The second season of Farscape expands upon and develops the characters introduced in the ambitious first season. John Crichton's new nemesis is the deadly Scorpius, replacing Crais who has taken the living ship Moya's offspring on a voyage into the unknown. Moya's regular crew--Aeryn, Zhaan, Chiana, D'Argo and Rygel--remain as divided and suspicious of each other as ever, yet somehow manage to pull together at times of crisis. After revelations about Pilot's introduction to Moya in "The Way We Weren't", the writers continue to exploit the show's gift for surprising as well as emotionally convincing character development. The CGI effects, prosthetics and state-of-the-art puppetry, courtesy of Jim Henson's Creature Shop, continue to make Farscape the most original looking sci-fi show on TV. The witty scripts, peppered with post-modern pop culture references and movie in-jokes, are also a breath of fresh air. The result is episodic TV sci-fi that continually pushes at the accepted boundaries of the genre. --Mark Walker

  • Downtime [1998]Downtime | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Down Time is a strange attempt to mix concrete Northern social realism and Bruce-Willis-style cliffhanger thrills, with balls of fire billowing up empty lift shafts and so forth. Paul McGann plays an ex-police psychologist, retired through ill health, drafted in to dissuade miserable single mother Chrissy (Susan Lynch) from throwing herself and her child off the top of a tower block. He succeeds, though in so doing betrays some of the problems that caused him to quit his job. He then pursues Chrissy romantically, during the course of which he, she and her little boy become stuck in the tower block lift, which then starts ascending and descending at random when hoodlum squatters break into the control box and mess about with it for an idle laugh. With its bizarre and somewhat improbable scenario, its odd mix of whimsical light romance, grim-up-North-style melodrama and explosive stunt action, Down Time as a whole doesn't really come off. The behaviour of key characters borders on the arbitrary, the "yobs" who cause all the problems go curiously unpunished and the ending barely makes sense. However, the lengthy mid-sequence in which McGann rescues (and is rescued by) Chrissy from the perilously dangling lift is, though predictable in its outcome, gripping enough. --David Stubbs

A Cock And Bull Story (2005): Director Michael Winterbottom is out to film the unfilmable novel: an adaptation of Laurence Sterne's sprawling 18th Century masterpiece of digression The Life And Opinions Of Tristram Shandy Gentleman. What begins as a seemingly straightforward attempt to recreate the frenetic novel - starring Steve Coogan as the title figure and Rob Brydon as his Uncle Toby - quickly derails into a behind-the-scenes document of the film's actual production. Working triple time (for he also plays Tristram's father) Coogan is hilarious as the insecure ""Steve Coogan"" a shallow actor who is more interested in his cute assistant (Naomie Harris) than the mother of his newborn child (the always delightful Kelly Macdonald). Meanwhile ""Rob Brydon"" is trying desperately to convince ""Steve Coogan"" that his role is a co-lead not merely a supporting one. As the production threatens to spin out of control the filmmakers hire Gillian Anderson (playing herself of course) to fill a much-needed role.... It's All Gone Pete Tong (2004): Frankie Wilde (Paul Kaye) is the hearing-impaired DJ who delights the clubbers on the island of Ibiza by coupling his larger-than-life drug and alcohol-fuelled persona with undeniable skills behind the turntables. But as Frankie's hearing rapidly disintegrates and his former manager wife friends and record label slowly fade away the distraught DJ plunges into the depths of despair... Grand Theft Parsons (2004): There are times when it's right and proper to simply bury the dead. This is not one of those times. Gram Parsons was one of the most influential musicians of his time; a genius who knew Elvis and the Stones and led the Byrds. As fame and fortune came within his grasp he died unexpectedly in 1973. When Gram's best friend and road manager Phil Kaufman (Johnny Knoxville) hears the news he gets busy to fulfil an old promise - to cremate his buddy in the majestic desert wilderness of Joshua Tree. The plan looks great but there are snags - he has to steal the body from under the noses of the authorities then evade the police Gram's father and an avenging ex-girlfriend with only a stoned hippy for company and driving a psychedelic hearse!
