad" guy; Laraine Day affords a lovely heroine; and Robert Benchley (who contributed to the script) pops up, albeit too briefly, for comic relief. As good as the cast is, however, it's Hitchcock's staging of key action sequences that makes Foreign Correspondent a textbook example of the director's visual energy: an assassin's escape through a rain-soaked crowd is registered by rippling umbrellas, a nest of spies is detected by the improbable direction of a windmill's spinning sails and Jones's nocturnal flight across a pitched city rooftop produces its own contextual comment when broken neon tubes convert the Hotel Europe into "Hot Europe". --Sam Sutherland

Steven Spielberg's alien abduction opus Taken is what happens when you cross-breed Close Encounters of the Third Kind with The Waltons. Obviously flushed with the success of the TV mini-series Band of Brothers, Spielberg's Dreamworks studio has created an equally epic 10-part story chronicling 50 years of habitual abduction over several generations of three American families. Beginning with the most notorious alien cover-up in US history, the 1947 "crash" at Roswell, New Mexico, Taken introduces the "Greys" and the families they routinely abduct, probe and, in a couple of cases, impregnate over the course of the ten hour-and-a-half-long episodes. The three families are: the Keys, from which first Russell, then his son Jessie, then grandson Danny, are all abducted; the Clarkes, who are descended from a liaison between lonely put-upon housewife Sally Clarke and one of the Roswell crash survivors; and the Crawfords, the ruthless G-men who are committed to uncovering the purpose behind the alien visitations at any cost. But even though the Greys' actions are at best ambiguous and at worst hostile, Taken is basically a soap opera, lacking the sinister undercurrent of either Dark Skies or The X-Files despite its science-fiction trappings. Nevertheless, this is an engaging series which has decent performances--most notably Joel Gretsch as psychotic Owen Crawford--special effects and an engaging enough storyline to make it entertaining, if somewhat disposable, TV. --Kristen Bowditch
