  An international co-production of Jim Henson's Creature Shop, Australia's Channel 9 and Hallmark Entertainment, Farscape is genre television at its most ambitious, inspired both by the cult appeal of Babylon 5 and the continuing success of the Star Trek franchise. Making extensive use of CGI, prosthetics and state-of-the-art puppetry, Farscape takes a visual leap beyond previous shows. Admittedly, the basic premise may be borrowed from Buck Rogers (American astronaut catapulted to far-flung galaxy populated by strange aliens), while the crew have something of Blake's 7 about them (a motley bunch of escaped convicts pursued by a relentless foe), and ideas such as the living ship are borrowed from Babylon 5, but the Farscape concept has a freshness that makes it look and feel completely original. The production design is all bio-mechanical curves and the script never takes itself too seriously (fart jokes and double-entendres pop up when you least expect them). It must have been expensive to make, but it certainly looks (and sounds-in Dolby Digital 5.1) as if every penny made it to the screen. In true Buck Rogers style, Ben Browder plays leading man John Crichton as an all-American astronaut, although with a more believable sense of bewilderment; the supporting cast is a mixture of Australian and British actors, mostly disguised under heavy make-up.There are five more episodes from Season One on this third DVD box set. "They've Got a Secret" has D'Argo being accidentally ejected into space, as a result of which, secrets of his imprisonment are revealed. "Till the Blood Runs Clear" finds Crichton and Aeryn confronting bounty-hunters. In "The Flax", the crew get all tangled up with some Zenetan pirates. Blue-skinned Delvian priestess Zhaan meets more of her kind in "Rhapsody in Blue", but madness is the result. Finally, "Jeremiah Crichton" finds our human hero stranded on an earthly paradise where no machines will function; falling in love is just the beginning of his troubles.On the DVD: Special features here are a gallery of conceptual art and another star profile, this time of Anthony Simcoe's Luxan warrior character, D'Argo. --Mark Walker

  In October 1991 the fishing community of Gloucester Massachusetts experienced the full wrath of Mother Nature when a freak meteorological event produced the fiercest storm in modern history. Director Wolfgang Petersen has fashioned this heroic true story (as chronicled in Sebastian Junger's bestseller) into a star-laden blockbuster employing computer power to whip up the terrifying titular storm. George Clooney plays Billy Tyne captain of the Andrea Gail who has been plagued by bad luck at sea and is on a poor run of catches. Frustrated by the huge hauls of the Hannah Boden captained by Linda Greenlaw (Mary Ann Mastrantonio) Tyne decides to head back out to sea for the Flemish Cap a remote area renowned for its rich fishing prospects. He is joined by a number of his regular crew including Billy Shatford (Mark Wahlberg) Dale Murphy (John C Reilly) David Sullivan (William Fichtner) Alfred Pierre (Allen Payne) and Michael Moran (John Hawkes). Sure enough Tyne's luck changes for the better at the Flemish Cap and the Andrea Gail catches a full haul. Buoyed by the money that awaits them back home the crew sets off back to Gloucester but disturbing weather patterns hamper their progress and they soon find themselves battling against 100ft waves and 120mph winds that threaten to tear the boat apart. Includes the Novel and the HBO 20 minute documentary 'Creating the Storm' highlighting the groundbreaking special effects and story behind the movie.

  Pure. Popcorn. Entertainment. That's an exact classification of director Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The action is nonstop, with battles and explosions from start to finish. The camera (without any subtlety) exploits Megan Fox's hotness to the max. As if she weren't enough, a new sex kitten (Isabel Lucas) is thrown into the equation. Shia LaBeouf is as charismatic as ever, and fills the starring role with ease. And then there's the humour. Sam's parents (Kevin Dunn and Julie White) provided some semi-raunchy laugh-out-loud moments in the first movie, but now they take it to the next level. Sometimes it seems like they are trying a little too hard, but it is still hilarious. As far as the “plot” goes, the writers didn't waste much time--it's really just a context for the giant-robot death matches and dramatic slow-mo sequences. The movie kicks off two years later where the Autobots have formed an alliance with the U.S. government, creating an elite team led by Major Lennox (Josh Duhamel), in an effort to snuff out any remaining Decepticons that show up. The bad guys keep coming, and it turns out that a much more menacing force than Megatron is out there--and it is looking for something on Earth that is tied to the very origin of the Transformers race. Fans of the franchise will be delighted by the addition of many new robot characters (there are well over 40 in the sequel, versus only 13 in the first). The second Transformers has shaped up to be one of the worst reviewed and most successful movies of all time. This strange pairing is really just an indication that this movie has one purpose: to entertain. The creators didn't want to waste time bogging down the action and drama with substance--which was arguably a good decision. --Jordan Thompson

  Originally made for television, Blood Crime is a standard thriller with a better-than-usual plot. But when he finally contacts the local sheriff (James Caan) the beaten man turns up dead and turns out to be the sheriff's son. Now Pruitt has to find the real murderer before the evidence starts pointing to him. The script isn't subtle, and as a larger mystery unfolds, some elements of Blood Crime are a little too convenient--but the tension between Pruitt and the sheriff remains surprisingly taut, the story zips along, and--for the genre--the character motivations are unusually plausible. --Bret Fetzer
