Adapting such a popular book for the screen could so easily have detracted from the essence of the original story, with its battle of good versus evil interspersed with warmth and humour, and its ability to truly capture a child's imagination. But this team have pulled it off with aplomb: the animation is spot on, the atmosphere is highly charged, the characters are true to Jacques' originals and, although those who know the book well will spot that some detail is missing, the important, magical, elements of the story are all there. This is exciting stuff, filled with heroism and humour, and packaged into 85 minutes of pure, unadulterated pleasure for lovers of fantasy and adventure. Age range: 7 and over. --Susan Harrison.

  An ailing department store where the management are beginning to show signs of wear and tear and the staff are clashing! Mr. Humphries is accused of stealing and his distinguished career could end in disgrace. When found guilty in a shop floor trial he' then dismissed but Mr Harman later finds the missing money at the back of the till! A handsome golf professional comes to the floor for a demonstration and accidentally hits Mrs. Slocombe on the head with a ball. Totally convinced she is a little girl Mrs. Slocombe wrecks havoc on the store as she cavorts around the department. Mrs Slocombe's cat is missing and in comforting her Mr. Humphries finds himself entangled more deeply than he would have liked. When Mrs Slocombe invents an aphrodisiac perfume Mrs. Peacock finds her husband's trousers in the wrong hands and there's a big misunderstanding. Plus all hell breaks loose when the staff's CB radio advert for Grace Brothers attracts a rush of truck drivers to the store. Finally what does the future hold for this shopping institution? It looks like bad news for Grace Brothers when there is interest in buying the store by the Japanese; so the staff take their problems to Number Ten where they contact President Reagan by phone and Mrs. Thatcher gets fashion tips from Mr. Humphries!

The legendary Max von Sydow appears to be having a blast as the evil Ming the Merciless, while Ornella Muti, as his daughter, is the living embodiment of what attracts adolescent boys to comics in the first place. (She makes Barbarella look mundane.) One of the most shamelessly entertaining movies ever made, this is a knowingly absurd sensory freak-out that'll have the viewer blissfully checking the sky afterward for signs of Hawkmen. --Andrew Wright

  What it lacks in grandeur, this 1978 TV version of The Four Feathers makes up for in fidelity to AEW Mason's classic novel. By cannibalising the superior 1939 production for epic shots and sequences, this modest adaptation draws attention to its meagre production values, relying heavily on casting and chemistry to compensate. That it succeeds, more or less, in capturing the essence of Mason's grand adventure is largely due to the appeal of Beau Bridges and Jane Seymour in the prime of their early careers. (Bridges' film career was gaining momentum; Seymour would rise from here to the similarly romantic Somewhere in Time.) Bridges is the shamed soldier Harry Faversham, transcending cowardice by rescuing his closest friends during Britain's bloody campaign in 1870s Sudan; Seymour is his beloved back home, torn between Harry and the seemingly braver Jack (Robert Powell).
