Earth vs. The Spider can't really make up its mind whether it's an homage to the B-movie horror genre (the title, but nothing else, has been lifted from the 1958 drive-in "classic"), a too-ironic-for-its-own-good spoof, or an uncomplicated but genuine monster flick. It passes as any of the above, so take your pick. The plot is hardly demanding: nerd's pal is murdered, nerd vows revenge, nerd injects himself with bug juice which turns him into a spider-like monstrosity, offs some bad guys then gets shot dead. Despite its lack of content, the movie's merciful brevity (one hour 26 minutes, roughly what all movies used to be) means that the pace is fast and that there's no room for padding (or real sub-plots, for that matter). The special effects are good and used surprisingly sparingly, which is a nice touch, and the brief coda is sarcastically witty. There's also what seems at first to be a nod in the direction of Toho's multi-monster epics, but those two giant furry caterpillars are in fact Theresa Russell's eyebrows. On the DVD: Earth vs. The Spider on disc is presented in 1.77:1 ratio. Extras include filmographies and a very brief "making of". The preliminary sketches of the creature in the photo gallery are well worth seeing. --Roger Thomas
Before Private Ryan was saved the Sullivan Brothers did their part for World War II. This rivetting and tragic drama was the basis for Steven Speilgberg's Saving Private Ryan and follows the true story of the five Sullivan brothers who served together at Guadalcanal in 1942. Their patriotisim and devotion to each other was overwhelming and took precedence over all else with tragic results. One of Hollywood's lost classics it was originally pulled from cinemas after its devastating effect on audiences of the time. The Fighting Sullivans is a story you may never have heard of but it's a movie you will never forget.

This affecting, bittersweet tale--adapted from Brian Friel's semi-autobiographical Tony Award-winning play--examines the emotional lives of the five unmarried Mundy sisters in 1936 rural Ireland. In their mutual care is eight-year-old Michael (sweetly understated Darrell Johnston), the illegitimate son of youngest sister Christina (Braveheart's Catherine McCormack). A voice-over from the adult Michael recalls that significant summer, in the month of August, during the feast of Lughnasa. The bolder townsfolk dance around a fire to Lugh, an ancient god of light. Yes, this is fiercely Roman Catholic Ireland and Lugh a pagan god, but that irony is at the core of the film: the hypocrisy of tradition. The dramatic change in the richly metaphoric movie comes with the arrival of two men: eldest sibling--and only Mundy brother--Jack (Michael Gambon), a priest returning from many years in Africa, now addled, and Christine's long-absent lover and Michael's father, the charmingly flighty Gerry (Rhys Ifans). Beautiful music and excellent performances highlight the film, which also features gorgeous cinematography of the Irish countryside. Meryl Streep is stern eldest sister Kate; Kathy Burke is lively Maggie; Brid Brennan (who appeared in the stage play) is thoughtful caretaker Agnes; and Sophie Thompson is simple sweet Rose. It's a quiet film, but one filled with ironic and haunting meaning. Directed by Pat O'Connor (Circle of Friends). --N.F. Mendoza, Amazon.com

Al Pacino plays a Maryland lawyer who takes on a judicial system rife with deal making in And Justice for All, an awkward blend of satire and sentimentality. Topical director Norman Jewison can't seem to help Pacino get comfortable with the mismatched material, which pushes the film into outrageousness at some turns and mawkishness at others. The script by Barry Levinson and Valerie Curtin is more an accumulation of random ideas and moments than a congruent story. However, it's interesting to see the large cast of good actors, most of whom were unknowns at the time including Christine Lahti who made her film debut here. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Legendary film director John Huston creates one of his most cerebral films that will stay with the viewer for a long time. Set in the American Deep South during the post-war era, Wise Blood stars Brad Dourif as Hazel Motes, an unhinged and aimless war-veteran, who decides to become a Bible-thumping preacher for a quasi-religious cult called The Church Without Christ'. Linking up with a fraudulent hustler from hellfire-and-brimstone preaching circuit - who pretends to be blind for the assembled believers - Motes is put under pressure by the fraudster to blind himself for real so that he can truly see the light'. A dark satire on religious movements that, beautifully acted by Dourif, Huston and William Hickey.
