Mirren commands the role of Tennison with authority, intelligence, and a touch of overachieving desperation. Superb performances, excellent writing, and understated direction make this BBC miniseries one of the most involving mysteries in years. Elizabeth runs to see what's wrong but doesn't return and by the time Michael reaches the room both have disappeared but he finds a ransom note demanding 0 000. In order to save his family Michael arranges to sell his interest in the business to his partner Robert LaSalle (John Lithgow) but Inspector Brie of the New Orleans police advises against giving in to the kidnappers. An attache case filled with fake notes and a radio transmitter is handed over and a furious chase ensues when the kidnapper escape with Elizabeth and Amy ending in a collision with a petrol tanker. The kidnappers' car bursts into flames and plunges into the river apparantly killing Michael's beloved wife and daughter. Sixteen years later Michael and La Salle go to Florence on a business trip. Michael can't resist revisiting the cathedral where he met Elizabeth and it is here that he meets a young Italian woman called Sandra who bears a striking resemblance to his late wife. Sandra (also played by Genevieve Bujold) and Michael fall in love and return to the States and Sandra develops a fascination for Elizabeth even wearing her jewellry and styling her hair in the same way. However Michael's new found happiness is short-lived. During their wedding night Sandra disappears and Michael awakes to find a ransom note.... The haunting music was scored by Bernard Hermann and was nominated for an Oscar for 'Best Original Score' in 1977. Hermann also composed the music for Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo which inspired De Palma to write Obsession.

As one might expect, what follows is an action-packed barrage of bullets, bodies, and climactic confrontations, replete with enough plot contrivances to give even the most jaded action fan cause for alarm. It's a load of hooey, but the cast is obviously having a grand old time, and there's enough wit to make the recycled action sequences tolerable. --Jeff Shannon

  Ken Loach does for the railways in The Navigators what he did for the construction industry in Riff-Raff (1990). As ever, his sympathies lie firmly with the ordinary working blokes, not above of bit of banter and skiving, but essentially trying to do a decent job and stay loyal to their mates in the face of managerial double-talk and corporate devotion to the bottom line. It's 1995, and the Tories have just carried out their disastrous, pea-brained scheme to break up the railways. We follow the fortunes of a gang of track workers in South Yorkshire as they find themselves confronted with all the fallout of privatisation--redundancies, cost-cutting, corner-cutting and the wholesale junking of any concern with safety or quality of work. Accidental deaths, one hapless time-server explains, "have got to be kept to an acceptable level". Two scenes encapsulate the tragic-comic tone of the film. At one point the disbelieving workers are ordered by managers to smash up a load of new equipment; it's surplus to requirements, but can't possibly be sold to "the competition", their former British Rail workmates at the depot down the line. Later, called to a derailment, the track workers pass a whole series of hard-hat wearing managers, each paying no attention to what needs doing but muttering fiercely into a mobile phone trying to pass the buck for the accident to another company. Loach cast the film using local actors and comics, and there's a strong sense of authenticity in the flat accents and dry Yorkshire humour. But ultimately this is a lament for the destruction, not only of what was once a great rail network, but of the pride and camaraderie of those who worked on it. The film's ending is fittingly bleak. --Philip Kemp

Now Shackleton abandoning any remaining notions of completing the mission decides instead to bring back his crew alive at any cost even though the nearest outpost of civilization is on an island 800 miles away. Historic film clips of The Endurance shot by expedition photographer Frank Hurley new colour footage of the eerily beautiful Antarctic landscape as well as commentary by surviving family members and narration by Liam Neeson all combine to make watching this documentary a gripping experience.
