  • The Jackal [1998]The Jackal | DVD | (03/09/2001) from £16.04   |  Saving you £3.95 (19.80%)   |  RRP £19.99

The Jackal is filmmaking by numbers: take two huge stars, Richard Gere and Bruce Willis, and pit them opposite each other in a plot that's already been audience tested. That director Michael Caton Jones' film is based not on Frederick Forsyth's novel but on the script for the 1973 original starring James Fox is the first clue that something here is amiss. Fred Zinneman's The Day of the Jackal was a genuinely taut and claustrophobic thriller; the remake is like a Rocky & Bullwinkle take on international terrorism disguised as an action movie. Dashing IRA terrorist, Declan Mulqueen (Richard Gere), is sprung from jail to help the FBI Deputy Director Carton Preston (Sidney Poitier) track down The Jackal, an amoral international terrorist who is a master of disguise. The FBI believes he is about to assassinate a US political bigwig and is engaged in a race against time to discover exactly who the target is and where they will be felled. Throughout the film Gere sports an Irish accent as ill-fitting and phoney as the bushy lip-wig that Willis adopts at one point as a disguise. The usually warm-hearted Willis plays the steel-jawed terrorist with a cool reserve, but he doesn't have much character development to work with (apart from a misguided attempt to introduce a gay subtext). At over two hours of running time with plenty of exposition and precious few action sequences, this film is a test of will for the audience as well as the protagonists. On the DVD: The DVD includes a lengthy "making of" featurette, several deleted scenes and an alternate ending with some small dialogue changes. There is also an exceedingly dry director's commentary by Michael Caton Jones which muses on such mind-numbingly dull details as the colour of the subway platform in the film's climactic sequence. The film is presented in a clear print in 2.35:1 anamorphic format with 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. --Chris Campion

Killer Crocodile First there was Jaws, then there was Piranha, next came Alligator. But nothing has prepared you for... Killer Crocodile! From the notorious Fabrizio De Angelis (Zombie Flesh Eaters) comes the ultimate in nature amok films. When a group of well-meaning scientists venture into the murky swamps of Santo Domingo, little do they know they are stumbling into a toxic nightmare. Local industrial barons have foolishly been pumping their waste into the water and this has given birth to a humongous reptilian monstrosity with an equally large appetite for human flesh. Featuring effects by the legendary Giannetto De Rossi (Rambo III), Killer Crocodile delivers all the thrills, spills and chills that any self-respecting fan of eco-horror demands. With performances from Anthony Crenna (son of Rambo's Richard Creena) and Hollywood legend, Van Johnson (Eagles Over London), Killer Crocodile remains a firm cult favorite find out why for yourself, with striking HD clarity, thanks to this 2k restoration from 88 Films. Killer Crocodile 2 Getting back in the water will never be safe again! From special effects guru, Giannetto De Rossi (Dune), comes this blood-soaked follow-up to Killer Crocodile. The swamps of Santo Domingo are still haunted by the waste of the industrial industry and Anthony Crenna (The Blob) is out to prove the dangers plaguing the local water sources with the help of reporter, and love-interest, Liza (Debra Karr). At the same time a greedy property developer pushes to secure a location for his pet project, a swank new holiday resort overlooking a toxic river, despite the areas problem with a mutated killer crocodile chowing down on anyone dumb enough to enter the water. Stepping behind the camera for his first and, to date, only time, BAFTA-nominee Giannetto De Rossi (The Last Emperor) amps up the gore, set-pieces, F-bombs and general nastiness; the scene in which a boatload of orphans and a nun get chewed on by the killer croc is enough to cement this film's place in the exploitation history books, but that's just the beginning and Killer Crocodile 2 is bigger, badder and louder than the first in every conceivable way. Brace yourself for Killer Crocodile 2 like you have never seen it before thanks to this beautiful 2k restoration from 88 Films. • Frasier Season 3Frasier Season 3 | DVD | (06/09/2004) from £5.99   |  Saving you £29.00 (484.14%)   |  RRP £34.99

With this third season, Frasier scored an impressive hat trick, winning its third successive Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. You don't need too much analysis to get to the bottom of this unprecedented success. The series was a primetime oasis of wit and sophistication, with welcome forays into farce that pricked Frasier's bubble of pomposity. His priceless reactions to the assaults on his dignity are worthy of Jack Benny. Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) can be infuriating, as in "The Focus Group," in which he is obsessed with knowing why a lone focus group participant (guest star Tony Shalhoub) doesn't like him. But he is also endearing in his delusional view of himself as, in the words of one mocking bystander, a "man of the people." Frasier meets his match in new station owner Kate Costas (Oscar-winner Mercedes Ruehl). Their combative relationship turns to lust over the course of the first 10 episodes. But the season's most pivotal story arc is the separation of Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and Maris. "Moon Dance," which marked Grammer's directorial debut, is a series benchmark, as a crestfallen Niles tangos with his unrequited love, Daphne (Jane Leeves), at a high society ball. Not that the Crane family still doesn't have issues to work out. Frasier cannot abide being beaten at chess by Martin (John Mahoney) in "Chess Pains." Frasier and Niles ill-advisedly go into joint practice in "Shrink Rap," and find themselves on the opposite sides of a sanity hearing in "Crane vs. Crane." Lilith is sorely missed, but in this season's blast-from-the-past episode, Shelley Long returns in "The Show Where Diane Comes Back." It is a joy to see Cheers resurrected, if only in Diane's self-absorbed new play, which Frasier agrees to back. And any episode with Frasier's amoral agent Bebe (Harriet Sansom Harris) is must-see television. Frasier's humor was character-based, rather than topical, giving it a longer shelf life. For those who lament the end of one of television's gold standard series, this box set will be excellent therapy. --Donald Liebenson

  • Noddy In Toyland - Noddy And Friends [1999]Noddy In Toyland - Noddy And Friends | DVD | (29/10/1999) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Traditionalists were of course scandalised enough when the stop-motion animated Noddy TV series featured regional accents and (gasp) positive black characters. God only knows what they'll make of this. Try to keep up: what you have here is an Anglo-American co-production in which stories from the stop-motion series are sandwiched between frantic scenarios featuring live-action children and adult characters and puppets--a kind of Sesame Street in total overdrive. This, of course, seems hopelessly incongruous to everyone except the show's intended audience, which simply takes the whole thing in its stride. Individually, the two elements are commendable anyway; the first live-action episode--involving a parrot and an unstoppable vacuum cleaner--is a particularly fine piece of slapstick, while the original stop-motion stories are as gently rewarding as ever. This DVD is guaranteed to meet with approval from the jingly-hatted one's many young fans. --Roger Thomas
