The Twilight Zone - Vol. 7 | DVD | (25/08/2000)

| RRP In 1959 screenwriter Rod Serling first opened the door to the "dimension of imagination" that is The Twilight Zone, a show quite unlike anything that had gone before, and better than much that has followed in its wake. This original and daring television series ran for a magnificent five seasons from 1959 to 1964 and still looks as fresh as ever, particularly on DVD. What distinguished the series (and still does) is the quality of the scripts, many of which were penned by Serling, but with significant contributions from veteran sci-fi authors and screenwriters such as Richard Matheson. Actors of the calibre of Robert Redford, Burgess Meredith, Lee Marvin and William Shatner gave some of their best small-screen performances, while an unforgettable main title theme by Bernard Herrmann and musical contributions from young turks such as Jerry Goldsmith underlined the show's attraction for great creative talent both behind and in front of the cameras. On the DVD: A neat animated menu with a winking eye guides the viewer "Inside the Twilight Zone", which consists of digests of background information on the individual episodes, as well as a general history of the show, a season-by-season breakdown and a potted biography of Serling. --Mark Walker

| RRP Double Feature Disaster in the Atlantic On April 14 1912 the greatest ship of the time and man's monument to the technological achievement the Royal Mail Steamer Titanic would sail into the lexicon of history. At 11:46 p.m. aboard ship the lookout signaled to the bridge and reported an iceberg right ahead. Within moments the Titanic struck ice and foundered in just over 2 hours. 2 223 souls were aboard. Only 706 would survive. Countless lives would be forever changed by the disaster. Indeed the trajedy touched the hearts of people around the world. No other historical event would inspire as many literary and cinematic treatments on the subject. This historical presentation was produced in 1929 and is the first feature sound film of the disaster. The Titanic Chronicles The Titanic Chronicles was an attempt to understand what happened to the Titanic the American government held a series of hearings to investigate the disaster. These hearings were filled with eyewitness accounts that detailed every minute of that terrifying night and they represented several different points of view. The U.S. Senate hearings were opened to the public and they were held in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The hearings were chaired by Senator William Alden Smith of Michigan. Senator Smith's mission was simple: find out what had gone wrong and to discover the truth. This program is a reenactment of the most striking and revealing moments from the actual hearings. The testimony you will hear comes the closest to the truth as to why the R.M.S. Titanic now lies on the bottom of the North Atlantic.

Dead Sexy | DVD | (08/10/2001)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Dead Sexy is yet another entry in the spurious "erotic thriller" genre. Although it attempts to pass itself off as a crime drama, the credibility of the whole affair is stretched somewhat by casting ex-Playboy Playmate Shannon Tweed in the lead role of Detective Kate McBain, the police officer leading investigations into a suspected serial killer. This time, though, Tweed (who also produced the film) does a sterling job of both keeping her clothes on (most of the time) and acting her way through the movie. Every cliché in the book is utilised, but the movie might have stood up to repeated viewing if it took itself a little less seriously. As it is, the frequent sex scenes are crow-barred in to signal some sort of plot development as the whole thing moves towards its rather lame conclusion, unable to decide whether it wants to offer explicit adult entertainment or serious drama. Ultimately this is one for fans of Tweed, not those who relish a good whodunit. On the DVD: Dead Sexy is surprisingly high-budget and offers good picture and sound quality. Extras are limited to a filmography of Tweed and her wooden co-star John Enos, plus a theatrical trailer that does a fair job of summing up the movie's mix of sex and action. --Phil Udell

| RRP Stargate SG-1 is the TV spin-off from the 1994 big-screen movie. In the roles of Colonel Jack O'Neill and Dr Daniel Jackson respectively are Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks. They're joined by Captain Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and guilt-stricken former alien baddie Teal'c (Christopher Judge) to form the primary unit SG-1. With a seemingly endless network of Stargates found to exist on planets all across the known universe, their mission is to make first contact with as many friendly races as possible. Episodes on this DVD:"Between Two Fires". If there's one lesson SG-1 has learned, it's to always look a gift horse in the mouth. So when old acquaintances the Tollan offer Earth a brace of advanced weaponry, Jack's the first to raise a questioning hand and wonder if they aren't "Between Two Fires". Some James Bond-style sneaking about soon unravels the mystery. "2001". A lot of behind-the-scenes political machinations occur during "2001". There's another gloriously menacing cameo from Ronny Cox as Senator Kinsey who's desperately trying to dismantle the Stargate programme. All of which makes the A-plot about a new ally somewhat insignificant! But as always with newcomers on the show, the Aschen may not be all they appear to be. "Desperate Measures". Driven to "Desperate Measures", the perpetrator behind the kidnap of Major Carter puts everyone in an ethical quandary. Jack is forced to team up with his old foe Maybourne to find her. As if his cameo isn't insidious and slimy enough, there's another terrifically snake-like appearance by John de Lancie as Colonel Simmons. "Wormhole X-Treme!". Coming soon to network TV is "Wormhole X-Treme!", a science fiction show featuring an intrepid team travelling to other worlds via an intergalactic portal. Sound familiar? It sure does to the SGC, and when Jack and company investigate they discover dear old Willie Garson (Martin Lloyd from Season 4's Point of No Return) has become a whole new form of security problem. This is the show's 100th episode, and was created as a sort of Galaxy Quest parody. Full of crew-member cameos and in-jokes, it's definitely the best fun fans and cast have had amid the more dramatically serious story arc over the year. --Paul Tonks

| RRP One key point: if you can get over the natural gag reflex of seeing hundreds of rodents swarming over a restaurant kitchen, you will be free to enjoy the glory of Ratatouille, a delectable Pixar hit. Our hero is Remy, a French rat (voiced by Patton Oswalt) with a cultivated palate, who rises from his humble beginnings to become head chef at a Paris restaurant. How this happens is the stuff of Pixar magic, that ineffable blend of headlong comedy, seamless technology, and wonder (in the latter department, this movie's views of nighttime Paris are on a par with French cinema at its most lyrical). Director Brad Bird (The Incredibles) doesn't quite keep all his spinning plates in the air, but the gags are great and the animation amazingly expressive--Remy's shrugs and nods are nimbler than many flesh-and-blood actors can manage. Refreshingly, the movie's characters aren't celebrity-reliant, with the most recognisable voice coming from Peter O'Toole's snide food critic. (This fellow provides the film's sole sour note--an oddly pointed slap at critics, those craven souls who have done nothing but rave about Pixar's movies over the years.) Brad Bird's style is more quick-hit and less resonant than the approach of Pixar honcho John Lasseter, but it's hard to complain about a movie that cooks up such bountiful pleasure. --Robert Horton
